Saturn I

Saturn IAn unmanned Saturn I rocket is launched, the first practical demonstration of the multiple-engine design which has already been earmarked for future Apollo missions to the moon. Designed by expatriate German rocket engineer Werhner von Braun, the Saturn I is the first iteration of a family of heavy-lift rockets that will include the Saturn IB and the Saturn V; in this configuration, the Saturn I is the first stage of a Saturn V with no second stage.

It’s the only episode of the original series themed to a specific holiday (in this case, Halloween, in which it airs in close proximity), complete with a “giant” black cat, a Macbeth-esque trio of witches, and a script by Psycho novelist Robert Bloch. Mariner 9: mission accomplished

Mariner 9The unmanned NASA/JPL space probe Mariner 9 concludes its mission to map the surface of Mars. After spending more than a year as the first human spacecraft to orbit another planet in the solar system, Mariner 9’s fuel supply has run out, but not before it has obtained over 7,000 images of the surface of Mars, discovering gigantic volcanoes and huge canyons in the process. The detailed photography returned by Mariner 9 is a vitally important tool for scientists and mission planners already hard at work on a potential robotic landing mission to Mars, to be launched later in the 1970s. Though inactive, Mariner 9 remains in orbit of Mars.

This is actually the first episode produced for the fifth season, swapped out for the episode already filmed and intended to be the series finale, and features the message “Faith manages” at the end, signaling the end of Warner Bros.’ failed PTEN network venture and the end of the series’ syndicated run.
