NBC airs the 23rd episode of the military drama The Lieutenant, created and produced by future Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and starring Gary Lockwood (2001: a space odyssey) and Robert Vaughn (The Man From UNCLE). Ricardo Montalban (Fantasy Island) guest stars. 
Lt. Rice is assigned to fill in for the night duty officer in charge of shore patrol, on the strength of having taken a single orientation course. One of his first duties is to make a decision on the fate of a Marine named Redding, who has gotten into a brawl not long after returning to the States from Korea; Rice decides to cut him loose. As Rice’s shifts fill up with drunken sailors and a few AWOL cases, Redding is going berserk over the loss of his wife, becoming dangerously unstable. Letting Redding go may turn out to be Rice’s first and last mistake on shore patrol.

Notes: While it sometimes seems as though Gene Roddenberry cast Star Trek almost entirely from the ranks of The Lieutenant’s guest stars, Roddenberry had crossed paths with Ricardo Montalban before; Montalban was cast in Roddenberry’s very first sci-fi teleplay, The Secret Defense Of 117, which aired as part of the TV anthology series Stage 7 in 1954 – ten years before this episode. Montalban would appear on Star Trek as Khan (Space Seed), a character revived for the big screen in 1982’s Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan.
