Space ShuttleSpace Shuttle Columbia lifts off on the 80th shuttle flight, a science mission lasting nearly 18 days. Two free-floating experiment platforms are deployed and then retrieved by the end of the mission for delivery back to Earth. Two spacewalks to test space station construction techniques are called off for safety reasons when a problem arises with Columbia’s airlock. Aboard Columbia for her 21st flight are Commander Kenneth Cockrell, Pilot Kent Rominger, and mission specialists Tammy Jernigan, Thomas Jones and Story Musgrave.

Star Trek: First Contact

Star TrekParamount debuts Star Trek: First Contact in theaters, featuring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation directed by their own co-star, Jonathan Frakes. The movie focuses on the Borg, arguably the strongest enemy to arise from TNG, and features actors and elements of both Deep Space Nine and Voyager. This proves to be the biggest hit of the TNG crew’s tenure at the movies. Read more

Pathfinder en route to Mars

PathfinderNASA/JPL’s low-cost Mars Pathfinder mission lifts off for a date with Mars. The first American Mars lander since the Viking missions of the 1970s, Pathfinder is practically an interplanetary tech demonstration, showing off new landing techniques (aerobraking and landing airbags), new lander designs (a fixed station delivering a wheeled “rover”), and the beginning of a new commitment to exploring Mars. By the time operations are wrapped up on the Pathfinder mission, the total amount of money spent is under $300,000,000.
