Star Trek: Starfleet AcademyStardate not given: The Athena brings both the Academy and War College cadets to the site of the derelict U.S.S. Miyazaki, a Starfleet ship whose crew perished trying to test an experimental drive system a century ago. Adrift within a debris field where the accident happened, the Miyazaki is now used as a training ground in a timed exercise to see if the cadets can reactivate the ship’s systems within a certain amount of time. The cadets are split into two teams – one dispatched to the Miyazaki, the other monitoring their colleagues from the bridge of the Athena – combining students from both schools. But someone else has gotten to the derelict first: the cadets aboard the Miyazaki are ambushed by cannibalistic humanoid creatures known as the Furies. Admiral Vance prepares to mobilize Starfleet, but reluctantly suggests a faster alternative: contacting Nus Braka, whose Venari Ral pirates have fended off the Furies in the past, to negotiate for help to save the cadets. Caleb’s burgeoning relationship with Tamira Sadal has gone as far as a touching of minds, which may become vital in communicating with the trapped cadets. Nus Braka arrives, not to negotiate in good faith, but to stall and to make Vance and Ake grovel. The unique skills of the cadets aboard the Miyazaki – from technological prowess to medical skills to self-sacrifice – are tested to their limits in ways their instructors never intended.
