Blackadder Season 3

Nob and Nobility

BlackadderIt’s the time of the French Revolution and all of London is being overrun with French aristocrats, much to the annoyance of Edmund. After he disparages The Scarlet Pimpernel in front of two noblemen, Edmund claims that he will go to France and rescue a nobleman. But when the revolution extends to the French Embassy while Edmund is visiting, he may need rescuing himself…

Guest Cast: Chris Barrie (Revolutionary Ambassador), Tim McInnerny (Lord Topper / The Comte d’Frufru / The Scarlet Pimpernel), Nigel Planer (Lord Smedley / Mme La Guillotine / The Scarlet Pimpernel)

Notes: Chris Barrie is best known from his UK sitcom roles: Arnold J. Rimmer in the sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf and Gordon Brittas in The Brittas Empire. He also portrays Lara Croft’s butler Hilary in the Tomb Raider series of films.

Tim McInnerny here makes his only appearance in Blackadder The Third. He chose not to portray a new version of Percy (for fear of being typecast), making this the only Blackadder series in which he was not a regular.

Nigel Planer is best known from his portrayal of hippie Neal on groundbreaking UK sitcom The Young Ones.

Nob and Nobility did not originally air in the United States, due to copyright issues concerning the character of The Scarlet Pimpernel.

Grossberg’s Return

Max HeadroomThe latest telelection is upon the public, and a vicious mudslinging war is being waged on the airwaves by incumbent Simon Peller and rival candidate Harriet Garth. Network 23 is squarely in Peller’s court, but Garth is being backed by Network 66 – where Ned Grossberg, the unscrupulous ex-Network 23 executive who was ousted after the Blipvert scandal, is slowly taking control. While Edison and Murray fight to keep 23’s coverage above the war of words, Grossberg is playing all sides against the middle, and his aim is to take over Network 66 from the inside, not to propel a particular candidate into office. And if that means engineering a political scandal that not only takes down Garth, but destroys the career of Edison Carter as well, Grossberg won’t hesitate to do it.

The Poison Pen

Friday The 13th: The SeriesAfter taking a vote among his fellow senior monks on whether or not to sell the property on which his order’s monastery sits, Abbot Capilano experiences a miracle, levitating off the ground and floating away from the monastery’s tower. He then plunges to his death.

It isn’t long before another prophecy of doom is made, this time about the abbot’s successor, who dies right on schedule. At the shop, Jack believes he’s tracked down which cursed artifact has found itself in the wrong hands at the monastery – a cursed quill pen whose writings are destined to come true. Now Ryan and Mickey have to find out which of the monks is dabbling in forces far beyond his control, though the grisly death of the man they believe is the prophet of doom throws them off their trail. But the real writer of the deadly predictions is still at large – and now he knows that the two young monks who have just arrived are a threat to his ambitions.

Dream Thieves

Max HeadroomEdison is doing an exposè on “dream houses” – a new industry in which people pay to experience the immersive, tactile sensations of others’ dreams – when he encounters an old rival and fellow report, Paddy Ashton. An articulate Irishman who seems out of place as a drifting blank, Paddy still harbors a bit of a grudge against Edison, but also still harbors a dream of being back in the news business. When Paddy turns up dead mere hours after Edison shares a drink with him, Edison latches on to something Paddy was trying to tell him about: dream donors. For some people to buy dreams, others must donate them, usually earning a pittance in the process. Paddy was managing to eke out an existence selling his dreams, but something was troubling him toward the end. Edison goes undercover, going into the dream house as a donor, where he finds that the dream house attendants have been forcing their donors to have more intense subconscious sensory experiences, even if it kills them with their own nightmares.

Knights Of God

Episode 5

Knights Of GodMordrin wastes no time in publicizing Gervase’s betrayal of the resistance movement and his father. When Owen finds out, he begins to question the danger he’s sent his son into, but is powerless to interfere. Nearby, Julia is discovered, injured by gunfire from the helicopter chase but not dead. At the training camp for Knights of God officers, Gervase is proving to be in less-than-ideal physical condition. Talking to fellow recruits, he discovers that he’s the only officer trainee to have been personally inducted by Prior Mordrin, and he begins to quest why – and wants to know what happened to Julia. Mordrin discovers that his most trusted henchman, Brother Hugo, issued orders to kill Julia, when in fact Mordrin wanted her brought back alive.

Notes: Actor John Hallam (1941-2006) was a recurring player on the short-lived early ’70s BBC sci-fi drama Moonbase 3, and appeared in such later series as The Black Adder and Doctor Who (including the very last episode filmed of the original series). His genre movie appearances included The Wicker Man, Flash Gordon, Dragonslayer, Lifeforce and Kull The Conqueror. Don Henderson (1932-1977) also appeared in Sylvester McCoy-era Doctor Who (as easily the most formidable foe of McCoy’s troubled first season) and Red Dwarf, but most sharp-eyed genre fans will recognize him as General Taggi, the Imperial officer who questions the Emperor’s dissolution of the Senate in Star Wars (1977).

Cupid’s Quiver

Friday The 13th: The SeriesThe brutal murder of a woman in a honeymoon suite repeats the pattern of a previous murder case, and Jack suspects that the common element may be a hideous Cupid statue that Uncle Lewis sold to another man four years ago – and that man, too, was convicted of murdering a woman after seducing her with the aid of a Cupid statue. Ryan and Mickey discover that the statue was taken by a member of a local college fraternity, and they try to track it down, finding that it’s changed hands again. Whacketts

Max HeadroomA huge residential building collapses, taking many of its residents with it. Edison is assigned to the story, and when he arrives at the scene of the disaster, he’s stunned to see the survivors rejoicing at the rescue of television sets instead of people. Despite the magnitude of the collapse and Edison’s live coverage, Big Time TV pulls ahead of Network 23 in the ratings with a mind-numbingly dumb game show – the same show being watched by all of the survivors of the building. A cop at the scene suspects something as up, but when he shares his suspicions with Edison, he’s found dead a while later. Despite Reg’s annoyance that his viewers want it run for the 11th time in a row, “Whacketts” even pulls ahead of Network 66. Edison and Bryce discover that a subliminal video signal is embedded into the one episode of “Whacketts” that keeps running, a signal that forces its viewers’ brains to produce an addictive stream of endorphins. The more people watch, the more hooked they become – and if Ned Grossberg succeeds in wooing Dominique into selling “Whacketts” to Network 66, the entire population could become addicted…just like Max.

A Cup Of Time

Friday The 13th: The SeriesA homeless girl is offered a cup of tea by a stranger, a cup with a design of vines and leaves printed on its side. The vines seem to spring from the cup and strangle the girl to death…and then return to the cup.

This isn’t the first unexplained murder in the same general area, though, and the police have no clues. Mickey and Ryan pay a visit to the investigator following the case, but he’s less than receptive to “amateur” help. The only clue is an ivy leaf, which Jack is able to identify…and trace back to a cup sold by Uncle Louis. The cup is yet another cursed item, one which can transfer a victim’s youth and vitality to the person who holds the cup. Ryan is incredulous when the cup’s trail leads to Lady Die, a past-her-prime rock star trying desperately to return to the limelight. But Lady Die is recognized by Bertie, an older woman trying to catch Jack’s attention, as someone she knew when she was younger. Can they be the same person? Has Lady Die been trying to reclaim her youth for longer than any of them can imagine?
