A Matter Of Life And Death

Space: 1999An Eagle is launched to reconnoiter a promising planet which the Moonbase Alpha crew has dubbed “Terra Nova” – new Earth. The two men aboard the ship return with good news – they’ve found a planet with an Earthlike atmosphere and almost unlimited resources – but just as they make their final approach back to the moon, an electrical discharge envelops the Eagle, incapacitating the crew. The ship is still brought in for a safe landing, with the crew alive but unconscious – and carrying an extra passenger who Dr. Russell says is her husband, missing and presumed dead after his last space mission ended in disaster five years ago. Though he is breathing and seems to be alive, none of the medical instruments indicate life signs. Commander Koenig decides to postpone any further visits to Terra Nova, let alone any colonization operations, until the mystery of Russell’s husband. When the long-lost astronaut awakens, Helena tells him of Koenig’s plans to colonize Terra Nova – and then he lashes out at her with the same energy that almost brought the Eagle down.

Ark II

The Mind Group

Ark IIActing on information that three children with unusual telepathic powers have gone missing from a nearby village, Ark II ventures into dangerous territory. Jonah brings the vehicle to a stop when all of the members of his crew hear one of the children talk in their minds. (Just to be sure, Adam looks under the table, but doesn’t find anyone there.) The children have been capture by Warlord Brack, someone who Jonah knows all too well from a previous encounter. One of the children escapes and Jonah takes him back to the Ark, where Ruth learns that the children have powers of telekinesis as well as telepathy. Brack lies to his remaining captives, convincing them that the Ark II crew are even worse than he is. After Samuel, Adam and Jonah take the Roamer to look for the other children, Ruth finds herself in trouble, and trusting in the children’s telekinetic abilities is her only hope.

The Flieswritten by Robert Specht
directed by Hollingsworth Morse
music by Yvette Blais & Jeff Michael and Horta-Mahana

Cast: Terry Lester (Jonah), Jean Marie Hon (Ruth), Jose Flores (Samuel), Malachi Throne (War Lord Brack), Johnny Avery (Aaron), Dawn Lyn (Bina), Billy Simpson (Caleb), Lou Scheimer (voice of Adam)

Notes: A valuable lesson from this episode – telepaths can always talk with their mouths full. For once, a science fiction series manages to not treat a force field as a miraculously selective porous surface: the whole complication of the plot is that there’s limited air in the space inside the force field. Brack was last encountered in the series pilot, The Flies, alongside the only other recurring characters in the series, Fagon and Tick (who reappeared in The Drought).

Star Force: Fugitive Alien II Story: In flashback, we learn the story of Ken, a former member of the Star Wolves, a group of intergalactic warriors from the planet Valna. Ken had refused to kill a child and his insubordination led to the death of his best friend. Finding himself alone and on the run from the Star Wolves, he was taken in by the crew of the starship Bacchus 3 (Captain Joe, Rocky, Dan and Tammy), who eventually learned to trust him. Rita, Ken’s girlfriend and sister to his deceased best friend, had been sent to kill him, but died in the ensuing confrontation. Now, Ken and his crewmates set out on a mission to the planet Cesar to destroy a powerful enemy weapon. They take on board a Cesar captive to guide them, Colonel Irulen, but he almost immediately causes unrest. After traveling through a black hole, everyone in the crew except Ken becomes ill from the side effects of the journey. Meanwhile the ship drifts closer to Demeter, a star about to go supernova, leaving Colonel Irulen as their only hope to get free of its pull. Through the combined forces of Ken and Colonel Irulen, the ship is repaired and they escape the star in the nick of time. Arriving at Cesar, they are attacked when Colonel Irulen’s attempt to secure passage is rebuffed. When Ken successfully fends off the attackers, Colonel Irulen guides the ship to “The Devil’s Desert”, a desolate area on Cesar. Captain Joe stubbornly insists on going on the expedition to find the enemy weapon, so Rocky shoots him with a tranquilizer to keep him safe. Most of the crew goes instead and, with the help of Colonel Irulen, manage to capture an enemy outpost and disguise themselves as enemy soldiers. Finding the installation in short order, they brazenly walk right in and are able to make their way to the heart of the enemy weapon and set a time bomb to destroy it. At the last moment, Colonel Irulen has a change of heart and attempts to stop the detonation, but is shot by a Cesar guard. The others attempt to make their escape, but one is captured and Ken goes back for him. The rescue is successful and the bomb goes off as planned, destroying the weapon and the entire installation. Meanwhile, Valna’s leader, Halkan, sends his Rangers after a powerful bomb developed on Earth. The crew of the Bacchus 3 are assigned to escort the young daughter of the bomb’s creator and are almost immediately attacked by the Rangers and the young girl and the plans to the bomb are taken. They also attempt to get to Ken by using a double of his late mother to infiltrate the Bacchus 3, but he sees through the ploy. Ken decides to go to Valna and confront Halkan personally. The Bacchus 3 follows and attacks the Valna fortress. A personal combat between Ken and Halkan results in the death of his mother’s double, who sacrifices herself to save Ken. Halkan attempts to escape in a starfighter, but Ken chases after him and defeats him in a dogfight. As the Bacchus 3 leaves Valna, Ken decides to stay behind to help rebuild its civilization.

The Q and the Gray

Star Trek: VoyagerStardate 50384.2: After the crew witnesses a supernova explosion from a safe distance, Janeway retires for the evening, only to be wooed in her quarters by Q, who claims to want to mate with her. Naturally, Janeway rebuffs Q’s every advance, and eventually a female member of the Q Continuum appears, claiming that she is bonded to Q. As an argument ensues between the Qs, more imminent supernovae are detected and Janeway orders the ship clear of the destruction, but with so many stars exploding, Voyager can’t avoid all of the shockwaves. Just before the first wave hits the ship, Q whisks Janeway into a representation of the Q Continuum in the context of the American Civil War. Q explains that the Continuum is in the throes of its own civil war, sparked by the death of a fellow Q he prosecuted on charges that a Q suicide would imbalance their whole society. Q’s desire to mate with Janeway is the result of his belief that, from his past experiences with Janeway and Picard, a hybrid child would introduce the omnipotent Q to the nobility of humans. Caught in a civil war among immortal beings, and hoping that her crew can enlist the help of the Q’s scorned mate, Janeway tries to negotiate a peace with the Q traditionalists…but she’s unaware that her attempt to open talks will do nothing more than deliver Q into the hands of his enemies.

Caerdroia

Doctor Who: CaerdroiaThe Doctor is asleep in the interzone between worlds, and the Kro’Ka appears to torment him – only to find that it must put up with Charley and C’rizz, who quickly become aware that the Kro’Ka seems to be powerless while the Time Lord is unconscious. Once awakened, the Doctor is subjected to a kind of mind-probing technique by the Kro’Ka, but he quickly gains the upper hand on the interzone guardian, forcing it to tell him, at least in general terms, where the TARDIS is located. The Doctor follows the trail to a place called Caerdroia, a surreal world where verdant hills populated by seemingly normal cows and rabbits lead to a circular maze. But that’s not the most surreal thing about Caerdroia – topping that list is the fact that the Doctor has emerged from the interzone in what seems like three aspects of his character: one rational, one inquisitive and easily distracted, and one dark and quick to anger. Charley and C’rizz can only tag along with the three Doctors as they look for a way out of the maze – and a way to find out who’s holding the Kro’Ka’s leash.
