Space ShuttleNASA launches Space Shuttle Columbia on the 90th shuttle mission, in which 16 days are spent in orbit conducting studies of the human nervous system in a weightless environment. This is the final flight of the 20-year-old Spacelab module aboard a space shuttle, though some elements of Spacelab are later incorporated into the International Space Station. Columbia’s 25th crew is Commander Richard Searfoss, Pilot Scott Altman, and mission specialists Richard Linnehan, Dafydd Rhys Williams and Kathryn Hire, and payload specialists Dr. Jay Buckey and Dr. James Pawelczyk. From The Earth To The MoonPay cable channel HBO’s heavily-promoted docudrama miniseries From The Earth To The Moon, continues, executive produced by actor Tom Hanks (Apollo 13) through Ron Howard’s Imagine Films. The series chronicles NASA’s quest to reach the moon, and two episodes debut each Sunday of the show’s run. The third night premieres the episodes Spider (chronicling the evolution of the lunar module and the flights of Apollo 9 and 10) and Mare Tranquilitatis (Apollo 11 and the first lunar landing). Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) stars as Buzz Aldrin, with Tony Goldwyn (Ghost, Scandal) as Neil Armstrong and Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride) as Mike Collins.

Earth: Final ConflictThe national syndication window opens for the 22nd episode of the posthumous Gene Roddenberry science fiction series Earth: Final Conflict, bringing the series’ first season to a close. (Though the 21st to air, the show’s distributor, Tribune Entertainment, is holding the 20th episode back to air during the July ratings sweeps.) The marks the final regular appearance of series star Kevin Kilner, who would be replaced in the upcoming second season; he would later make a few guest appearances in the fifth season.
