Fireball XL5

Planet 46

Fireball XL5At World Space Patrol Headquarters in Space City, the alert is sounded when Colonel Zero’s long-range radar spots a massive atomic missile hurtling toward Earth. The ship closest to the missile’s course, Fireball XL5, is diverted from returning to Earth after a long exploratory mission to intercept the missile. Commander Steve Zodiac and his crew, Dr. Venus, Professor Matthew Matic, and trusty Robert the Robot, destroy the missile and trace its origins to Planet 46, discovering a secret lair and a stash of stolen diamonds. When Steve is captured trying to enter the hideout, Dr. Venus tries to return to Fireball, only to be captured herself. The alien creatures inhabiting Planet 46 have a backup missile with Earth’s name on it – and a diabolical plan to use Fireball XL5’s crew to deliver it…over Steve Zodiac’s dead body if necessary.

Fireball XL5Cast: David Graham (Professor Matthew Matic / Lt. 90 / Subterrain 1 / Canaveral voice / Jodrell Bank voice), Sylvia Anderson (Doctor Venus), Paul Maxwell (Colonel Steve Zodiac / Okinawa Station voice), John Bluthal (Commander Zero / Subterrain Leader / Subterrain 2), Gerry Anderson (Robert the Robot)

Notes: This is the first episode of the last black & white Supermarionation series, introducing a new cast of puppet characters as well as concepts that would carry forward through many episodes of the series, including Fireball XL5“oxygen pills” that would enable un-space-suited life forms to breathe in the vacuum of space (and, amazingly, not succumb to the extreme cold and pressure loss of the void – amazing stuff, those oxygen pills). Gerry Anderson performed an uncredited function in every episode of the series, providing the buzzy voice of Robert the Robot using an electrical palate device that – ironically – fellow voice actor David Graham would utilize in later years to voice the early versions of the Cybermen in Doctor Who.

The Man Who Was Never Born

The Outer LimitsAfter an unusual incident rocks his spacecraft on approach to Earth after an eight-month solo mission, astronaut Joseph Reardon requests instructions for re-entry and receives no reply. Reardon manages to land his vehicle on his own, but finds himself in a vast wasteland with only a single occupant, a horribly mutated man named Andro. Andro tells Reardon that the year is now 2148 – 200 years in the astronaut’s future – and that the human race has all but been destroyed by an experiment by a biologist named Bertram Cabot, Jr. Horrified and galvanized by what he sees, Reardon is determined to return to space in an attempt to re-create the conditions that warped him into the future. He brings Andro with him, hoping that the sight of the disfigured man will convince Cabot, or those around him, to end his experiments. But when the ship travels through the time warp again, the timeline has already changed – and Reardon ceases to exist, leaving Andro to stop Cabot’s experiments on his own.

All That Glisters

Space: 1999A planet is detected with traces of minerals vital to Moonbase Alpha’s survival, and the command staff takes a survey Eagle down to explore the surface. What they don’t expect to find is a large, glowing mineral deposit. They cut off a sample and return to the Eagle with it, but during routine examination, it emits a bright life and Tony falls to the floor, dead. Commander Koenig’s first instinct is to leave the planet immediately, though Maya and Dr. Russell feel that the key to learning what happened to Tony, or perhaps reviving him, lies with further study of the rock sample. As Koenig leads the survey team back out to the surface, Dr. Russell is stunned when Tony rises and walks out of the Eagle, returning a short while later with another chunk of the glowing rock. The survey teams rushes back to the Eagle, where power has been drained and contact has been lost with Moonbase Alpha. When Koenig moves to remove the new sample, it seems to attack him too, though not fatally. With time running out, Koenig is now convinced that not only is the rock a life form, but it’s been subtly guiding the mission from the start.

Jason Of Star Command Season 1

Attack Of The Dragons

Jason Of Star CommandDragos spawns an electron storm in space, leaving Jason’s just-launched Starfire to be buffeted in the deep space equivalent of choppy waters. But with Captain Kidd aboard, Jason is able to pit the wits of one pirate against another (since Kidd is of the opinion that Dragos is little more than another scurvy dog of the high seas). Dragos dispatches all of his firepower to attack Space Academy, leaving himself open to attack from Jason himself. But can the Academy withstand the attack while Jason goes after Dragos?

Notes: There’s no small irony in the scene of Commander Canarvin demanding quicker results from Space Academy’s engine room (since Canarvin actor James Doohan was often on the receiving end of such demands in Star Trek). The voices of Dragos’ fighter pilots are, in fact, the heavily-processed voice of Filmation honcho Lou Scheimer.

