ClementineThough its extended mission was cut short by a mishap in 1994, NASA’s ill-fated Clementine lunar orbiter returned data with significant implications for further manned visits to the moon. NASA announces that craters near the north and south poles of Earth’s moon may harbor enough water ice to allow long-term colonization, and could also be used to create propellant on-site. While this promising announcement occurs as the 30th anniversary of the first manned moon landing approaches, any further manned visits exist strictly on paper.

From The Earth To The MoonPay cable channel HBO premieres its heavily-promoted docudrama miniseries From The Earth To The Moon, executive produced by actor Tom Hanks (Apollo 13) through Ron Howard’s Imagine Films. The series chronicles NASA’s quest to reach the moon, and two episodes debut each Sunday of the show’s run. The first night covers Sputnik through the Gemini program in the episode Can We Do This?, and then devotes a full hour to the Apollo One fire and its aftermath. Nick Searcy stars as Deke Slayton, with Mark Rolston as Gus Grissom, musician/actor Chris Isaak as Ed White, and David Andrews as Frank Borman. Kevin Spacey, Mason Adams and John Slattery (Mad Men) guest star.

The series chronicles NASA’s quest to reach the moon, and two episodes debut each Sunday of the show’s run. The second night premieres the episodes We Have Cleared The Tower (chronicling the preparations for the launch of Apollo 7) and 1968 (chronicling the flight of Apollo 8). Mark Harmon (NCIS) stars as Wally Schirra, with David Andrews (A Nightmare On Elm Street, Terminator 3) as Frank Borman and Tim Daly (Wings) as Jim Lovell. Peter Horton (thirtysomething) and Ann Magnuson guest star.
