It’s funny…

When I go back and think about the years I spent working in radio, and then I got out of radio and have scarcely listened to radio since then. Occasionally NPR, but even then, maybe once or twice a year if it’s an interview or a feature that I’m aware of in advance.
The same really seems to be happening to me with TV now. I still watch stuff, and I have a few “appointment” shows that I keep up with (Galactica, Lost, etc.), but by and large, the TV stays off now, at least in my game room. I might occasionally watch some TV with the Mrs., but generally if we do (like the all-night Torchwood marathon this weekend), it’s something on DVD.
This is not the point where I get all snooty and say that TV doesn’t have anything to offer anyone anymore, because I don’t buy that. Just saying that I’m kinda liking this whole business of not having to have Wife Swap on the TV behind me, or The Bachelor, or what have you. I’ll admit that I’ve gotten a little unplugged from the local news too, which I’ll probably need to get back into later, but right now, it’s kinda like I’m in detox where that’s concerned.
I hear things aren’t exactly going swimmingly at the ol’ TV station.
Man.
Awful sorry to hear about that.
I’m wondering what to do with my work blog, since not everything I’m doing right now, either full-time or freelance, lends itself to that format. I may have some freelance video production work to show off in there soon, but updates will probably start to be very few and far between. Actually, given the restrictions, pressure and other factors that I was working under for the last year or so that I was at the TV station, updates there had already tailed off, since I just wasn’t being given the opportunity to produce a lot of work where I was happy enough with it to show it off. The last really “heavy” stream of updates had been in November sweeps 2005, where I was practically flying solo. And that is very telling.

Thank you for saying that. Every time that topic comes up in conversation or on a forum, I get uncomfortable. That’s because the conversation almost always has an undercurrent of distaste for TV and how superior the speaker is for not watching TV (or only watching “quality” TV). A person’s character should not be based on what they like on TV or even whether or not they like TV. (As you can tell I’ve had a couple bad experiences in this area).

Anytime I see a message board topic “Has anyone given up/stopped watching/stopped listening to/stopped ingesting [X]?”, I usually read it as “Hey, let’s be all condescending to anyone who hasn’t given up/stopped watching/stopped listening to/stopped ingesting [X]!”
The fact of the matter is, I’ve watched more than enough TV in my lifetime for two people, in all likelihood; both my waistline and the 2,000-strong episode guide section can attest to this. I’m about due for a rest.
Until Lost and Galactica are back on the air, and then look out!

Yes, I have the same impression whenever I see a “Has anyone given up/stopped watching/stopped listening to/stopped ingesting [X]?” thread. I usually avoid those threads as I am afraid I just might lose it and post what I REALLY think of the thread.
When I calm down I contemplate the possibility of posting a satirical thread with a title like: “Has anyone given up breathing?” or “Has anyone stopped taking a dump?” I don’t do it, of course, because I think most people wouldn’t understand what I was trying to do.
BTW, I think if “Lost” featured an episode with the Battlestar Galatica landing on the island, your head would explode (or you would revert to a state of total fanboyishess.

If Desmond hadn’t done the failsafe thing in last year’s season finale, who knows what would’ve been drawn to the island…more planes chock full of people with troubled pasts, Battlestars, TARDISes…eh…maybe I should stop there.
