Maelstrom

Battlestar GalacticaDisturbed by recurring nightmares about Leoben, the Cylon who held her captive on New Caprica, Starbuck visits an oracle, who unsettles her even further with a prediction that Leoben is coming to find her. After this encounter, Starbuck is reluctant to seek further help with her nightmares, even though Anders is willing to accompany her to see a psychiatrist. During fleet refueling operations, a routine recon flight becomes anything but when Starbuck spots a Cylon raider and pursues it, nearly getting herself killed in a storm in the planet’s atmosphere. But afterward, on Galactica, a review of her gun camera footage shows no Cylon ship, and both Starbuck and her superiors start to wonder if she’s fit to fly. Apollo, convinced that she’ll overcome her problems, puts her back in the pilot’s seat and even offers to be her wingman…but it could prove to be their last mission together.

The Son Also Rises

Battlestar GalacticaStill recovering from the apparent death of Starbuck, Adama and Apollo struggle to move directly from that tragedy into their preparations for the trial of Gaius Baltar. The Admiral is selected at random to head a panel of judges, and if necessary to serve as the tiebreaker. Apollo is assigned to be the bodyguard for Baltar’s new lawyer (his original attorney having died in a terrorist-style bombing), though he doesn’t take to his new job with much enthusiasm, accusing his father of yanking him from flight rotation due to his emotional state. Baltar’s new attorney doesn’t inspire much confidence either, initially telling President Roslin that he’s taking the case for the fame it will bring him. Another assassination attempt forces Apollo to look at the situation more seriously, and to reign in the lawyer’s eccentricities. The next attempt on his life comes much closer to the mark, and provides Apollo with the evidence that it’s an inside job.

Crossroads – Part 1

Battlestar GalacticaThe trial of Gaius Baltar begins, with Apollo aiding the defense, even as his father sits on the panel of five judges. Tensions are running high all around, even among those who are on the same side – President Roslin can’t find a lawyer who can guarantee that a genocide charge against Baltar will stick. But it seems that everyone has underestimated Baltar’s attorney, who argues that had Roslin been president when the Cylons attacked New Caprica, she would have led the remnants of humanity into a fight that they couldn’t hope to win. Two more admissions also weigh in Baltar’s favor – Tigh’s public (and drunken) admission that he put his own wife to death, and Roslin’s confession that she has returned to using kamala root extract. Apollo forces the second revelation, but Roslin quietly turns it against him again with a revelation of her own – her cancer has returned with a vengeance. And all the while, a number of people, from Tigh to Roslin’s aide, hear something strange – something coming from Galactica herself.

Crossroads – Part 2

Battlestar GalacticaAs Baltar’s trial continues, it quickly becomes apparent that some will say anything to convict him for betraying everyone on New Caprica, forcing a hasty reassessment of Lampkin’s defense strategy. Tigh, Tyrol, Sam Anders and presidential aide Tory Foster continue to hear mysterious music, though they each gradually become aware that they’re not alone. Lampkin puts Apollo on the stand, where he makes an impassioned plea that while Baltar may be guilty of something, it’s neither treason nor genocide. Baltar is acquitted of the charges and Admiral Adama orders the fleet to jump to the Ionian Nebula…where the entire fleet suddenly loses power. During the confusion, Baltar is whisked away, and the four people who have been hearing the maddening music are drawn together – and drawn to the inescapable conclusion that they are four of the missing Cylon models. Power is restored as this realization sets in, and a large fleet of Cylon ships is detected…but the four return to their duties. Despite having resigned his commission to join Baltar’s defense team, Apollo suits up and launches in a Viper, but when he peels away from the rest of his formation to investigate an unidentified blip on his screen, he finds that he’s not the only unexpected Viper pilot in the sky.

Notes: As with part one, this episode dispenses with the customary opening titles, instead running the names of the main cast and principal guest actors and crew over part of the story. The song “All Along The Watchtower” originally appeared on Bob Dylan’s 1967 John Wesley Harding album, and has since been covered by numerous artists, from Jimi Hendrix to U2. Why a song from Earth would seem to be a Cylon “trigger command” is a mystery left unsolved.

Razor

Battlestar GalacticaWhen she first boards the Battlestar Pegasus to begin her tour of duty, Lt. Kendra Shaw’s biggest worry is not incurring the legendary wrath of Admiral Cain. Her priorities change drastically when a massive Cylon attack leaves the ship heavily damaged: the armistice has been broken, and every Colonial world is being nuked into oblivion. With her computer network offline for a major refit, Pegasus is the only Colonial ship able to escape the carnage at the Scorpion shipyards. Cain orders Lt. Shaw to perform an uncalculated jump to random coordinates, because the incoming Cylon nukes mean that anywhere will soon be safer than Colonial space.

