NBC airs the 29th and final episode of the military drama The Lieutenant, created and produced by future Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and starring Gary Lockwood (2001: a space odyssey) and Robert Vaughn (The Man From UNCLE). Greg Morris (Mission: Impossible) and James Shigeta guest star in a powerful script written by Roddenberry.
With no notice to prepare, Lt. Rice is put on a plane to southeast Asia, with classified plans in hand to modify backpack radios into radio jammers to deliver and test on the front lines. He befriends Captain Myang Dee, educated in America but returned to Asia to fight for his people’s freedom, but pleasantries are cut short when the helicopter carrying Rice to the front takes fire, forcing it down. Overnight, foot patrols find the helicopter, and Rice watches as the crew falls, one by one. Using fuel drained from the chopper, Rice burns the classified documents and runs, but not without being hit by a stray bullet. He makes his way to a village and is taken in and put in hiding, and finds that Myang Dee also survived. As they leave the village to head back to where the helicopter landed, Dee seems very interested in what Rice knew about the jamming system, and Rice realizes that his new friend has been leading him in circles.
