The LieutenantCaptain Rambridge and two of his platoons are assigned to amphibious operations, though Lt. Rice notices a problem immediately upon shipping out: Rambridge is sweating profusely, and has a hard time making it up the gangway of the ship. After a command briefing, Rambridge passes out and is taken to the ship’s sick bay, where he’s diagnosed with appendicitis, and surgery is scheduled to take place aboard ship. Rambridge hands command of Bravo Company’s entire operation over to Rice, who is uncertain about his ability to pull it off; matters aren’t helped much by the arrival of a pilot who was Rice’s academy upperclassman, eager to take Rice down a notch (even though Rice now outranks him). All of this makes for an awkward transition to Rice’s first company command, and a miscommunication once the exercises have begun puts Rice’s company down in the wrong place, easily picked off by opposing forces until Rice orders a withdrawal.
