Battle Of The Planets

Fearful Sea Anemone

Battle Of The PlanetsChief Anderson reveals to G-Force that construction on a new secret undersea base on the innermost planet of Galaxy 30 is nearing completion…and that Zoltar is aware of its existence and may be trying to destroy it before it can be used. The Phoenix is launched to patrol the area, and they spot a huge robotic sea anemone on the seafloor. Keyop, still stinging from an encounter with civilians who know about G-Force bot don’t seem to know there is a G-4, sneaks away to try to complete the mission alone. But he may be leading Zoltar straight to the new secret base…

directed by Hisayuki Toriumi
music by Hoyt Curtin and Bob Sakuma

Battle Of The PlanetsVoice Cast: Casey Kasem (Mark), Ronnie Schell (Jason), Janet Waldo (Princess / Susan), Alan Young (7-Zark-7 / Keyop), Alan Dinehart Jr. (Tiny / Chief Anderson), Keye Luke (Zoltar / The Luminous One)

Note: This is one of the most literal translations of the original Gatchaman story to the Battle Of The Planets format, though where changes are made, they’re whoppers – including the construction of Center Neptune’s identical twin in “Galaxy 30” (in the original anime, which is set mostly on Earth in its first season, this marks the first appearance of the Crescent Coral Reef base, animation of which is used as Center Neptune in every Battle Of The Planets episode). Battle Of The Planets

The Jupiter Moon Menace

Battle Of The PlanetsFlaming meteorites begin raining down on heavily populated cities on Earth, wrecking havoc, death and destruction. Chief Anderson analyzes samples of the meteorites and discovers that they originated on Callisto, a moon of Jupiter. The Phoenix is launched toward the moon, where it is discovered that Zoltar and Commander Typhon of the planet Scorpius control a huge, scorpion-like vehicle which mines moon rocks and then fires them at Earth. G-Force must destroy the mecha before it destroys Earth.

Note: The scenes of panicked Earth citizens fleeing (and dying) from the original Gatchaman episode are excised completely; 7-Zark-7 says he has sent an evacuation order to prevent deaths on the ground. (Handy, that.) Also removed is Jason destroying the mecha’s control room with a hail of machine gun fire. For the corresponding episode of Kagaku Ninjatai Gatchaman, click here.

Season 2 Star Blazers

2201: Yamato Returns!

Star Blazers2201 A.D.: In the year it has taken Earth to recover from the Gamilon holocaust, more distant reaches of space – twice as far from Earth as Iscandar – have been falling to the might of the Comet Empire, under the command of Prince Zordar. Worse still, Zordar has his sights set on Earth – and Leader Desslok, having barely escaped his last encounter with the Star Force, has joined the Comet Empire as a military advisor. Desslok’s goal is not the greater glory of the Comet Empire, but his own vengeance against the crew of the Argo. The Argo is now commanded by Deputy Captain Derek Wildstar, and many of her crew members have been reassigned to other duties. Nova, Sandor, Dr. Sane and IQ-9 have been stationed on Earth, while Wildstar and Homer are among the few original crew members on the Argo for the ship’s security patrol of the outer solar system.

The Comet Empire’s first attack in Earth space is unsuccessful, and the Argo barely escapes – but Wildstar suspects that his unknown attackers are only beginning to make their presence known.

As luck – or Starbuck’s total lack thereof – would have it, he fails to avoid trouble, falling victim to a prison escapee and losing his ship. While Commander Adama and Galactica’s other pilots try to figure out who has taken control of Starbuck’s high-speed fighter, Starbuck finds himself stuck in a forgotten human prison, where he finds a vital clue to Earth’s location.

Jason Of Star Command Season 1

Marooned In Time

Jason Of Star CommandJason’s latest planetoid hiding place seems to be a time warp – characters from Earth’s distant past appear and disappear when the Starfire first lands. But Jason, Nicole and Parsafoot are soon captured by a man claiming to be treasure-hungry pirate Captain Kidd, who takes Wiki to help him find a treasure Dragos has left on this world. Typically for Dragos, the treasure turns out to be a trap – but despite the danger, the loot is needed to power up Jason’s Starfire.

The Comet Appears: Remodeling The Yamato!

