TekWarThe 14th episode of the sci-fi crime series TekWar, based on William Shatner’s novel series, airs as part of the Universal Action Pack syndication package. Greg Evigan, William Shatner, and Maria del Mar (Mercy Point) star. With ratings low compared to the other Universal Action Pack offerings, the series is cancelled, with the remaining episodes scheduled to be “burned off” early the following year.

Space ShuttleSpace Shuttle Discovery lifts off on the 70th shuttle flight, a nine-day mission to deploy a TDRS (Tracking & Data Relay Satellite) for NASA. The flight has seen many delays, including repairs made necessary by woodpeckers poking holes in the shuttle’s external fuel tank! The crew – consisting of Commander Terence Henricks, Pilot Kevin Kregel, and mission specialists Nancy Jane Currie, Donald Thomas and Mary Ellen Weber – conducts material and medical experiments after the deployment of the final satellite in the TDRS constellation.

DowntimeThe Doctor Who-related fan production Downtime is released on VHS, starring Elisabeth Sladen, Nicholas Courtney, and Deborah Watling reprising their Doctor Who roles. Doctor Who TV alumni Geoffrey Beevers and John Leeson appear as new characters original to this production; another character new to this production is the Brigadier’s daughter, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart. Soyuz TM-22

Soyuz TM-22Russia launches the Soyuz TM-22 mission to space station Mir, carrying cosmonauts Yuri Gidzenko and Sergei Avdeyev from Russia, and Thomas Reiter from Germany. The three space travelers settle in for a 179-day stay aboard Mir, from which they will return early in 1996.

Xena: Warrior Princess: Sins Of The Past

XenaThe week-long national syndication window opens for the first episode of Xena: Warrior Princess, starring Lucy Lawless and Renee O’Connor. A spinoff from the popular fantasy series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena has already been built up by a three-episode arc during Hercules’ first season, and will end up outlasting its parent series (and making an international star out of New Zealand actress Lucy Lawless in the process).
