Professional Experience
I have over 15 years of hands-on experience with promotional and commercial concept creation and script writing, traditional and non-linear audio/video editing and production (including broadcast graphics and 3-D animation), graphic design for on-air and web use, and HTML programming and design. In radio, I’ve also done a respectable amount of news, promotional and commercial copywriting, presentation and production, and continue to do voice work to this day. The combination of all of this experience brings a healthy respect for content and appearance to my television and web design work.
I have an aggressive philosophy in both sight and sound. The hallmarks of my best TV work have been the judicious use of powerful and appropriate music, a healthy respect for the viewer’s ability to take in all the information presented, and naturally a sense of humor! However, I also have a well-honed sense of aesthetics and am able to tell when a different or more traditional approach is called for.
In February 1996, the Greater Fort Smith Advertising Federation honored me with two Addy Silver Awards for my work: my opening titles for Arkansas Lady Razorbacks basketball, which consisted entirely of computer animation, won second place in the Video/Film Animation category, and the promotional campaign I devised for Star Trek Voyager was awarded second place overall in the TV Self-Promotion division.
My web design work has also received recognition. Phosphor Dot Fossils, a retro video game-oriented section of theLogBook.com, has received the I.C. When Eye Award and the “Best Of” Award from a French site called TheArcades.com. In a February 2000 article in the Jerusalem Times, Ahron Shapiro wrote that Phosphor Dot Fossils is an “informative site, which has meticulously pieced together the histories of the most popular [classic arcade games].” The site has received favorable reviews from the Official Playstation Magazine, the Sci-Fi Channel, and evem former Atari employees.
Professional Timeline
KHBS/KHOG (ABC 40/29) - Fort Smith, Arkansas - Promotions Writer/Producer (January 2000 - December 2006): From 2000 through 2006, I was a news promotions writer/producer at ABC 40/29. Nightly duties included working closely with reporters, news producers and the assignment editor to determine which stories should feature in the evening’s promos; writing and shooting topical and special promos (such as proof-of-performance spots and series specials during sweeps periods); and editing and post-production. I also handled various graphics, editing and web site duties for other departments on an as-needed basis. In 2004, I was among the recipients of an award from the Arkansas Associated Press for best investigative news story, on which I served as editor and graphic designer.
WACY-TV (UPN 32) - Green Bay, Wisconsin - Promotions Writer/Producer and Webmaster (August 1997 - October 1999): I created, from concept to completion, many image and topical campaigns for UPN 32’s entertainment, sports and public affairs programming. Among my major projects there were the creation and maintenance of the “UPN 32 Prime Time Invasion” campaign (a package which encompassed WACY’s lineup of network and syndicated science fiction and action hours), and a Windows-inspired image campaign for fall 1999. Day-to-day duties included writing end credit voice-overs, supervising the assembly of episodic and network promos for air, scheduling promos in station logs, and handling contests. I also wrote a great deal of content for and designed UPN 32’s web site.
KFDF-TV (UPN 32/36) - Fort Smith, Arkansas - Promotions Producer/Production Manager (March 1995 - July 1997): I served in numerous capacities between 1993 and 1997 at Pharis Broadcasting, the company that owned and operated Fox affiliate KPBI and UPN affiliate KFDF in Fort Smith, overseeing production, promotions and graphic design. I designed the logo and created station launch campaigns for our new sister station, KFDF, including a major launch/image campaign to herald the acquisition of Star Trek: Voyager from a competing station that had been airing the program in syndication. KFDF launched in spring, 1995.
KPBI-TV (Fox 46/15) - Fort Smith, Arkansas - Promotions Producer/Production Manager (July 1993 - July 1997): I was entrusted with all on-air promo duties, from tagging syndication episodics to creating new image campaigns and graphics packages for local programming. I also handled the post-production of virtually every commercial spot done in-house, and programmed the original Pharis Broadcasting web site. I was in charge of both stations’ on-air promos and commercial production until I left in July 1997.
KLSZ-FM - Van Buren, Arkansas - disc jockey/commercial writer/producer
KBBQ-FM - Fort Smith, Arkansas - disc jockey (August 1989-July 1992): Prior to working in television, I spent four years in radio, starting out as a disc jockey on KBBQ (”Q-100.7″), which also involved some news writing and presentation. At KLSZ (”Class 102″), I was again a disc jockey and handled numerous production duties on a nightly basis.
