Hayabusa pulls up

The first attempt to maneuver the unmanned space probe Hayabusa close enough to scoop up a sample of material from the surface of asteroid 25143 Itokawa is aborted by ground controllers at the Japanese space agency, JAXA. The spacecraft’s navigational system finds it difficult to maintain a precise lock on the elongated asteroid, so its automatic safety systems abort the approach to preserve Hayabusa intact. Another attempt to bring Hayabusa close enough to gather material from Itokawa’s surface will be made a week later.

Doctor Who: Demon Quest Part 3 – A Shard Of Ice

BBC subsidiary AudioGo releases the third Doctor Who audio drama in the Demon Quest story cycle, starring Tom Baker, Richard Franklin, and Susan Jameson.

Gremlins (expanded soundtrack)

Film Score Monthly releases a remastered and complete 2-CD edition of Jerry Goldsmith‘s soundtrack from the 1984 movie Gremlins, including related singles such as Peter Gabriel’s “Out Out”.

Arrow: Haunted

The 74th episode of Arrow, a modern-day reboot of DC Comics’ Green Arrow superhero starring Stephen Amell, airs on the CW. Caity Lotz (Mad Men, Legends Of Tomorrow) and Matt Ryan (Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior) guest star.

Star Wars: Rebels: Brothers Of The Broken Horn

Cable channel Disney XD premieres the 19th episode of the series Star Wars: Rebels, a CGI animated storyline falling between the original and prequel trilogies of the Star Wars saga.

Crowded House: Woodface (deluxe edition)

Woodface (deluxe edition) Capitol Records releases an expanded deluxe edition of the third Crowded House album, Woodface, originally released in 1991. Demos, outtakes, alternates, and other unreleased material from the album’s infamously long gestation are added.

Captain Rimmer’s Mandolin: Red Dwarf VI (soundtrack)

Composer Howard Goodall releases digitally, via Bandcamp, four albums of music from the sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf, including Goodall’s music from Red Dwarf VI (the show’s sixth season). These releases mark the only time the score from this series has been made available outside of DVD bonus features.

Composer Howard Goodall releases digitally, via Bandcamp, four albums of music from the sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf, including Goodall’s music from Red Dwarf X (the show’s tenth season). These releases mark the only time the score from this series has been made available outside of DVD bonus features.

Dudley Simpson, composer, dies

Dudley Simpson, the Australian-born veteran BBC composer whose sound defined Doctor Who in the 1960s and ’70s, as well as such series as Blake’s 7, The Tomorrow People, Moonbase 3, and many others, dies at the age of 95. Simpson scored his first Doctor Who serial, the second season opener Planet Of Giants, in 1964 at a time when the series often relied on stock music. He solidified his position as Doctor Who’s house composer during the Troughton era, scoring pivotal stories such as The Evil Of The Daleks, The Ice Warriors and The War Games, and became the dominant musical sound of the series during the Pertwee and Tom Baker eras, during which he provided all but a handful of original scores and stock music fell by the wayside. It was only when incoming producer John Nathan-Turner took over as Doctor Who’s showrunner in 1980 that Simpson’s Doctor Who tenure ended. He retired to Australia in the 1990s.
