After weeks of rampant rumors, Paramount’s television division finally confirms that the upcoming seventh season of Star Trek: The Next Generation will mark the end of the series on television, with the TNG crew’s big-screen debut to begin filming almost immediately after production wraps on the TV series. Paramount declines comment on the possibility that yet another Star Trek series will replace TNG in syndication.
With planning for a Paramount television network underway, the studio initiates the development of another Star Trek spinoff, which has no name or concept as yet. Rick Berman and Michael Piller, the creators of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, along with TNG head writer Jeri Taylor, will create the new series – the first Star Trek series to air on network TV since the animated series of the early 1970s. Since it won’t air until after TNG’s finale, the new show is certain to be a ship-based show set on a new Starfleet ship, and the trio of creators decide early on to propel that ship into unknown territory, where its crew will face completely new threats – and the writers won’t have to worry about existing Star Trek continuity.
BBC Radio 5 broadcasts the first episode of the five-part Doctor Who audio drama The Paradise Of Death, reuniting the early ’70s cast of Jon Pertwee, Elisabeth Sladen, and Nicholas Courtney as the Brigadier. Peter Miles, Maurice Denham, and Harold Innocent guest star in a story written by early ’70s Doctor Who showrunner Barry Letts. The heavily-promoted radio story marks 30 years of Doctor Who.

A decade after the premiere of the most recent Star Wars theatrical film (and a couple of years into a burgeoning new wave of Star Wars marketing whose most visible components are new original novels, a new action figure line, and popular role playing and computer games), George Lucas quietly announces in Daily Variety that he plans to produce – but not direct – a trilogy of prequel movies set prior to Star Wars. Though the announcement excites the Star Wars fan base, it’s one of many such announcements in the pages of Variety, many of which concern projects that never make it to the screen.