So far as they know, the crew of Pegasus are the last surviving members of the human race, aboard the sole surviving spacecraft. As they take stock and begin to repair the damage, Admiral Cain announces to her crew that they have a new mission: to take revenge on the Cylons. An early battle sees Pegasus critically outnumbered and outmaneuvered, and when her first officer refuses to act on her orders to keep up the hopeless fight, Cain shoots him through the head on the flight deck and orders the terrified Colonel Fisk to take his place or suffer the same fate. A Colonial networking expert with whom Cain had a relationship during the refit is revealed by Lt. Shaw to be a Cylon in human form; Cain orders her men to interrogate the woman, named Gina, with any means of coercion or degradation that they see fit.

When a small fleet of civilian ships is discovered, Cain orders her crew to board the ships and strip them of key supplies, equipment and capable personnel…and orders the rest left to die. Lt. Shaw and Colonel Fisk carry out those orders, and Cain shows her appreciation by promotion Shaw to captain. But Shaw can’t forget that her new rank pips have been paid for in the blood of others.

Ten months later, a meeting with another Colonial fleet led by Battlestar Galactica changes the crew of the Pegasus forever; in short order, Cain is killed (by her escaped former lover) and is replaced by Fisk (who is then murdered himself), and command then falls to Pegasus’ chief engineer, Garner, who perishes in a successful attempt to save the ship and her crew. Admiral Adama gives command of the troubled battlestar to his son, Lee “Apollo” Adama. When he reviews the records of the surviving senior officers of Pegasus, Apollo chooses Shaw to be his executive officer, hoping that the appointment will meet with the trust and approval of the rest of the ship’s crew. Their first major mission is a seemingly simple search-and-rescue assignment, to locate a mission raptor and its crew.

What they find instead, however, chills Admiral Adama: an outdated Cylon fleet, dating back to the first Cylon War. When Adama last encountered this kind of Cylon in the closing days of that war, he bore witness to grisly experiments that may have been the first steps in the creation of biological Cylons and their mysterious, ship-controlling Hybrids. Fearing that the missing raptor crew may be subjected to the same horrors by a group of outcast Cylons who think that first war still rages on, Adama transfers his flag to the Pegasus to personally oversee the risky rescue mission. Apollo assigns Shaw to come up with a daring rescue plan, and she’s surprised when her death-defying mission proposal is approved. But in her attempt to carry out her own orders, Shaw can’t decide if she should complete her mission or atone for her sins at last.

Notes: The “ancient” Cylons, and their ships, are strikingly similar to the Cylons and Cylon Raiders from the original Battlestar Galactica, complete with primitive synthesized voices. (The original series Cylons and their ships had already been hinted at in the pilot miniseries’ museum displays, as well as a seldom-glimpsed painting in Adama’s office aboard Galactica.) With the phrase “all of this has happened before, and all of this will happen again” once again coming to the fore, an interesting interpretation could be that the Cylon-Human conflict is a generational cycle that is loosely repeating itself, possibly meaning that the original Battlestar Galactica and the new series may be different epochs on the same timeline. (It should be pointed out that the above is, however, pure speculation.) The “present day” portions of Razor take place soon after the second season episode The Captain’s Hand. More of young Adama’s exploits during the first Cylon War were shown in a series of “mini-episodes” of “Razor flashbacks” aired during commercial breaks in the Sci-Fi Channel series Flash Gordon.

He That Believeth In Me

Battlestar GalacticaGalactica’s entire command crew is stunned into silence at the sound of Starbuck’s voice. Even though they’re still reeling from the realization that they are among the Cylons’ fabled final five, Tigh, Tyrol, Anders and Tory are shocked by the return of Starbuck. Starbuck helps Galactica in the fight against the Cylon base ships, but after a Cylon fighter scans Anders at close range, the fight is over and the Cylons inexplicably retreat. Aboard Galactica, Starbuck’s triumphant return is met with a very muted response. She claims that she’s only been gone for six hours, and can’t explain why two months have passed for the rest of the fleet. She also can’t explain, except in the vaguest of terms, how she got to Earth and then returned to the fleet. Roslin orders Starbuck locked up and kept under guard, certain that this isn’t the real Kara Thrace, but a Cylon trick. Below decks, in the aftermath of his trial, Baltar is whisked away to the safety of a commune of people who consider him to be their messiah, and he begins to falteringly pass on the Cylons’ monotheistic belief system to his new followers, urging them to turn their backs on the pantheon of gods worshipped by the Colonials. But even among friends (and at least a few fanatics), Baltar discovers that he isn’t completely safe. Starbuck tries to convince Adama that she does know the way to Earth, but can’t give him a concrete reason to trust her. She then sets out to convince Roslin instead – with a gun in her hand.

