Every once in a while, there’s an unexpected dividend to being on Facebook, aside from getting to hear how crappy everyone’s Black Friday shopping\/working experiences were, or finding out who found the damn lost sheep in Farmville. Once of my classmates found this, scanned it and posted it – I don’t think I still have my own copy of this anymore!<\/p>\n

\nIf I recall correctly – even though his scanned copy didn’t have this on it – I later added some press-type in Microgramma Bold Extended (similar to the press-type that’s in the speech balloon) that proclaimed this piece to be EARL GREEN’S THEORY OF GOD. It was drawn somewhere between 1988 and 1990; I’ll lean more toward the latter end of that spread as the probable point of origin. It’s very reminiscent of my hand-drawn artwork style, then and now (i.e. kinda crappy). But it’s still kind of funny.<\/p>\n

As I recall, my chemistry teacher (and frequent cartooning cohort) John Lankford wouldn’t even touch this one – in a “oh man, let’s not open that can of worms” sort of way. Both of us drawing derogatory cartoons about the school’s hilariously strict-going-on-fascist administration at the time was kosher; this clearly went over the line for him. Of course, now that I’m closer to being the same age that he was at the time, I can appreciate his position: making fun of the vice principal was one thing; a science teacher advocating a cartoon that borders on blasphemy (keep in mind, despite how tame it is, this is the buckle of the Bible Belt) would just be begging for trouble.<\/p>\n
