Video production, diaper changes, weddings, parties, anything

We’re diverse around here like that. I have a humorous gadget story to tell, on the day after the latest Mid South Gaming Get Together up at Brian’s (icbrkr) place. On the occasion of the first such get-together, in December 2004, Flack festooned us both with copious garage sale and thrift store finds. One of the goodies he gave me was this Radio Shack sound FX generator, complete in the box with instructions, AC adapter and everything. In fact…let me check the ol’ server…yep, here’s the original picture I took at the time:

I distinctly remember him saying that he had snagged this for a buck at a yard sale, had no use for it, and so here it was, mine for the taking. The really funny thing about it? This bought-for-a-buck-at-a-yard-sale piece of electronic fun, given to me for nothing, is now a vital cog in the video production wheel around here:

Propped up on top of the Avid breakout box next to the left channel speaker, That Which Once Cost Rob A Buck now regulates the audio output from my miniDV camcorders, which would otherwise be pumping their sound into the Avid at an impossibly loud, overmodulated volume.

I don’t have that problem with sound coming out from the Avid to be recorded into a miniDV machine – that literally comes out of a different box. (Think I’m joking? Look up “byzantine” in the dictionary. There’s probably a photo of the back of an Avid setup. And then something about some empire or other.)

Camera 2

In short, Rob’s one-buck yard sale find is what gets your CGE DVDs made, your horse videos made, and your Phosphor Dot Fossils DVDs and online video segments made. With that vastly lucky find in mind, I try never to miss one of the get-togethers, though I think I was justified this weekend, what with the few-days-away-from-being-a-month-old baby and all. (A month old? My God. Slow down there, little buckaroo, there’s no hurry.)

I still think these get togethers should be called “Arkansas Retro Gaming Hoedown”, because then the acronym would be ARGH. Granted, it’s not all retro, but just think, we could get T-shirts every time that show some video game character’s death scene with a cartoon balloon reading “ARGH!” (I know we’re talking marketing for something that maybe four or five guys show up for, but work with me here.)

Daleks on display

Last and least: obligatory shot of bits of my toy collection under glass that weren’t always under glass: a display case full of Daleks. (If you think that’s funny, get a load of this – not all of my ’80s/’90s Dalek collection would fit in there.) 😯
