Season 2 Witchblade

Veritas

WitchbladeTwo armed men ruthlessly hunt down a middle-aged man, catching up with him just after he reads a series of numbers over a cell phone and killing him. But this killing is out of the ordinary in many ways – the victim, William Ticknor, is a former intelligence expert for the U.S. government, and the last person he called, the person to whom he read the numbers, turns out to be Gabriel Bowman, Pezzini’s internet entrepreneur friend who specializes in objects of mystical significance. Pezzini, having recently had a cryptic conversation with the spirit of President Kennedy, is already aware that this case may be deeper and darker than even her partners suspect. Gabriel knew Ticknor, and had a business arrangement with him, but didn’t know exactly what Ticknor would be bringing him. He deciphers the numbers – exact latitude and longitude – and meets Pezzini there, only to find that it’s the exact spot where Ticknor was gunned down. Pezzini finds something taped to the bottom of a park bench, but soon she and Gabriel are being pursued by the same killers who murdered Ticknor. She kills one of them and then goes into hiding with Gabriel. Ticknor’s mystery package is a roll of undeveloped 8mm film of a kind that hasn’t been made for over 20 years, but Pezzini can’t show her face long enough to get it developed – she and Gabriel are wanted by the FBI for the murder of a federal agent. In the meantime, Danny Woo is trying to help Sara stay underground, but he’s growing increasingly suspicious of Jake McCarty’s cozy relationship with the FBI agents working the case.

Guest Cast: Victor Slezak (William Ticknor), Kathryn Winslow (Vicki), Jeff Seymour (Agent Arness), John Bourgeois (President John F. Kennedy), Dean Hagopian (Agent Terrell), Sam Moses (Agent Spector), Patrick Garrow (Vic), and Lazar

Notes: Elements of this episode are based upon former New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison’s theory on motives that the U.S. intelligence community might have had for killing President Kennedy in 1963; these theories were later turned into a movie, Oliver Stone’s JFK, but are best summed up in Garrison’s own book, On The Trail Of The Assassins (1988). Garrison’s theory, however, overlooks the role of Vorschlaag Industries in the Kennedy assassination…

Parabola

WitchbladeA spree of hate crimes is followed by another spree – the bloody deaths of the perpetrators of those crimes. The sole survivor of a gay bashing tells Pezzini of a woman who saved his live, but she’s skeptical. She’s also skeptical of the tales of a crime lord named Lupo – specializing in hate crimes. Danny learns about a hate rally, and Pez decides to infiltrate it, but her attempt to bluff her way past Lupo’s guards ends in disaster – and the only thing that saves her life is the same vigilante who brought the gay bashing incident to a bloody end. The girl shows up at Pezzini’s door later, asking for use of the Witchblade, but curiously declining Pez’s offer of help in bringing Lupo to justice. The girl’s grudge with Lupo is personal, fatal…and far older than Pezzini can imagine.

Palindrome

WitchbladeA man turns up dead, beaten to death by blunt force, and Pezzini, Danny and McCarty uncover evidence of a secret fight club whose fighters are recruited mainly from one of the dockyards. Danny and McCarty manage to get jobs at the docks and stage a fight between themselves to attract the attention of one of the club’s recruiters. They’re inducted into the club, with Pezzini following to keep an eye on them, but she also sees someone else she feels an inexplicable affinity for – another fighter who goes by the name of Conchobar. Pezzini can’t explain why she’s drawn to the circumspect Irishman, nor can she explain her visions of being romanced by him – or witnessing his death. Nor can she explain why Conchobar seems equally attracted to her – or why he claims to know who she is, and has seen the same visions she has.

