The Blue And The Green – Part 5: The Swarming Season

Tomorrow PeopleGiving the police the slip, Chris returns to the Tomorrow People’s hideout to tell Stephen and Elizabeth that John has vanished without a trace. Violence on Earth reaches crisis proportions; bearers of blue and green badges are splitting off into violent tribes. War seems inevitable. Aboard a hidden spaceship, John learns from Robert that the badges and the pictures are all part of a plan to harvest the psychic energy of the human race as it goes mad to help incubate the next generation of Robert’s people. Is there a way for these aliens and the people of Earth to live, or must one species die off?

Man From Atlantis

Man From AtlantisAn adult, seemingly human, male washes up on the beach among seaweed and other flotsam after a storm, and is rushed to a nearby hospital, where his oddly mottled skin, webbed hands and feet, unusual eyes, and especially his apparent inability to breathe pure oxygen have emergency doctors stymied. Dr. Elizabeth Merrill of the Foundation for Oceanic Research notes the man’s unusual conditions are more akin to sea life than life on land, and suggests returning him to the ocean. Once in the water, his health is restored. A fascinated Dr. Merrill continues to study him, finding that while he tires quickly on land, he has enormous strength under the water, and can dive to depths of tens of thousands of feet. He can also, with intense concentration, exert his willpower onto human beings. She concludes, not entirely jokingly, that he may be the last citizen of the lost underwater civilization of Atlantis.

But when the Navy catches wind of Dr. Merrill’s research, a Navy Admiral begins hatching plans for the unusual man from the sea – given the nondescript human name Mark Harris – to take on hazardous undersea bomb and mine disposal tasks. Mark only reluctantly agrees, but during his first big mission, to locate the wreckage of the lost research submarine Seaquest, he swims to depths unsurvivable by human divers and sees a perfectly intact futuristic sub. Mark boards the sub and returns with it to an undersea mountain base, commanded by Mr. Schubert, a rich ocean salvage man who is using his wealth and various found pieces of secret equipment to plot the end of 20th century civilization…after which he will, naturally, emerge as the new ruler of mankind, promising peace and prosperity (but no free will) to his hand-picked community of scientists. Even an outsider to human society like Mark Harris realizes that Schubert must be stopped at any cost.

Man From AtlantisNotes: Scenes from the pilot movie were filmed aboard the U.S. Navy dive ship Elk River IX-501. Executive producers Herbert F. Solow and Robert Justman were veterans of the original Star Trek series, though Solow was now working under his own banner, Solow Productions, at this point, since Desilu had long since transformed into Paramount Pictures’ TV division. This was the first of four feature-length TV movies-of-the-week introducing the Man From Atlantis characters and concept; the ratings success of these movies would guarantee the concept an additional, but brief, single season of hour-long episodes in the 1977-78 prime time season.

Man From AtlantisAt roughly the same time as the initial movie aired, NBC (the network home of Man From Atlantis) was also airing the short-lived fantasy series The Fantastic Journey, which involved an island that may or may not have been Atlantis. This was more of a coincidence than anything: “unexplained paranormal phemomena” were all the rage in the 1970s, whether the lost city of Atlantis, ESP/telepathy, UFO sightings, or stories of crystals vibrating with energy. That the missing research vessel was named Seaquest – same as the advanced sub from the 1990s NBC series of the same name – is also a coincidence, though those wishing to connect some unlikely dots in fan fiction are welcome to do so.

Alien Worlds Season 1

The Keeper Of Eight – Part 1

Alien WorldsConducting experiments with hydrogen plasma in two small, self-contained space station labs positioned safely away from Starlab, Maura and physicist Dr. Paul Kramer are startled when a large, bat-like, jet-black spacecraft approaches them. Kramer’s lab pod is destroyed, while Maura is caught outside in the middle of a spacewalk. Examining a new ISA vehicle, the Solaris, Graydon and Buddy receive the distress signal and set out in the Solaris to help. Maura is found barely alive inside the hydrogren tank in her lab pod – a tank with no opening large enough for a human being to enter. As she tries to find out what happened to her, a non-corporeal being of pure energy named Echo appears, revealing that it transported her inside the tank to save her life. As for the black spacecraft, its occupants, the Draconians, want more hydrogen…and they’re planning to steal it from Earth’s atmosphere.

