While minstering in India, Bruce Barnes falls ill and slips into a coma. Nicolae Carpathia suddenly alters his flight plans and asks Ray to find someone to fly Global Community One (formerly Air Force One) on a decoy flight. Ray contacts an old friend of his to take the flight, but it turns out to be a trap – renegade military jets blast GC-1 out of the sky and give Carpathia’s forces an excuse to bomb the White House. Carpathia’s forces also retaliate against Britain and Egypt, who were assisting President Fitzhugh’s insurrection, and millions around the world die; London is reduced to a nuclear wasteland in retaliation. When Ray, Buck, Chloe and Amanda go to visit Bruce in a hospital in Chicago, they discover that the hospital was accidentally destroyed by GC bombers – Bruce is dead. With their leader and teacher gone, the Tribulation Force must now survive in a world at war.
