The LieutenantRice’s intense two-week relationship with a young woman connected to a wealthy family has his friends speculating how long it’ll be before he retires from the Marine Corps to take up civilian life; even Rice finds himself pondering the possibilities. Rice also finds himself having to juggle several personnel issues, including a Marine whose wife is in danger of miscarrying, ahead of a scheduled exercise. But when that exercise is cancelled and Rice’s platoon is called up for real combat at a yet-to-be-identified destination, these personnel matters become life-or-death decisions, and so does Rice’s own future.