Season 1 Xena: Warrior Princess

The Prodigal

Xena: Warrior PrincessWhile traveling, Xena and Gabrielle encounter a giant wall of rocks. But before they can find another way to go, they are ambushed by highwaymen. As part of their ambush, the men have a large cart loaded down with logs that they will send at their victims. When the cart starts for the two friends, Gabrielle freezes and Xena has to knock her off of her feet. Seeing that the women managed to avoid their trap, the highwaymen run off. Gabrielle is bothered by the fact that she froze. She decides it’s best that she leave Xena or else face the possibility that she could get her friend hurt or killed. So she gathers her belongings and heads for home. On her way to Poteidaia, Gabrielle learns that the warlord Damon is in the area. She rushes to the village to warn her friends and family, but when she arrives the place is deserted. The people have all gathered in the tavern, waiting for the warrior Meleager to arrive. When he does, he’s drunk and passes out on the floor. Since she has been traveling with Xena, the townspeople expect Gabrielle and her sister Lila to take care of Meleager. Gabrielle is annoyed about that. And to add to her frustrations, her sister is jealous of her friendship with Xena.

Later, the villagers again gather at the tavern, while Meleager gives them advice on things they can use as weapons. Lila begins to fight with her sister, and the two only stop when they spot Damon’s scouts outside the village. Back in the tavern, the warrior has started drinking again and won’t be able help. But Gabrielle decides to rig him up and shouts out a warning to the scouts about Meleager and they retreat. When the warrior finally regains conciousness, he tells Gabrielle about his problems and she realizes that he lost his nerve. But she tells him that the town needs his help and that he can’t have any more wine until the job of getting rid of Damon is finished. Damon is surprised by the news of Meleager being in the area. He decides to see if he can convince the great warrior to join him and sends out men to capture him. Gabrielle, Meleager, and Lila head out to the woods surrounding Poteidaia to make plans for ambushing Damon and his army. The trio seperate to check things out. Lila is still jealous and starts to argues with her sister again. Gabrielle trys to work things out, and finally admits that she’s home for good. Suddenly they hear Meleager shout, and when they go to look for him, Gabrielle realizes that he has been kidnapped. She sends Lila back to the village to keep the people from becoming alarmed, while she heads off to Damon’s camp.

Damon makes his offer to Meleager, but before the warrior can accept, Gabrielle is dragged into the camp. Meleager says he’ll consider if he’s left alone with the bard. The two figure out a way to sneak out of the camp and return to Poteidaia. Under Meleager and Gabrielle’s direction, the villagers began to prepare traps for Damon’s army. But the warrior has realized that it probably won’t be enough. When the alarm is sounded the next morning, he is nowhere to be found. The townspeople are prepared to surrender, when Lila says that they don’t need Meleager, they have Gabrielle. The bard manages to rally the villagers and they prepare for Damon’s arrival. The traps work fairly well in slowing down the army, but when Damon himself arrives they regroup. Before they are able to start another attack, a javelin is thrown, spearing several soldiers in the process.

Letters From Pegasus

Stargate AtlantisMcKay concocts a plan to send a message through the stargate back to Earth, warning them of the Wraith approach to Atlantis and relaying all that the team has found in the city to date – all in 1.3 seconds, thanks to data compression. Despite Major Sheppard’s objections, Dr. Weir gives McKay’s plan the go-ahead. While he continues his plans, Weir sends Sheppard and Teyla to warn Teyla’s people about the coming of the Wraith. Teyla promises to save some refugees from a predetermined meeting point in the event of a Wraith attack, again despite Sheppard’s objections. After the warning is delivered, the Wraith arrive, harvesting defenseless people by the hundreds. Teyla and Sheppard have to leave their ship cloaked on the surface to avoid detection, as the Wraith have the stargate occupied. Trapped, unable to offer assistance without giving away their own presence, they bear witness to the slaughter of hundreds. And on Atlantis, it becomes apparent that there may be enough time left from McKay’s highly-compressed message to send brief personal video messages home from each of the crew.

Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down

Battlestar GalacticaBaltar announces that his Cylon detector is functional, and President Roslin and Commander Adama discuss who should be the first to submit to testing. They both agree that those in sensitive positions should be first, but Roslin – after the Cylon clone interrogated by Starbuck planted the seed of suspicion – is keen to test Adama first. Roslin’s chief of staff, who has been flirting with Galactica bridge officer Dualla for weeks, gets Dualla to admit that Adama has recently made several untraceable calls. And when a single Cylon ship appears near Galactica, attacking and evading erratically, Adama isn’t on the bridge – in fact, he isn’t on the ship at all, having taken a Raptor to another Colonial ship without filing a flight plan. Adama returns during the attack, with a passenger aboard – Ellen Tigh, Colonel Tigh’s wife, who was assumed dead in the attack on Caprica. But the story of how she survived raises suspicions that she, too, may be a Cylon – and for once, Adama hopes that’s the case.