Six Of One

Battlestar GalacticaStarbuck, after getting President Roslin’s attention by holding her at gunpoint, hands the president that gun and tells her to fire if she truly thinks that Starbuck is a Cylon. Roslin does indeed fire, but she misses; Starbuck is arrested and thrown in the brig, where Adama makes it clear that even his trust in her has now been broken. But Roslin can’t help but feel that Adama’s belief in her absolute certainty that she alone knows the way to Earth is eroding. Among the Cylons, concern is growing about the recent attack on the Colonial fleet, and the abrupt, unplanned end to it. Number Six theorizes that some of the final five Cylon models could be among the fleet, which would prompt the Cylon Raider vehicles to avoid firing on them. Dissention breaks out among the ranks of the Cylons, especially when one of the Boomer models votes against the rest of her type – a first in Cylon history. This proves to be too much for Six to bear, and she gives the signal to fire what may be the first shots in a Cylon civil war.

The Ties That Bind

Battlestar GalacticaHaving hung up his flight suit for a law career, Apollo finds himself appointed to one of Caprica’s seats on the Quorum by President Roslin. But at the press conference to announce his appointment, reporters are more interested in the sudden reassignment of the Colonial freighter Demetrius, and the rumors that Adama put Starbuck in charge of it to find the way to Earth. Aboard the Demetrius, Starbuck is struggling to remember the signposts that might lead her back to Earth, but she’s rapidly losing the patience and loyalty of her crew. Loyalty and patience also seem to be running out between Tyrol and Cally, who is convinced that Tyrol is having an affair – a theory that seems much more plausible when she spots him in a bar with Tory. Cally’s attempts to find out what’s going on only expose her to the truth: she’s married to a Cylon. That knowledge makes her a target, but even if Tyrol isn’t willing to take drastic measures to ensure that Cally can’t tell anyone else, the others are more than willing.

Escape Velocity

Battlestar GalacticaThe crew mourns the death of Cally, even as the investigation is ongoing. But Tyrol’s grief is subdued, and he even argues with Admiral Adama when he comes to express his condolences – picking a fight to the point that Adama is left with no choice but to relieve him of duty and bust him down in rank. Tigh and Tory both urge Tyrol not to draw any more attention to himself, but he wants nothing to do with them or with being Cylon. Tory has been exploring her options more openly, shedding any pretenses of human morality along the way. But Tigh understands grief all too well – because he’s never gotten over his wife’s death at his own hands – and his own quest to understand the nature of being a Cylon leads to a fateful and violent encounter with the Six held in captivity. Meanwhile, Baltar attracts the wrong kind of attention from President Roslin when he declares that his religious sect is being oppressed with the tacit approval of the Colonial government – and he finds an unlikely champion for his cause in Apollo.

The Road Less Traveled

Battlestar GalacticaBaltar’s monotheistic following continues to gain ground, and President Roslin pays him a personal visit to remind him that all has not been forgiven. Life is also troubled aboard the Demetrius, as Starbuck fights sinking crew morale and open discussion of mutiny. The ship strumbles across a heavily damaged Cylon ship containing a Leoben clone, who insists that Starbuck return with him to a Cylon base ship to meet its Hybrid controller. With her crew already on the verge of rebelling against her authority, this is a hard sell for Starbuck, especially when a member of the crew is killed during what should have been a routine look at Leoben’s Cylon ship. And Tyrol, still serving aboard Galactica at a reduced rank, finds himself drawn into Baltar’s orbit, but he uses the opportunity to vent his anger and grief on him rather than exploring more about his Cylon nature.

The entire time, Leoben claims that the base ship’s Hybrid has something of vital importance to tell Starbuck, but to get to her, the Cylons will have to trust the Colonials as they never have before…and only if Starbuck can produce the goods will her own crew trust her. Guess What’s Coming To Dinner

Battlestar GalacticaWith Starbuck having gained the tenuous trust of the rebel Cylons aboard their damaged base ship, a jump back to the fleet is ordered, but there’s just one problem – the Demetrius is late in joining the party, putting the already weakened Cylon ship in the line of Galactica’s fire…until Colonel Tigh mysteriously countermands Adama’s orders and calls off the attack just in time. The Cylons propose a trade: they offer Adama and Roslin the coordinates to their Resurrection Hub, the mobile central repository of Cylon consciousness that makes it possible for their Resurrection Ships to function. But in exchange, the Cylons want the fleet’s help in reviving the “boxed” model known to the fleet as D’anna Biers, believing that her knowledge of the final five models will be a key revelation on the road to Earth. Tigh, already facing the uncomfortable question of how he knew to call off the attack, suggests that Adama shouldn’t keep up the fleet’s end of the bargain. Among themselves, fearing human treachery, the Cylons have a similar conversation. And as both forces prepare to betray one another, President Roslin decides to visit the Hybrid for herself and decipher the mystery of her opera house visions.