The Stones Of Blood

Doctor WhoThe search for the Key to Time brings the Doctor and Romana to modern-day England, very close to a stone circle being studied by Professor Amelia Rumford and her friend Vivien Fey. Romana is alarmed to see real evidence that a live animal may have been sacrificed at the stones very recently, but is told by Professor Rumford that it’s probably just the work of an overenthusiastic local group of Druid recreationists. But it’s not just would-be Druids who are moving around the circle – Professor Rumford is convinced that the stones themselves are moving. The Doctor and K-9 witness this for themselves, as an unknown force uses an apparition of the Doctor to lure Romana over the edge of a cliff. The stakes are higher now than anything that the Druid afficionados could imagine – one of the galaxy’s most feared criminals is hiding out on Earth, using the rock-like Ogri to enforce her will…and hide her identity.

Movie Stargate

Stargate

StargateIn 1927, a young girl named Catherine Langford visits an archaeological expedition overseen by her father. She is intrigued by a necklace bearing the eye of Ra, but soon is caught up in the much larger discovery – a set of cover stones, and an enormous metal ring covered in previously unseen symbols. Decades later, Catherine contacts Daniel Jackson, an archaeologist whose contention that the Great Pyramid was not built by the Fourth Dynasty has discredited him in academic circles. She offers him a translation job and a chance to prove his theories. At the same time, a pair of Air Force officers inform retired Colonel Jack O’Neil, distraught since the accidental death of his young son, that he has been reactivated.

Daniel arrives at an underground military base in Colorado. Catherine introducers him to a team that has been trying to translate the cover stones found in Giza. Daniel corrects the partial translation of the outer ring, which mentions Ra and something called a Stargate. But the inner set of symbols is like nothing he’s seen before. O’Neil enters the room and announces that the project is now under his supervision, much to Catherine’s surprise. After two weeks, Daniel is no closer to translating the other symbols, until a glance at a newspaper photo suggests that everyone has been looking down the wrong path from the start.

General West and other Air Force officials convene to hear Daniel’s explanation, although the general appears skeptical – Catherine’s team has been working on this for two years with no success. Daniel explains that the symbols refer to star constellations, which in turn are used as coordinates to plot a course through space. The first six symbols identify a point in space. The seventh identifies a point of origin that connects with the destination. That’s not too far off from the team’s theory, as Daniel learns when West orders that he be shown the device – the ring that was discovered with the cover stones in Giza. It is actually a dial with a rotating inner ring, covered in symbols. The inner ring can be turned to encode the chevrons on the outer ring, but the Air Force had been unable to identify the seventh symbol to complete the dialing process. Daniel recognizes one of the symbols on the dial as resembling the seventh symbol on the cover stones. This time the dialing process is complete. With a burst of energy, the device – the Stargate – opens a wormhole through space. A remote probe sent through the shimmering portal confirms the existence of a parallel Stargate on a world in another galaxy.

The probe also reveals that the other Stargate has a different set of symbols than the one on Earth. West thinks this nixes any chance of sending a reconnaissance team through the gate, since there would be no way to bring the team back. But Daniel is convinced that he can translate the stones on the other side and reopen the gate, so West authorizes him to join O’Neil’s team. Catherine offers him the necklace she found in Giza as a good luck token. With a bit of trepidation, he walks through the open gate and dematerializes. He reappears, slightly disoriented, inside a pyramid on the planet Abydos. But he finds no corresponding cover stones – without which, he can not figure out the combination for Earth. The officers on the recon team are considerably less than thrilled at this news and accuse Daniel of lying to them. Daniel insists that with a little exploration, they’ll find the information they need.

When a domesticated animal called a mastidge appears, Daniel gets his opportunity for exploration – the creature drags him through the desert to a group of peasant laborers from the city of Nagada. Daniel can not quite make out their spoken language, and they have no form of written communication. But his necklace convinces the group’s leader that he is a representative of Ra, so they escort him, O’Neil, and two other soldiers to Nagada for a welcoming feast. Daniel’s attempts to communicate prove fruitless, especially when he tries to use the sand to show the people the symbol that represents Earth. A sandstorm traps the visitors in the city. Kasuf, the peasants’ leader, offers his daughter Sha’uri to Daniel, while a young boy named Skaara begins to emulate O’Neil. Daniel refuses Sha’uri’s hesitant advances, but is able to achieve a rapport with her. She indicates that she knows where the symbol Daniel has drawn can be found, and brings him to an underground complex of tunnels covered in glyphs. Daniel realizes that the Nagadans’ language is similar to that of ancient Egypt, but the pronunciations differ from what he has known. Sha’uri quickly teaches him the correct way of speaking, and they begin to communicate. The symbols on the wall, meanwhile, tell the history of Abydos.

