Max Headroom Season 1 (US)

Blanks

Max HeadroomJust as Simon Peller wins another term through the public telelection system, satellite signals go haywire, interrupting broadcasts on all the networks. And TV isn’t the only thing affected – even bank service has been disrupted. Then an ultimatum is issued: if Peller doesn’t reverse his policy of imprisoning all blanks – unregistered citizens with enough computer know-how to remove their identities from the central computer – the central computer will be crashed. Bryce and Theora hatch a plan to find the hackers by getting their attention with the most advanced artificial intelligence in the world – Max himself. But when the hackers take the bait and keep him, not allowing Max to return to Bryce’s computer, Edison has to resort to more extreme measures to keep a systems crash from laying the city to waste at sundown…and someone he considers a friend may be on the wrong side of the fight.

Conflicts of Interest

Babylon 5Preparations are under way for the first “Voice of the Resistance” broadcast from B5, but the one thing no one has been able to figure out is how to get the signal from the station to anywhere outside of the sector. Franklin, having just returned from Mars, suggests using the almost limitless power at Draal’s disposal on Epsilon 3. In response to his recent arguments with Garibaldi, and sensing that the security chief will not be returning to take back his job, Sheridan orders Zack to confiscate Garibaldi’s sidearm, identicard and link. Zack reluctantly carries out his orders, unaware that Garibaldi keeps a spare identicard. Wade, who earlier urged Garibaldi to betray Sheridan, enlists Garibaldi’s help to get an unspecified visitor through station security – and the visitor turns out to be Lise Hampton, Garibaldi’s ex-girlfriend, with a mysterious cargo in her possession. Garibaldi skirts his own security teams to get Lise through customs, but the result is a vicious firefight and promise from Sheridan that he’ll be put off the station if he is involved in any more trouble. And Ivanova finally kicks off her first newscast with the help of the family of an old friend.

But when the captain pries further into the pages of history, she discovers that Shannon O’Donnell may not have been the pioneering hero that inspired a young Kathryn Janeway to join Starfleet, and that her part in the Millennium Gate project may have been very small, yet very pivotal…and certainly not a fantastic feat of heroism.

Enterprise Season 03 Star Trek

E2

Star Trek: EnterpriseA battered duplicate of the Enterprise, apparently crewed by the descendants of Archer’s crew (and led by Lorian, a descendant of T’Pol and Trip), emerges through a temporal rift. Lorian and his crew recount a grim history for the crew of Archer’s Enterprise: an anomaly sucked the ship into the past, and despite the best efforts of the crew’s descendants Earth lost the war with the Xindi, only T’Pol is still alive – and the crew of “tomorrow’s” Enterprise must return to their own future to restore the timelines. But first, Lorian wants something from Archer’s ship that could strand the Enterprise’s original crew – and stop them from preventing the events that led to Earth’s destruction in the first place.

Doctor Who New Series Season 03

The Lazarus Experiment

Doctor WhoMartha is crestfallen when the Doctor brings her home, announcing that this is where their travels together end. When she sees her sister in a TV press conference, however, Martha is intrigued. When he hears Professor Richard Lazarus announce the unveiling of an invention that will “change what it means to be human,” the Doctor decides to investigate. He and Martha go to the public demonstration of Lazarus’ new invention, which – after a near-overload is averted by the Doctor before it can destroy the entire building – apparently regresses the elderly inventor to his youth. But the Doctor, examining Lazarus’ DNA, discovers that the transformation is only just beginning, and when the first corpse is found, the Doctor believes that Lazarus is mutating into something that feeds on living flesh. He sets out to put Lazarus’ evolutionary experiment to an end, but can’t do so without putting Martha in mortal danger. And that’s when Martha’s mother – who has apparently received confidential information about the Doctor directly from the office of Harold Saxon, a candidate for Prime Minister – decides that Martha’s TARDIS travels must end.