Sine Qua Non

Battlestar GalacticaIn the wake of the Cylon base ship’s unexpected jump – with Baltar, President Roslin and almost all of Galactica’s fighters and pilots aboard – Tom Zarek, as Vice President, tries to step in and fill the vacuum of power. However, neither Admiral Adama nor Lee Adama is prepared to acknowledge Zarek as the new President; feeling that Zarek is trying to assume the presidency too quickly, Lee begins the search for a new candidate that the entire quorum will approve. After shooting the leader of the Cylon rebels at point-blank range, Athena is separated from Hera and confined to the brig. A lone raptor appears, the ship that Roslin and Baltar took to the Cylon ship, but it’s now adrift and empty aside from a dead pilot. Following the FTL coordinates from the raptor’s black box, Adama orders a jump and finds the debris of a destroyed Resurrection Ship, possibly the hub ship, but no evidence that Roslin is alive – or dead. After nearly everyone around him suggests that he’s lost his perspective, Adama decides to resign as Galactica’s commander and let the fleet jump to its next destination…while he stays behind alone in a raptor at the rendezvous coordinates arranged for the pilots sent to the base ship. Before he embarks on this solo mission, however, he does see a new President sworn in – Lee’s search having produced a viable candidate, just not the candidate that Lee expected.

The Hub

Battlestar GalacticaPresident Roslin, Baltar, Starbuck, Helo and the majority of Galactica’s fighter pilots and their craft are aboard the damaged rebel Cylon ship when it jumps, apparently in response to the reconnected Hybrid sensing danger. The ship makes its way toward the Resurrection Hub, but en route, President Roslin issues new orders to Helo: she is altering the agreement with the Cylons, and wants D’anna Biers brought to her immediately rather than allowing her to be debriefed by her fellow Cylons. Aboard the Hub ship, D’anna is revived by Brother Cavel, who hopes that a few token words from her will bring a swift end to the civil war among the Cylons. She refuses to cooperate, and is surprised when a joint Cylon-human attack leaves her in the hands of the rebels and the Colonial fleet. The Resurrection Hub is destroyed, putting an end to the Cylons’ ability to download into a new body and leveling the playing field by making the human model Cylons helplessly mortal. Mortality is also on Roslin’s mind after she hears an injured Baltar’s confession that he helped bring an end to civilization as she once knew it – and feels little remorse for that act.

Revelations

Battlestar GalacticaWith both President Roslin and the newly-arrived Admiral Adama aboard the base ship, D’anna tips the balance in the Cylons’ favor: she takes Roslin hostage and demands that Adama escort her back to Galactica, where she announces that the final five must be allowed to come to the base ship of their own accord to rejoin their own kind. Shuttle traffic is not to be slowed down, examined closely or stopped. Lee Adama, in one of his first acts as the new president of the colonies, is forced to acceed to D’anna’s demands – and then orders his father to undertake a risky rescue mission which, if success looks impossible, will end in the destruction of the base ship and the hostages aboard. One by one, the Cylons in the fleet reveal themselves: Tory goes to the base ship supposedly to bring Roslin’s medication to her, and admit her true nature at the same time. Tigh admits to Adama that he’s a Cylon, and goes to await his fate as Adama turns the final corner into a nervous breakdown. As they try to figure out why a new signal has brought them to Starbuck’s viper, Tyrol and Sam Anders are arrested before Starbuck’s eyes for being Cylons, after Tigh reveals them to Lee. Lee threatens to airlock Tigh, Anders and Tyrol unless D’anna calls off the hostage situation; instead she locks all of the base ship’s nukes on the civilian vehicles in the fleet. Starbuck finds the source of the signal that drew the newly-revealed Cylons to her ship: it’s the ship itself, its instruments somehow pointing the way to Earth. Lee opts to share this information with the Cylons, which ends the hostage crisis, and Cylons and Colonials set a course for Earth.

But the next crisis to strike the fleet is the fact that they actually get there.