Star BlazersThe Argo returns to Earth, and survives a close brush with the new flagship of the Earth Defense Force fleet, the Andromeda. Wildstar reunites with Nova on Earth, and the rest of the original Argo crew gather at a memorial to Captain Avatar to commemorate his life and his accomplishments. But the peace is short-lived – the Comet Empire creates a power surge that disables electrical systems on spaceships and on Earth, and sends a wing of reconnaisance ships as well. At precisely the same moment, a powerful signal is beamed straight to Earth from a distant world…but is jammed by the Comet Empire’s interference.

Attack Of The Dragons

Jason Of Star CommandDragos spawns an electron storm in space, leaving Jason’s just-launched Starfire to be buffeted in the deep space equivalent of choppy waters. But with Captain Kidd aboard, Jason is able to pit the wits of one pirate against another (since Kidd is of the opinion that Dragos is little more than another scurvy dog of the high seas). Dragos dispatches all of his firepower to attack Space Academy, leaving himself open to attack from Jason himself. But can the Academy withstand the attack while Jason goes after Dragos?

Notes: There’s no small irony in the scene of Commander Canarvin demanding quicker results from Space Academy’s engine room (since Canarvin actor James Doohan was often on the receiving end of such demands in Star Trek). The voices of Dragos’ fighter pilots are, in fact, the heavily-processed voice of Filmation honcho Lou Scheimer.

Earth’s Crisis Awakens Yamato!

Star BlazersSandor decodes the message sent to Earth. The sender identifies herself as Trelaina of Telezart, and warns of the danger of the Comet Empire. Wildstar and Sandor analyze the data regarding the attack on the Argo and the power surge, growing increasingly alarmed at the strength displayed by Earth’s new nemesis. But the leaders of the EDF don’t seem to share this concern – and Wildstar prepares to bring the Star Force back together and relaunch the Argo, even if it means stealing the ship. Nova is uncertain of whether she can stand another extended tour of duty in space, especially if she and the rest of the crew would be considered outlaws. And in deep space, Desslok assembles the surviving Gamilon generals to prepare for a new strike on Earth…

The Stones Of Blood

Doctor WhoThe search for the Key to Time brings the Doctor and Romana to modern-day England, very close to a stone circle being studied by Professor Amelia Rumford and her friend Vivien Fey. Romana is alarmed to see real evidence that a live animal may have been sacrificed at the stones very recently, but is told by Professor Rumford that it’s probably just the work of an overenthusiastic local group of Druid recreationists. But it’s not just would-be Druids who are moving around the circle – Professor Rumford is convinced that the stones themselves are moving. The Doctor and K-9 witness this for themselves, as an unknown force uses an apparition of the Doctor to lure Romana over the edge of a cliff. The stakes are higher now than anything that the Druid afficionados could imagine – one of the galaxy’s most feared criminals is hiding out on Earth, using the rock-like Ogri to enforce her will…and hide her identity.

The Disappearing Man

Jason Of Star CommandA Seeker spacecraft appears out of nowhere near Space Academy and disappears again, reappearing moments later in the landing bay. Jason and friends record strange sounds aboard the empty Seeker, but when played back at a slow speed, the strange sounds turn out to be the voice of missing Space Academy cadet Matt Prentiss, who has been missing for a year. Professor Parsafoot devises a way to speed Jason up into the same “time dimension” as Prentiss, but after Jason finds the missing cadet and returns him to normal time, the device malfunctions, stranding Jason.

Jason of Star CommandCast: Craig Littler (Jason), Sid Haig (Dragos), Susan O’Hanlon (Capt. Nicole Davidoff), Charlie Dell (Prof. E.J. Parsafoot), James Doohan (Commander Canarvin), John Berwick (Lt. Matt Prentiss)

Notes: Matt Prentiss is the only human character to carry over to Jason Of Star Command from Space Academy (original plans called for Commander Gampu to give Jason his orders, but a dispute with actor Jonathan Harris over merchandising royalties short-circuited the producers’ plans for such major continuity elements). He previously appeared in the Space Academy episode The Cheat. This episode shares many conceptual similarities with the Star Trek episode Wink Of An Eye – but to give credit where it is due, Jason figures the mystery of the mosquito-like voices much faster than Kirk does! In line with the notion that five years of his life have passed in the year that he has been missing, Prentiss’ hair has greyed (despite the fact that he still appears to be in his twenties).
