Atonement

Babylon 5A Minbari ship arrives at B5 while Zack needles Minbari tailors about adjusting Garibaldi’s uniform for him (and receives a needling in kind). Callenn, a new Minbari arrival, has come to take Delenn back to her home world to undergo the Dreaming, a ceremony which reveals a pivotal moment of a person’s past, a glimpse at their soul. Delenn is reluctant to reveal to Sheridan that the results of the Dreaming may require her to stay on Minbar forever. Sheridan sends Franklin and Marcus to Mars to establish contact with the Martian resistance, in an effort to gain more support to return the Earth Alliance to order. On Minbari, Delenn, with Lennier as her guide, enters the Dreaming, reliving her first meeting with the Grey Council and Dukhat, her induction into the Council after Dukhat’s tutelage, and her mentor’s death during the first contact between Minbari and humans. But Delenn also remembers the horrible truth – that her anguished cry for vengeance upon Dukhat’s death was the deciding vote that led her people into a war with the humans. With her caste looking for anything to discredit her, how can Delenn’s reputation withstand the blood of millions on her hands?

Racing Mars

Babylon 5Sheridan, having seen ISN run Garibaldi’s incriminating interview again and again, decides to take the matter up with Garibaldi personally. The discussion turns into an argument and then comes to blows, and Sheridan threatens to have his former security chief put off the station – or worse. A shady character named Wade introduces himself to Garibaldi, trying to convince him that Sherdian needs to be stopped, but despite his argument with the captain, Garibaldi doesn’t feel the need to sell anyone out. On Mars, Franklin and Marcus have suffered through a long journey with their curious fellow passenger Captain Jack, who turns out to be their contact with the resistance. However, when they try to open discussions with the leaders of the Mars resistance, it seems that someone has tampered with their identification. They discover that the turncoat is the forgetful Captain Jack, but he isn’t acting of his own volition. And after another altercation with Sheridan, Garibaldi decides that it may be time for him to switch sides after all.

Lines of Communication

Babylon 5Delenn is alarmed by the arrival of an emissary from Minbar who warns her of impending civil war on her home world. She sets out on a journey back home to try to quell the impending conflict. With all supply lines to the station cut off, and ISN broadcasting the official propoganda line that Babylon 5 is the staging ground for the subversion of Earth, Sheridan tries to come up with a way to fight the hail of lies being fed to the general populace. His answer is to revamp the war room into a broadcast studio and begin transmitting the “Voice of the Resistance” from there with your host, the very reluctant (and tired) Susan Ivanova. Terrorist attacks on Mars create a tense situation for Franklin, who is trying to enlist the help of the rebels on Mars – but not if they continue to use those tactics. Delenn discovers that the Minbari emissary Forell has sold out to a race called the Drakh, who have their own plans for Minbar. And Delenn is sure that there is a connection between the Drakh and the Shadows.

Conflicts of Interest

Babylon 5Preparations are under way for the first “Voice of the Resistance” broadcast from B5, but the one thing no one has been able to figure out is how to get the signal from the station to anywhere outside of the sector. Franklin, having just returned from Mars, suggests using the almost limitless power at Draal’s disposal on Epsilon 3. In response to his recent arguments with Garibaldi, and sensing that the security chief will not be returning to take back his job, Sheridan orders Zack to confiscate Garibaldi’s sidearm, identicard and link. Zack reluctantly carries out his orders, unaware that Garibaldi keeps a spare identicard. Wade, who earlier urged Garibaldi to betray Sheridan, enlists Garibaldi’s help to get an unspecified visitor through station security – and the visitor turns out to be Lise Hampton, Garibaldi’s ex-girlfriend, with a mysterious cargo in her possession. Garibaldi skirts his own security teams to get Lise through customs, but the result is a vicious firefight and promise from Sheridan that he’ll be put off the station if he is involved in any more trouble. And Ivanova finally kicks off her first newscast with the help of the family of an old friend.

Rumors, Bargains and Lies

Babylon 5Londo and G’Kar are persuaded by Sheridan to permit the White Star fleet to patrol their borders. Fearing that the leaders of the non-aligned worlds will balk at the idea of his fleet flying along their territory, Sheridan concocts a convoluted scheme to hint at suspicious happenings along the aliens’ borders but withholding his help until it is requested. En route to Minbar to deal with political upheavals that have finally erupted into civil war, Delenn vows to end the conflict single-handedly. She believes that her disbanding the Grey Council has left Minbar without leadership, and the resulting conflicts are her fault. Neroon of the warrior caste meets with her, and despite his past disagreements with her, he agrees with Delenn that they will reach an amicable solution which will not require either of their castes to surrender. But Delenn’s own religious caste followers believe that her private meetings with Neroon will result in a betrayal of her own people, and plan to ritually sacrifice themselves and anyone else on board to prevent it. And on the station, Sheridan’s cunning plan could backfire unless he stoops just low enough to plant some the right information in the right places. Neroon, departing to return to his fellow warriors, intends to make sure than Delenn’s peace plan backfires.

