Episode IReceiving more fanfare than any movie preview in the history of cinema, the first teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace premieres nationwide, appearing before the Pixar computer-animated family film A Bug’s Life. So eager are Star Wars fans to catch their first glimpse of the new prequel that many reportedly pay full ticket price to simply watch the preview and leave before the movie with which it’s packaged. Lucasfilm’s official Star Wars web site posts the trailer on the web – though the size of the file and the still-mostly-dial-up shape of the internet at the time makes watching it online a challenge.

Babylon 5: Sleeping In Light

Babylon 5Cable channel TNT premieres the 110th and final episode of J. Michael Straczynski’s science fiction series Babylon 5. Claudia Christian returns as Ivanova in an episode filmed before the actress allowed her contract to lapse in 1997 (at a time when it appeared that Babylon 5 would end with its fourth season). Though further TV movies and direct-to-video movies are produced, as well as the spinoff series Crusade, this is the end of the main Babylon 5 storyline, and also marks the directorial debut of series creator J. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy (cancelled game soundtrack)

Star Trek: Starfleet AcademySonic Images announces the cancellation of its upcoming release of Ron Jones‘ soundtrack from the PC game Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Despite this announcement, copies of the CD have already been sent to both mainstream and fandom reviewers as advance copies for review. Star TrekParamount debuts Star Trek: Insurrection in theaters, featuring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation directed by their own co-star, Jonathan Frakes. Written by former TNG executive producer Michael Piller, the writer responsible for the fan-favorite TV two-parter The Best Of Both Worlds, this movie’s development is somewhat troubled, and its increased reliance on humor earns mixed reviews. The movie features a mixture of familiar Babylon 5 characters as well as new characters who would later appear in the spinoff series Crusade; A Call To Arms is effectively a two-hour pilot for Crusade, which would premiere later in 1999. Star Trek: The Motion Picture (20th Anniversary soundtrack)

Star Trek: The Motion PictureSony Records releases a 2-CD set featuring Jerry Goldsmith’s soundtrack from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, now with a few additional tracks. The second disc is not part of the soundtrack, but instead provides the first-ever CD pressing of the 1976 spoken-word album Inside Star Trek, featuring recorded live appearances by Gene Roddenberry, William Shatner, Isaac Asimov and others. This set is billed as the “20th anniversary edition” of the soundtrack. Read more

Missing Doctor Who episode recovered

Doctor WhoPart one of the classic William Hartnell-era Doctor Who four-parter The Crusade is recovered by the BBC, thanks to a fan who obtained it cheaply from a film collectors’ sale. The film is handed over to BBC’s unofficial Doctor Who Restoration Team. There’s initially no word on any possible video release of this segment of The Crusade, since parts two and four are still missing.