Guest Cast: Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Tish Jones), Reggie Yates (Leo Jones), Adjoa Andoh (Francine Jones), Mark Gatiss (Lazarus), Thelma Barlow (Lady Thaw), Lucy O’Connell (Olive Lady), Bertie Carvel (Mysterious Man)

Notes: Actor Mark Gatiss has written several Doctor Who stories (including The Unquiet Dead and The Idiot’s Lantern) for television, Big Finish’s audio adventures, and numerous novels, and has lent his voice to such characters as the Master in Big Finish audios as well. The Doctor seems to have some experience as an organist, as he demonstrates both here and in 1985’s Attack Of The Cybermen. Harold Saxon doesn’t appear here, but is mentioned in The Runaway Bride and Smith & Jones; “Vote Saxon” signs were seen in the backgrounds of those episodes, and even in the Torchwood episode Captain Jack Harkness. On its original UK broadcast, The Lazarus Experiment concluded with an extended trailer showing scene from much of the remainder of the season, since there was no “next week’s episode” – the series took a one-week break to be pre-empted by the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest.

Season 1 Star Trek Strange New Worlds

Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: ProdigyStardate 1739.12: Recovering from his recent experiences involving the loss of the starship Discovery, Captain Christopher Pike has retreated to a cabin in Montana to ride horses, watch movies, and enjoy the companionship of Captain Batel of the U.S.S. Cayuga. But Batel must soon return to her ship, and Pike has been avoiding answering a persistent series of hails to his communicator… which brings new, less welcome company to his door: Admiral Robert April, with orders for Pike to be aboard the Enterprise in mere hours for an urgent mission to recover the ship’s missing first officer. Pike’s Number One, Commander Una Chin-Riley, opted to take part in a first contact mission aboard the U.S.S. Archer at planet Kiley 279 rather than taking shore leave; the Archer has gone silent.

At Kiley 279, the Enterprise finds a pre-warp civilization in turmoil, not a warp-capable society ready to make contact with the Federation. The crew determines that the warp signature that attracted that Archer was indeed warp technology, but geared toward manufacturing massively destructive weapons rather than a faster-than-light drive. Pike, Spock, and security chief La’an Noonien Singh beam down to Kiley, disguised as natives of that planet, to recover their missing contact team and to find out how they acquired the technology that they may yet use to obliterate themselves. It turns out that the scientists of Kiley merely watched nearby Federation starships in action – namely the incident that marked the last time anyone in the 23rd century saw the starship Discovery – and Pike decides that, as the Federation is responsible for bringing Kiley 279 to the brink of extinction, it’s his responsibility to stabilize the planet’s precarious peace, despite this violating Starfleet’s non-interference rules.

Star Trek DiscoveryNotes: As these iterations of Captain Pike, Spock, and Una “Number One” Chin-Riley originated in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery, there are numerous references to the events of that season, including the loss of Spock’s adopted sister Michael Burnham, Discovery‘s opening of a wormhole to the future, and Pike’s time-crystal-induced vision of his own future at the Klingon monastery on Boreth. Among the display of planets with which first contact is only now being conducted, other than Kiley 279, is Gamma Trianguli VI, also known as the planet dominated by Vaal (from the original series episode The Apple), Scalos (a planet which will later be found uninhabited in the original series episode Wink Of An Eye), and Xahea, which raises the strange possibility that Ensign Tilly’s meeting with Me Hani Ika Hali Ka Po (Short Treks: Runaway) may have been among the first contacts with that world. Captain Pike has a fondness – perhaps, if you’re Captain Batel, too much fondness – for the 20th century film The Day The Earth Stood Still. Star Trek DiscoveryAdmiral Robert April later boarded the Enterprise with his wife en route to their retirement in the animated Star Trek episode The Counter-Clock Incident. That a shuttlecraft has been named after Discovery‘s Commander Stamets would seem to be in line with Starfleet’s (and Section 31’s) official cover story that Discovery was destroyed in the 23rd century, with all hands lost. (Of course, Discovery‘s adventures continued nearly a millennium later, chronicled in that series’ third season.) After enthusiastic fan response to Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn stepping into the roles of characters from Gene Roddenberry’s original Star Trek pilot The Cage in season two of Star Trek: Discovery, the characters were given further exposure in the second batch of Short Treks before Strange New Worlds was greenlit in 2020, during the summer of the COVID-19 lockdown. The series couldn’t begin filming until early 2021, and when it launched in 2022, it streamed concurrently with the finale episodes of Star Trek: Picard‘s second season. This premiere episode was the most-watched Paramount Plus original production of 2022; a second season had been greenlit before the first season premiered.