Moments of Transition

Babylon 5On Minbar, the warrior caste stoops to treacherous new lows as Delenn receives the news that Shakiri, the warrior leader, will openly attack the capitol of Minbar and its population unless the religious caste offers its immedaite surrender. On B5, Lyta finds herself at a disadvantage since she has gone on the run from Psi Corps. Potential clients who need a telepath to perform even the most routine duties will not accept the services of a known renegade. Psi Cop Bester happens to be on the station, and offers Lyta the renewal of her Psi Corps certification if she will agree to have her Vorlon-enhanced body turned over to Bester upon her death. Lyta refuses to sign such a contract, but she is left with little alternative. The room she occupied during the height of the war is too expensive for her, a visit to Garibaldi seeking work almost but doesn’t quite work due to the insistent disapproval of Garibaldi’s new employer, William Edgars of Mars, and the only other offer of work she gets is from Zack, who wants the evasive former security chief scanned without permission. Lyta must now reluctantly return to the Psi Corps, Delenn must surrender and risk being killed as a symbol of her caste’s strength, and forces under the control of Earth President Clark engage in a killing spree which incites Sheridan to declare war on Earth.

When the blockade threatens to starve out the residents of Proxima 3, Sheridan hurriedly asks the League of Non-Aligned Worlds to support Babylon 5 instead of Earth and then sets out to attack the flotilla of Earth Force destroyers at Proxima 3. Londo tries to persuade G’Kar to sign a declaration announcing joint Narn-Centauri support of Sheridan’s fight to win Earth back from President Clark’s regime, but G’Kar withholds his cooperation until the last minute. The Exercise of Vital Powers

Babylon 5Garibaldi returns to Mars to meet his new employer, pharmaceutical baron William Edgars. Lise is worried about Garibaldi’s presence on Mars, but his business is with Edgars. Edgars subjects Garibaldi to an unexpected loyalty screening using a telepath, making Garibaldi even edgier about his new boss. On the station, Franklin is racing the clock to revive the telepaths victimized by Shadow technology, but can’t seem to break through the Shadows’ defense systems until Lyta visits medlab and scans one of the victims, reviving him harmlessly for a short while. Having passed Edgars’ test, Garibaldi is finally let in on the big secret – Edgars wants to keep the Psi Corps from taking control of Earth Alliance, and he fears that Sheridan’s open rebellion against Earth will force the president to give Psi Corps free reign, creating a permanent police state. Garibaldi’s assignment is to trap Sheridan by any means necessary – and Garibaldi’s proposed means of accomplishing this is to take Sheridan’s father hostage.

The Face of the Enemy

Babylon 5More and more Earth ships switch sides to join Sheridan’s fleet, including his old command, the Agammemnon. While visiting his old ship, Sheridan receives a call from Garibaldi, a warning that Sheridan’s father has been seized and taken into custody, and an offer of help. Against the advice of Ivanova, his former first officer on the Agammemnon, and probably even his own common sense, Sheridan agrees to Garibaldi’s terms to come to Mars, alone, only to find that it’s a trap. Sheridan is captured and brutalized by Earth Force, and in exchange for this demonstration of reliability, Edgars tells Garibaldi the whole truth – he’s not trying to keep the Psi Corps from gaining power, he’s trying to ensure the extinction of all telepaths. Even though Garibaldi agrees to help Edgars, he himself has unwittingly been gathering intelligence for Bester and the Corps. And perhaps worst of all, Bester reminds Garibaldi of something he’s forgotten.

Intersections In Real Time

Babylon 5Sheridan’s interrogation begins, conducted by a man named William who has the options to call in guards, inflict pain through Narn pain-givers Sheridan is forced to wear, or otherwise use whatever means are necessary to break the captain and force a confession that his secession of Babylon 5 from Earth was committed under alien influence. William begins to disorient Sheridan’s concepts of time and truth and trust…or perhaps not.

After being fed a poisoned sandwich and vague information about his father, Sheridan resists William’s psychological attacks, and persuades a Drazi hostage not to assist the interrogator even if it almost certainly signs the Drazi’s death sentence…or perhaps not.

William wants Sheridan to put his signature on the confession, but when Sheridan resists the state’s attempts to break him, he finds out that the entire interrogation could be nothing more than a maddening show designed to drive him out of his mind.