Thousands of years ago, a dying alien discovered a world full of young life – Earth. The alien possessed the body of a boy and, calling himself Ra, ruled Egypt. He used the Stargate to bring humans to Abydos in order to mine the mineral that comprised the gate. When his subjects on Earth rebelled and overthrew him, Ra retreated through the Stargate to Abydos, and forbade his subjects there from reading or writing. Eventually, the gate on Earth was buried.

In the present, O’Neil and the other officers join Daniel in the tunnels. Lieutenant Kowalksy finds a stone with the coordinates for Earth, but the symbol for the point of origin is still missing. Worse, when the group returns to the pyramid, they find the officers who had been left at base camp missing and soon come under attack by warriors with elaborate headdresses and staffs that fire some kind of energy projectile. O’Neil rushes to the gate room, looking for a particular piece of equipment he brought with him, but finds the case in question empty. The team is soon captured, and Daniel and O’Neil are brought before Ra himself. Ra wonders why they have come, especially bearing powerful weapons. He shows them an atomic bomb his troops found in the pyramid, which surprises Daniel but not O’Neil. The colonel attempts to steal a weapon and escape, but in the ensuing fight, Daniel is shot and killed.

O’Neil is thrown into a cell with the other surviving officers. Ra uses his sarcophagus to repair and revive Daniel. He is concerned that the necklace might have some of his followers confused. So he intends to demonstrate that he is the one true ruler by ordering Daniel to shoot the officers in front of the Nagadans. If Daniel refuses, Ra will kill them anyway – along with everyone who has ever seen them. And then Ra will send the bomb back through the gate, amplified with enough of the alien mineral to multiply its devastation considerably.

At the assembly, Skaara signals to Daniel that he and his fellow youths are armed. Daniel stages a diversion that allows most of them to escape, and during the celebration of their victory he is able to figure out the seventh symbol. They can dial the Stargate and go home. But before they can, they have to stop Ra from doing it first.

Z’Ha’Dum

Babylon 5Sheridan is stunned by his wife’s unexpected arrival, and even Delenn is at a loss to explain her presence. Franklin’s tests confirm that Anna is who she claims to be, even down to the DNA level, though a curious feature is later detected at the base of her skull. Anna insists that Sheridan come to Z’Ha’Dum with her to hear the Shadows’ side of the story, claiming that their intentions are benign. Skeptical, Sheridan agrees to go with her in the White Star. He also makes other arrangements in private with Garibaldi, including the transfer of two thermonuclear devices – smuggled in by G’Kar for use in the war – to the White Star. Londo receives a summons to report to the Royal Court on Centauri Prime – a promotion he’s hoping to avoid – and then receives a warning from an unidentified man to leave the station at once.

Anna reveals that the mission of the Icarus to Z’Ha’Dum – the doomed flight on which her husband assumed she had died – was no coincidence; the dormant Shadow vessel excavated on Mars was Earth’s first clue to the existence of the ancient race, and the shady Interplanetary Expeditions corporation tracked the ship and the Shadow that rescued it back to Z’Ha’Dum. On the planet, Sheridan is confronted by an old man named Justin, and a face he has seen before – Morden. Together, they try to convince Sheridan that the Shadows try to keep younger races in conflict for their own good, to force stronger results via evolution in adverse conditions, whereas the Vorlons attempt to keep the peace and allow evolution to take its course, resulting in weaker races. As a fleet of Shadow vessels appears and surrounds Babylon 5, Morden offers a choice – Sheridan can take the enemy’s side or all that he values will be wiped out. Sheridan, however, refuses to play with the deck dealt to him, and fights his way to the heart of the Shadows’ domain on Z’Ha’Dum. Cornered by the Shadow-influenced Anna and the Shadows themselves, Sheridan summons the White Star to take a death dive right into his location. Urged by the voice of Kosh, Sheridan leaps off a high balcony into a huge pit, as the White Star slams into Z’Ha’Dum with its nuclear payload, destroying the Shadows’ base of operations.

The Shadow ships threatening the station leave when they realize they are urgently needed elsewhere, but they snag a hostage before they go – a Starfury piloted by Garibaldi.
