Special BulletinNBC premieres the two-hour TV movie Special Bulletin, presented in the style of a live breaking news report, and conceived, written, and directed by Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz (later creators of the late ’80s series Thirtysomething). As is often the case with fictional presentations produced in the style of a news broadcast, some audience members are genuinely alarmed by the movie, despite frequent on-screen disclaimers advising those watching that it is just a movie. V: The Final Battle Part Two

VNBC premieres the second part of its continuation of Kenneth Johnson’s alien invasion epic, V: The Final Battle. The birth of Robin’s alien-hybrid children is one of the genre cliffhangers of the decade. This marks the science fiction soundtrack debut of Dennis McCarthy, who later goes on to score most of the Star Trek spinoffs of the next three decades; he is tapped at a very late stage (mere days prior to broadcast) to rescore the entire miniseries – so late, in fact, that it’s ultimately impossible for him to redo the music for the first night in the time allotted. V: The Final Battle Part Three

VNBC premieres the third and final part of its continuation of Kenneth Johnson’s alien invasion epic, V: The Final Battle. Now bearing little resemblance to the story Johnson originally hoped to tell with the sequel, the three-night event scores enough in the all-important Nielsen TV ratings to convince NBC to order a weekly series to be produced in time for 1984’s fall TV season. VNBC airs the 18th episode of Kenneth Johnson’s sci-fi series V, starring Marc Singer, Faye Grant, and Diane Badler. Judson Scott (The Phoenix, Star Trek II) guest stars in an episode that, intended to be the season finale cliffhanger, instead turned out to be the series finale. Amazing Stories: Ghost Train

Amazing StoriesThe first episode of Steven Spielberg’s anthology series Amazing Stories airs on NBC. The name of the show is licensed from the publisher of Hugo Gernsback’s science fiction literary magazine, which has been in publication since the 1920s. Many of the episodes come from story sketches by Spielberg, assigned to other writers; this is one of only two to be directed by Spielberg as well. Lukas Haas and Roberts Blossom guest star. Amazing Stories: The Mission

Amazing StoriesThe fifth episode of Steven Spielberg’s anthology series Amazing Stories airs on NBC; this is the second and final episode directed by Spielberg himself. Kevin Costner (Field Of Dreams), Kiefer Sutherland (24), Anthony LaPaglia (Without A Trace) and Casey Siemaszko (Back To The Future) star in an episode scored by John Williams (Star Wars, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Superman). Spielberg is nominated for an Emmy for best direction, but does not win; the episode’s cinematographer (John McPherson) does win an Emmy. Most Amazing Stories episodes are a half-hour long, but this one runs a full hour. Read more