Ubique

WitchbladePezzini awakens from a nightmare about dying at the hands of a younger woman wielding the Witchblade, but when she awakens, she discovers that the bracelet truly is gone from her wrist. At the same time, it seems that a blood-dimmed tide is loosed upon the world as a relentless global wave of unusual murders begins. Without the Witchblade to help her see past the barrier of death, Pezzini is helpless to get to the heart of these crimes. She still manages to find one amazing coincidence, however – every one of the murderers recently visited a web site called “CyberFaust” just before the killing spree began. But when Pezzini, Danny and McCarty view the site at the precinct, it delivers the message that Pezzini is responsible for the murder of Kenneth Irons. Pezzini and Gabriel look at the site, and discover that Irons is very much alive – and he is responsible for both the wave of deaths and the woman who now wields the Witchblade in the name of vengeance.

Notes: Continuing the series’ long-running fascination with classic rock music, the Witchblade finally gains her own voice here, and fittingly enough it speaks in the voice of Jefferson Airplane vocalist Grace Slick. …ish

Doctor Who: ...ishThe Doctor and Peri pay a visit to a linguistic symposium in the future, to which the Doctor, legendary for his own viurtuoso verbosity, has a personal invitation. But things begin going horribly wrong soon after the TARDIS lands. Professor Osefer, an old friend of the Doctor who is due to deliver a keynote speech, turns up dead – apparently by her own hand – though the Doctor is mystified by her unusually misspelled suicide note. The campus artificial intelligence, designed to offer its adaptable, ever-growing database to students and experts alike, begins exhibiting murderous tendencies. The Doctor learns that a young man who has caught Peri’s eye may be the most diabolically dangerous man on the planet. And then all of the attendees begin repeating one thing, a suffix without a prefix, a syllable with barely any meaning of its own, the calling card of a malevolent intelligence bent on universal domination: ish.

Shockwave – Part II

Star Trek: EnterpriseIn a staggering miscalculation, Daniels’ act of removing Archer from the timeline has had a resounding ripple effect on the future. Though Archer believes little of it, Daniels tells him that his absence will erase an organization called the United Federation of Planets from existence, dooming the future. Daniels begins to work feverishly to correct his mistake, but it will be difficult to send Archer back from a 31st century where Earth is in ruins and even electricity is a luxury beyond their reach.

Aboard the Enterprise, Silik and the other Suliban interrogate the crew, torturing T’Pol to learn the whereabouts of Captain Archer and holding the rest of the crew hostage. A delirious T’Pol receives an unusual message that appears to be from Archer, telling her that the key to retrieving him lies in Crewman Daniels’ sealed quarters. Hoshi, Reed, T’Pol and Trip launch an ambitious plan to retake the Enterprise – even if it means coming very close, perhaps too close, to destroying her.

The Train Job

FireflyRiver is plagued by bad dreams of her time at the Alliance academy, as well as bouts of seeming incoherence where she mutters about men with hands of blue, coming two by two. Mal continues an annual tradition by getting into a bar fight with Alliance supporters on Unification Day, the celebration of the final defeat of the Independents. With that taken care of, the crew moves on to its real job, a train heist on behalf of Adlai Niska. Their employer leaves no doubt in Mal’s mind as to what he does to people who fail to meet his expectations. Mal and Zoe ride the train and discover that a number of Alliance troops are on board, which only makes the job more appealing for him. Jayne breaks into the train from above, with the plan being for Serenity to haul the cargo and the three of them up. When one of the troops gets the jump on them, Jayne calls for an early pull-up, leaving Mal and Zoe behind. They blend back in with the other passengers, all of whom are held for questioning at the train’s next stop. Jayne wants to proceed to the rendezvous point immediately, while the rest of the crew tries to figure out a way to save Mal and Zoe first. Even if their cunning plan succeeds, questioning from the local sheriff is enough to give Mal second thoughts about completing the deal.

Carbon Creek

Star Trek: EnterpriseOn the one-year anniversary of T’Pol’s assignment to the Enterprise, Captain Archer holds a dinner in her honor, also attended by Trip. When pressed to reveal why her last leave on Earth included a visit to Carbon Creek, Pennsylvania, T’Pol shocks Archer and Trip by recounting a story of the first contact between humans and Vulcans – a story which predates and completely contradicts the well-known and established historical accounts of Zefram Cochrane’s meeting with the Vulcans in the 21st century. And T’Pol has unusually intimate knowledge of the events that unfolded in Carbon Creek, for her own great-grandmother was one of three Vulcans who survived their ship’s crash-landing, forcing them to try to integrate into the small mining town until their distress signal was received by another Vulcan ship.

