Years in the making, the live-action adaptation of the classic anime series Space Battleship Yamato premieres in Japan, starring Takuya Kimura, Meisa Kuroki and Tsutomu Yamazaki. The movie takes some liberties with the basics of the Yamato storyline laid out in the early 1970s, but is surprisingly true to the look established in the animated series. 
The University of Nebraska Press publishes Wheels Stop: The Tragedies and Triumphs of the Space Shuttle Program, 1986–2011, a comprehensive history of the American Space Shuttle program written by Rick Houston. The book is part of University of Nebraska Press’ Outward Odyssey: A People’s History of Spaceflight series.
The 31st episode of The Flash, a modern-day reboot of DC Comics’ superhero starring Grant Gustin, airs on the CW. Neal McDonough (Boomtown), Stephen Amell (Arrow), and John Barrowman (Torchwood, Doctor Who) guest star in part of a crossover event designed to launch another DC Comics TV adaptation, Legends Of Tomorrow.

The 57-year-old Arecibo Radio Telescope is destroyed when its 900-ton equipment platform, suspended over the massive dish built into a geographic feature near Arecibo, Puerto Rico, falls into the dish, causing catastrophic damage to both. The platform had been suspended by miles of steel cables from three towers over the dish, through a recent assessment of the ability of both cables and towers to bear the platform’s load had raised doubts that the facility could remain operational. As the decision had already been made to decommission and dismantle the Arecibo telescope, the facility had already been evacuated prior to the collapse. The towers holding the platform over the dish also suffer severe damage, rendering them structurally unsafe as well. Locals compared the sound of the event to that of an avalanche or an earthquake. 
Streaming service Disney Plus releases the third episode of Hawkeye, created for TV by Jonathan Igla and starring Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld.

Deutsche Grammophon releases the album Echoes: Ancient & Modern by famed producer Trevor Horn (Buggles, Art Of Noise, Yes), an all-star album of covers of mostly ’80s hits, with a few past connections to Horn’s career.
RealWorld Records releases i/o, the tenth solo album by Peter Gabriel, a double album with different mixes – the “bright-side” and “dark-side” mixes – of each song, many of which have already debuted on YouTube throughout the year.
