Reeltime Pictures releases the first professionally-produced Doctor Who fan production direct to VHS, War Time, starring John Levene as Sgt. Benton of UNIT and Michael Wisher. By not directly referencing the Doctor, the production is able to separately license the character of Benton and thus legally sell the video. 
The Doctor Who-related fan production Shakedown: Return of the Sontarans is released on VHS, starring Doctor Who alumni Carole Ann Ford and Sophie Aldred, and ex-Blake’s 7 cast members Jan Chappell and Brian Croucher, all as new characters in a story centered around the Sontarans (used by permission).
The Doctor Who-related fan production Downtime is released on VHS, starring Elisabeth Sladen, Nicholas Courtney, and Deborah Watling reprising their Doctor Who roles. Doctor Who TV alumni Geoffrey Beevers and John Leeson appear as new characters original to this production; another character new to this production is the Brigadier’s daughter, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart. This story follows up on Doctor Who’s Yeti stories of the 1960s.
The fan-produced Doctor Who video production Auton is released by BBV. Though not a BBC-sanctioned production, thanks to the specifics of UK copyright law, the producers are able to license the Autons from the estate of their creator, Robert Holmes, to commercially release the video on tape and DVD.

A tantalizing trailer for the unfinished Doctor Who fan film Devious, which included Jon Pertwee’s final performance in character and in costume as the Doctor, is released as a bonus feature on the Doctor Who DVD The War Games.