FireflyThe crew finds a derelict colony ship; Mal decides to check it out to look for survivors and potentially valuable loot. At first, the ship appears to be simply deserted, but when Mal and Zoey enter the cargo hold, they not only find the would-be settlers valuable supplies – they find their bodies as well. Mal recognizes the bodies as Reaver victims. They find a single survivor and bring him back to Serenity; Shepherd Book tries to lay the victims to rest while Kaylee works to bypass a booby trap that could destroy Serenity. All these chores take time, and before they can leave the derelict behind, an Alliance ship appears and boards them. The doctor and River hide outside Serenity, which unnerves him as much as it delights her. Test Of Nerve

Sarah Jane Smith: Test Of NerveAt her home, Sarah receives a package – a live rat in a glass cage, with a note attached. When Josh removes the note from the cage, a mechanism seals the cage completely and fills it with nerve gas, killing the rat. If that isn’t ominous enough, the note promises that the same will happen to all of London unless Sarah “finds the truth” in 24 hours. Sarah next gets a visit from James Carver, a man whose name has been in the news recently after being detained and questioned by police following a scuffle with a member of Parliament. Carver, seeming nervous and unstable, claims to have gotten hold of enough sarin gas to kill the entire population of London – and even shows real proof. He claims that he’ll release it in the London underground during rush hour if certain demands aren’t met by six in the morning. Natalie insists that Sarah call the police, but Sarah tries to make use of her contact within the C19 agency instead; shortly after confirming that Carver is dangerous and is in possession of the sarin capsules, Sarah’s contact is found dead and Sarah herself is framed for the murder. And while she’s in police custody, answering questions, Sarah’s losing precious time …and so is London.

Minefield

Star Trek: EnterpriseMalcolm gets a breakfast invitation from Captain Archer, but the security chief finds himself nervous the whole time. A call from the bridge saves Malcolm from the awkward situation, and then plunges him into a deadly one – the Enterprise strikes a mine which has somehow been cloaked, remaining invisible until it’s too late, causing major damage to the ship. A second mine adheres to the hull, giving the crew an opportunity to study it and learn how to detect other cloaked mines, but this one is still live and could blow at any moment, destroying the Enterprise. Archer orders the ship brought to a halt and Malcolm insists on going out on the hull to defuse the mine. When he tries, however, it springs an additional attachment to fasten itself even more tightly to the Enterprise and lances through Malcolm’s leg in the process. Archer suits up to help him, but while the captain is outside the ship, T’Pol has to deal with a new problem – the minelayers have returned, identifying themselves as Romulans and insisting that the Enterprise withdraw from their territory immediately or be destroyed.

It was mentioned in Balance Of Terror (1966) that no one in Starfleet had seen the face of a Romulan prior to that incident involving Kirk’s Enterprise, but no one mentioned whether or not the Romulans’ ships had been seen before.

But as he tries to maintain his composure and reassure Saffron that she shouldn’t take his negative feelings toward marriage personally, tension starts mounting aboard the ship. Jayne seems desperate to trade for Mal’s “prize,” Zoe is none too pleased with Saffron’s matrimonial example, and Inara is considerably tenser than usual. Archer reluctantly sends out a call to any nearby ships for aid, a message is received pointing the Enterprise toward a space station. The station is completely unmanned, and Archer has to barter with a computer for repairs. The repairs begin immediately once a price is agreed upon – in this case, warp plasma – and the work is not only performed with tremendous speed, but it’s up to or beyond Starfleet specifications. A remote probe even repairs Malcolm’s leg from the injury he sustained while trying to defuse a Romulan mine.
