The LieutenantLt. Rice is filling in as the platoon CO in the absence of Captain Rambridge when he gets an unusual request: Lt. Kingsley, football hero and nephew of Camp Pendleton’s Chief of Staff, is to take command of “B” Company, which is usually Rice’s command. Rice is expected to judge Kingsley’s command fitness with total impartiality, and Lt. Col. Farrell is constantly reminding Rice to be fair to Kingsley. Though competitive with Rice both on duty and off, Kingsley seems to be competent enough, even managing to get better sharpshooter qualifications out of “B” Company than Rice ever could. When Farrell mentions the possibility of Kingsley taking over Rice’s job, Rice feels he’s in an impossible position: he has to write up a completely fair and impartial command fitness assessment of a man to whom he could lose his own command.