Or perhaps not.

Between The Darkness And The Light

Babylon 5As Sheridan’s interrogation continues, Garibaldi makes his way to the Mars resistance base, trying to convince them that contrary to the ISN reports, he was brainwashed by Bester into betraying the resistance and handing Sheridan over to the authorities. But with tensions running high among the rebels, they simply take Garibaldi hostage until Lyta scans him, proving that his claims about mind alteration are true. Garibaldi, Franklin and Lyta slip into the facility where Sheridan is being held, and Garibaldi uses his newfound popularity among Earthforce loyalists to gain access to the captain, though force is needed to break him out. Meanwhile, Susan has taken Sheridan’s place at the head of the swelling resistance fleet, but finds that her plans for a massive strike on Mars have been discovered by Earthforce. But with some of her support fleet already too close to Mars to abort the mission, Susan proceeds with the attack, and finds out that Earthforce has a new class of destroyer which integrates Earth and Shadow technology. Her fleet succeeds against the overwhelming odds, but Ivanova pays dearly for the victory, leaving Sheridan to resume his command of the resistance fleet.

Endgame

Babylon 5A resistance strike team on Mars, working with Franklin, Lyta and Garibaldi, slip the Shadow-altered telepaths aboard a fleet of thirty Earthforce destroyers which have been ordered to head off the inevitable attack from Sheridan. The fleet is being commanded by General Lefcourt, Sheridan’s tactical instructor from the academy, and he assumes that his old pupil will emerge from hyperspace, which he does – but at that moment, Lyta signals the telepaths to awaken and interface with the computers aboard the destroyers, effectively shutting the fleet down. Sheridan’s fleet quickly jumps to Earth to liberate the planet from the reign of President Clark, who will destroy Earth if he cannot rule it himself. And before the crucial battle at Earth, Marcus slips away from Sheridan’s fleet to perform his final duty aboard Babylon 5.

Notes: Bloopers are exceedingly rare in Babylon 5, but according to this episode’s visual effects, unless Sheridan’s battle at Earth took several hours (which doesn’t seem to be the case), it was daylight on both hemispheres! When Sheridan’s fleet arrives, it’s daylight over the Indian and African continents. But very near the end of the battle, which only takes several minutes onscreen, the sun is shining on the familiar outline of the United States. The visuals don’t seem to support artificial sunlight either. Oops!

Rising Star

Babylon 5Having liberated Earth, Sheridan hands himself over to Earthforce authorities, now under the command of acting President Luchenko of the Russian Consortium. But the new President isn’t the only person wanting to have a word with him – Bester and more than a few right-wing generals are lined up to take Sheridan’s head off at the first opportunity, but Luchenko offers him the opportunity to resign his Earthforce commission and grant his allies amnesty from any further prosecution. On Babylon 5, Susan is out of danger from the injuries she suffered in the attack by the Shadow-based Earth destroyers, but suffers from a raging guilt that her recovery came at the expense of Marcus’ life. Delenn assembles the League on Non-Aligned Worlds one last time, to ask them to dissolve that entity in favor of a new Interstellar Alliance which would hold all of the involved worlds as equal. Her next task is to go to Earth to convince the new President to join the alliance, provided that the new Earth government is willing to grant independence to colonies such as Mars, where Garibaldi is trying to free Lise from the Martian Mafia. Also free is Sheridan’s father, who meets his future daughter-in-law when Delenn arrives on Earth. What remains to be seen, after the wedding of Sheridan and Delenn, is if Earth will accept him as the first president of the new Interstellar Alliance.

In The Beginning

Babylon 5The year is 2245. The Earth Alliance, still swaggering from its victory over the Dilgar, prepares to expand its sphere of influence. The Minbari Grey Council seeks to verify the truth of prophecy on a distant world called Z’ha’dum. A chance meeting of the two expeditions ends in disaster, when misunderstandings escalate into open battle and the Minbari leader, Dukhat, is killed. So begins a holy war that changes the shape of the galaxy’s future, and its past.

Delenn, the newest member of the Grey Council, must find a way to fulfill Dukhat’s last request, which goes against the wishes of her entire race – and she is uncertain of the mysterious involvement of a pair of Vorlons. Dr. Stephen Franklin must choose between loyalty to Earth and loyalty to his conscience. Earth turns to the Centauri Republic and Narn Regime for aid, but the animosity between those two races may doom its only chance for survival. As the Alliance faces annihilation, the last desperate act of a lone pilot may be all that stands between humanity and the abyss…and the beginning of the galaxy’s last, best hope for peace.
