David McCallum (The Man From UNCLE, The Invisible Man, Sapphire & Steel) guest stars in what was intended to be a season finale cliffhanging into a second season, with the return of Michael Knight from the original Knight Rider as a major plot point. That character’s face is not seen, as David Hasselhoff – still starring in Baywatch – has not been approached to reprise the role.

STS-91: last stop at Mir

Space ShuttleSpace Shuttle Discovery becomes the last American shuttle to visit space station Mir during a ten-day mission launched on this date. The historic mission is marred slightly by a communications malfunction which makes live TV transmissions from orbit impossible. In addition to retrieving American science experiment packages from Mir, a cargo-bay-mounted experiment to detect dark matter is also conducted. Supplies are also off-loaded onto Mir. Aboard Discovery for her 24th flight are Commander Charles Precourt, Pilot Dominic Gorie, and mission specialists Wendy Lawrence, Franklin Chang-Diaz, Janet Kavandi and Valery Ryumin. Mir astronaut Andrew Thomas, the last American to visit the Russian station, returns to Earth aboard Discovery.

Sliders comes to the Sci-Fi Channel

SlidersSci-Fi Channel airs the 48th and 49th episodes of Tracy Torme’s alternate-universe science fiction series Sliders, starring Jerry O’Connell, Cleavant Derricks, and Kari Wuhrer. Genesis is the fourth season premiere, and the first episode produced for the Sci-Fi Channel; Prophets And Loss guest stars David Birney (St. Elsewhere) and Connor Trinneer (Star Trek: Enterprise). David Peckinpah has now assumed sole duties as showrunner, following Tracy Torme’s exit after criticism of Fox’s handling of the series during season three.
