The LieutenantA tragic accident at a Marine training camp leaves one man blind and other dead. One of the deceased is a native of Rice’s home town of Clary, Indiana, and he is assigned to accompany the dead Marine’s casket home and assist the family with the funeral arrangements. The man’s father, Joe Hammond, is overwhelmed with grief – and anger. Hammond wants to know who to blame, and as the duly appointed representative of the United States Marine Corps, Lt. Rice becomes his easiest target. Rice has a few hometown ghosts of his own to deal with as well, including his father, the pacifist editor of the local newspaper, who would rather his son came home to take his place at the paper rather than remaining in the Marine Corps.

Notes: Guest star John Anderson never appeared in the original Star Trek, but did make a formidable appearance as Kevin Uxbridge, a seemingly human colonist who survived the wrath of an alien race against all odds and then returned that rage with interest, in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode The Survivors (1989), one of his final screen appearances. Sherry Jackson appeared in the early Trek episode What Are Little Girls Made Of? as the android Andrea. Vic Tayback would have a much more prominent role when his Trek guest shot came around in A Piece Of The Action (1968). Like The Lieutenant creator Gene Roddenberry, writer Robert Dozier (1930-2012) had also written for Have Gun – Will Travel, and Dozier also wrote for the 1950s CBS anthology series Stage 7, a series for which Roddenberry likewise wrote his first science fiction script. Dozier’s father, William Dozier, was the showrunner of the phenomenally successful 1960s Batman series, for which Robert wrote a single two-part story. Robert Dozier was also married to Trek guest star and Next Generation semi-regular Diana Muldaur.
