As Mordrin tries to control and redirect Gervase’s anger at the news of Julia’s death, Brother Hugo begins working in earnest to build his own power base within the Knights, growing paranoid that Prior Mordrin will try to eliminate him soon. Hugo also anticipates that Gervase will be set against him at some point, and so he sets events in motion to try to eliminate Mordrin’s prize catch, using Julia as the bait again.
