Telezart: Disperse Into Space!

Star BlazersThe Comet Empire accelerates toward Telezart, anticipating no problem in conquering a planet populated by only one person. The Argo crew, especially Venture, is helpless to do anything but watch as the mighty comet barrels toward the planet. But Wildstar has to calm Venture’s worst fears and use the momentary diversion to escape from Telezart’s solar system and make a head start toward Earth. Trelaina’s warns Prince Zordar to halt his advance, but the leader of the Comet Empire refuses to heed the warning. Trelaina’s response is swift and surprisingly powerful – she literally detonates the planet Telezart, forcing the planet to shred itself in the comet’s path. The crew of the Argo watches in awe from a distance as the Comet Empire emerges from the huge explosion, nearly destroyed and now pushed off of its course for Earth, but still in one piece.

Night Riders Of Kalimar – Part 1

Alien WorldsWord of a glowstone strike reaches the prospectors gathered at the Rising Star Saloon on the asteroid Vesta, setting off a new gold rush. Miners beat a hasty path to the asteroid Kalimar, and the ISA sends Maura, Graydon and Buddy to Kalimar as well, giving Maura a chance to study glowstone up close for the first time. They meet up with Buddy’s old friend, cardsharp Travis Silverthorn, also en route to Kalimar, hoping to hustle the newly-rich miners at the poker table. When they arrive at Kalimar, however, it appears that the miners have already become victims, but with considerably higher stakes. The Night Riders of Kalimar, eyeless predatory lizards, have come for them all.

Pressure Point

Blake's 7Blake decides to mount a raid on Central Control, the heart of the Federation on Earth. Avon and Vila soon arrive, and the crew is off again, working its way through a minefield of traps and finally reaching Central Control: an empty room where Travis and his guards wait. Jenna rescues them by holding Servalan hostage with the help of Kasabi’s daughter, and the crew flees. Travis lobs a percussion grenade at them while they are all still underground, and the explosion triggers a collapse of the roof which kills Gan.

Supertrain

Supertrain (pilot)

SupertrainWinfield Root, chairman of the board and founder of Trans-Allied Corporation, announces a bold plan to reinvigorate American passenger rail service with a new breed of train, Supertrain. Running from New York City to Los Angeles in a matter of hours, Supertrain is an atomic-powered steam locomotive with the amenities normally associated with luxury cruises. Root finds little support among his executive board, but the plan will proceed anyway.

Supertrain pulls out of Grand Central Station on its inaugural voyage with a full complement of passengers aboard, among them Michael Post, a man up to his eyeballs in debt to all the wrong people; Cindy Chappell, married to a man who spends the entire trip complaining about her presence (and yet doesn’t want her to leave his sight); Hollywood movie director David Belnik, heading to L.A. with his entourage to begin his next project; and at least one man who is on the train solely for the purpose of killing Michael Post. Winfield Root is aboard too, along with his granddaughter, who is almost disturbingly attracted to a member of Supertrain’s on-board crew.

The dazzling luxuries aboard Supertrain, from its sauna room to its discotheque, become the sites of attempts on Post’s life. When one of those attempts goes awry, resulting in a seemingly random murder of which Post is suspected of being the killer instead of the intended victim, the train is brought to a stop so an FBI agent can be brought aboard. Post pleads innocent to the murder, but confides in the circumstances that have him worried about his continued survival. But he soon discovers that he is no safer on Supertrain with an FBI agent on his tail than he is anywhere else…

SupertrainCast: Steve Lawrence (Mike Post), Char Fontane (Cindy Chappell), Don Stroud (Jack Fisk), Keenan Wynn (Winfield Root), Deborah Benson (Barbara Root), Ron Masak (Fred), Don Meredith (Rick Prince), Vicki Lawrence (Karen Prince), George Hamilton (David Belnik), Stella Stevens (Lucy), Fred Williamson (Al Roberts), Edward Andrews (Harry Flood), Patrick Collins (David Noonan), Harrison Page (George Boone), Robert Alda (Dr. Lewis), Nita Talbot (Rose Casey), Aarika Wells (Gilda), William Nuckols (Wally), Michael DeLano (Lou Atkins), Charlie Brill (Robert), John Karlen (Quinn), Frank R. SupertrainNotes: Intended to be a sort of futuristic version of The Love Boat, Supertrain was a dazzlingly expensive disaster for NBC. It was initially produced, and its pilot directed, by Dan Curtis, producer and director of such TV cult classics as Dark Shadows and the pair of TV movies that led to Kolchak: The Night Stalker. Supertrain’s impressive-for-the-time miniature model work and its matching full-size “futuristic train” standing sets made it the most expensive television series in history to date, but its plunging post-pilot-movie ratings saw NBC pulling the plug after multiple attempts to retool and reschedule. This by itself would’ve simply been expensive, but when paired with the extravagant money that NBC put on the table for the U.S. broadcast rights to the 1980 Summer Olympics (a cost it then had to eat when the United States boycotted the Olympics, held that year in Moscow), it nearly bankrupted the network. SupertrainHad Supertrain run to a full season, the expense involved in the sets and miniatures would have been amortized over the budgets of 20-odd episodes. As it is, the show lasted ten hours, meaning that fully half a million dollars of each episode’s budget was spent on those sets and effects. The custom model footage shows Supertrain running on wider-gauge tracks than a standard railroad, though many of the railroad POV shots were obviously filmed on a normal-gauge railroad. Additionally, though the “running firefight atop the cars of a moving train” is a staple of American TV and cinema, the tornado-speed movement of Supertrain should make such a scenario physically impossible (unless, of course, the script calls for it). Supertrain!

