{"id":3032,"date":"2012-04-18T16:49:10","date_gmt":"2012-04-18T22:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelogbook.com\/earl\/?p=3032"},"modified":"2012-04-18T16:49:10","modified_gmt":"2012-04-18T22:49:10","slug":"victory-lap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelogbook.com\/earl\/2012\/04\/18\/victory-lap\/","title":{"rendered":"Victory lap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A friend and former coworker of mine is a Congressional staffer, and got to catch space shuttle Discovery&#8217;s &#8220;victory lap&#8221; on the back of a 747 en route to Dulles International, where Discovery will be headed for its final destination&#8230; a museum.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelogbook.com\/forumpix\/victorylap1.jpg\" alt=\"Discovery\" \/> <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I remember back in the &#8217;70s, there was no more beautiful sight than this big aerodynamic looking <strong><em>spaceship of the future<\/em><\/strong> catching a ride on a 747 cross-country.  The first time NASA dropped it off the back of the 747 to see if it would glide as designed or drop like a rock, it was break-into-programming-for-half-an-hour newsworthy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelogbook.com\/forumpix\/victorylap2.jpg\" alt=\"Discovery\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Seeing the remaining shuttles ferried around on a 747 now is just sad.  Another reminder that the shuttle era is over and done with.
