Doctor Who and the Pescatons

Doctor Who and the Pescatons (Silva) Argo Records releases the standalone Doctor Who audio drama LP Doctor Who and the Pescatons in the UK, starring Tom Baker, Elisabeth Sladen, and guest starring Bill Mitchell in a story written by veteran TV writer Victor Pemberton. The first release of its kind licensed by the BBC (although plans had been made, and abandoned, for a radio series starring actor Peter Cushing in the 1960s), this release is the first in a very long history of Doctor Who stories told entirely in the audio medium, and will be re-released in other forms in later years.

Doctor Who: Exploration Earth / Genesis of the Daleks The third series of BBC Schools’ radio series Exploration Earth is broadcast, which is effectively an educational one-off Doctor Who audio adventure starring Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen. The BBC (and other publishers who licensed the title) will reissue this curiosity repeatedly in later years, frequently pairing it with the contemporary audio version of the TV serial Genesis Of The Daleks.

Doctor Who: Slipback BBC Radio 4 begins airing the six-part Doctor Who radio drama Slipback, starring Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant, and Valentine Dyall, as part of the “Pirate Radio 4” programming block. The story is written by Doctor Who’s current television script editor (and occasional novelist) Eric Saward. This is the final recorded radio drama performance for Valentine Dyall, who died weeks before broadcast.

Doctor Who: The Paradise Of Death BBC Radio 5 broadcasts the first episode of the five-part Doctor Who audio drama The Paradise Of Death, reuniting the early ’70s cast of Jon Pertwee, Elisabeth Sladen, and Nicholas Courtney as the Brigadier. Peter Miles, Maurice Denham, and Harold Innocent guest star in a story written by early ’70s Doctor Who showrunner Barry Letts. The heavily-promoted radio story marks 30 years of Doctor Who.

Doctor Who: The Ghosts Of N-Space

Doctor Who: Slipback BBC Radio 4 begins airing the five-part Doctor Who radio drama The Ghosts Of N-Space, starring Jon Pertwee, Elisabeth Sladen, and Nicholas Courtney as the Brigadier. Stephen Thorne and Sandra Dickinson (The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy) guest star. The story is written by early ’70s Doctor Who showrunner Barry Letts. This is Jon Pertwee’s final performance broadcast before his death later in 1996.

Doctor Who: The Sirens Of Time

Big Finish Productions releases the first Doctor Who audio drama in its main monthly range (though the range is not yet monthly, a frequency that will be determined by sheer audience demand). Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy reprise their respective versions of the Doctor in a story written, directed and scored by Nicholas Briggs.

Big Finish Productions releases the second Doctor Who audio drama in its main monthly range (though the range is not yet monthly, a frequency that will be determined by sheer audience demand). Peter Davison and Mark Strickson star in a story written by Mark Gatiss, who also guest stars.

Both audio stories are later made available on the Big Finish website.