The Decisive Battle: All Ships Combat Ready!

Star BlazersThe Argo warps back toward Earth, desperately trying to join the planetary defense forces before the Comet Empire can put itself back on its heading for Earth. Prince Zordar, already anticipating Wildstar’s mad dash back to Earth, orders an invasion fleet to proceed toward Earth’s solar system. With the Argo still at least another warp away, the defense of Earth rests with Captain Gideon and the EDF’s flagship, Andromeda. Gideon gathers all available ships, overriding their orders from Earth, to cut the Comet Empire forces off at Saturn. In the meantime, Desslock – who has been locked in a prison cell by Princess Invidia – manages to get free, take her hostage, and fight his way off of the Comet Empire and rejoin the few remaining Gamilon ships. No longer worried about Zordar’s mission to take over Earth, Desslock is hell-bent on destroying the Star Force.

Trial

Blake's 7Overwhelmed with remorse for Gan’s death, Blake teleports himself down to an unidentified planet to serve his penance, leaving no clues for the crew to locate him. Meanwhile, Servalan has brought up a charge of mass murder to file against Travis to have him discharged from space service, and she has also seen to it that Travis has no chance of an innocent verdict or an appeal. Blake discovers that his planet is not as uninhabited as Zen has postulated and is forced to find his way back to the ship when the planet turns out to be a living organism – and a hungry one at that. Once back on the Liberator, Blake decides to attack Space Command Headquarters, and the attack is a devastating one with one oversight: the confusion of the attack allows Travis to escape with his own ship, now a renegade himself.

And A Cup Of Kindness Too

SupertrainAt Grand Central Station, a man collapses on the floor and no one stops to help him – no one, that is, until already-distracted Jack Nordoff helps him up. Jack is not there to catch a train, but to see off his soon-to-be-ex-wife before the divorce proceedings heat up. The man Jack helped, Waldo Chase, cracks a joke about needing a hit man instead of a lawyer, and then they part ways…until Jack calls his wife on the train, and discovers that Chase is also on the train, having followed here. Chase says he owes Jack a favor, and always pays his debts…and that all Jack’s troubles will soon be over. Jack now has to find a way to beat Supertrain to its Chicago stop to try to save his wife’s life…but who can outrun Supertrain?

SupertrainNotes: The second episode is a marked improvement over the first, if only for the (guest) star power on display, and the fact that it’s only an hour long. Dick Van Dyke needed no introduction to TV audiences, having starred in his own sitcom, The Dick Van Dyke show, from 1961 through 1966. After several years of steady work, most recently (at the time) a stint on the Carol Burnett Show, he was exploring both comedic and dramatic guest roles in prime time, and this one was distinctly unnerving. Opposite Van Dyke is Larry Linville (1939-2000), one of the founding cast members of the long-running sitcom M*A*S*H, on which he played the uptight Major Frank Burns from 1972 through 1977. The episode’s title comes from the Anglicized lyrics to “Auld Lang Syne”. Supertrain!

Yamato: Collision In Warp!

Star BlazersThe Argo re-enters Earth’s solar system, and Sgt. Knox asks Wildstar to make a stop at the planet Brumis. Wildstar and Venture break up the fight, and Wildstar orders Knox to take a fighter to Brumis to pay homage to his fallen men. IQ-9 accompanies Knox to the planet. But the brass at Earth Defense Headquarters isn’t happy with the Argo’s stopover – the people of Earth are in a panic, retreating back to the underground shelters they occupied during the Gamilon attacks. The Resurrectionists Of Lethe – Part 1

Alien WorldsDr. Richard Nicholson stops by Starlab en route to an award ceremony on Earth, where he will be honored for a major biomolecular breakthrough. But his celebration is short-lived: a toxic fuel leak aboard the shuttle due to carry him to Earth kills Nicholson as his wife, who had been speaking to him via radio, listens. Nicholson is deemed worthy of being buried on the artificial mortuarty satellite, Lethe, whose administrator, Simon Toddmaster, invites Nicholson’s widow to Lethe, with an unusual promise that she will see her dead husband live again.

Notes: Prior to his stint as the head of the Lethe satellite, Toddmaster had previously served prison time for smuggling glowstone (Night Riders Of Kalimar). From the “vintage 1970s humor” file: former President Richard Nixon is apparently interred on Lethe, and left an “18 minute last will and testament tape”…which Toddmaster is unsurprised to discover is blank. Unusually for Alien Worlds, an exact date is given for this episode (April 28, 2026).
