The Coming Darkness

Left Behind: Tribulation ForceBuck’s former editor – now Nicolae Carpathia’s press secretary – tracks him down, even leaving a message at Buck’s unlisted number, and insisting that Buck come to New York for another interview with Carpathia. Given that Carpathia has gone to great lengths to ruin his career (and killed two men during their last encounter), Buck is nervous about why he wants another meeting. He’s also nervous about pursuing a romantic relationship with Chloe Steele, and he’s not the only one. Rayford watches from a distance with some amusement as his daughter wrestles with her feelings for Buck. But both Buck and Chloe are worried about even trying to forge a new relationship in a world that has only seven years left to exist – especially when Bruce Barnes points out that the fight ahead will almost certainly cost some members of the Tribulation Force their lives.

Tribulation Force

Left Behind: Tribulation ForceBuck returns from the fateful meeting at the UN, only to discover that Carpathia erased anyone’s memory of his having been there. Buck is demoted and transferred to Chicago, which puts him in closer contact with Pastor Bruce Barnes and the Steeles, but also introduces him to a hard-nosed, unsympathetic bureau editor who would rather find a reason to fire him than work with him. Bruce invites Buck to join a tight-knit group of people who will not only help maintain each other’s faith, but help others to see it as well. And Nicolae Carpathia continues to consolidate his power base by foisting a nuclear disarmament treaty upon the world – one which no nation dares to ignore, for the weapons will be handed over to the UN, and Carpathia’s finger is now on the button.

Project Infinity

Dalek Empire: Project InfinityThe war against the Daleks rages on, but Alby Brook doesn’t give a damn – he’s deep in mourning for the woman he loved, and deeply drunk. But when he and Kalendorf discover that Suz left her knowledge of the Daleks’ plans behind for them, there’s new hope for the human resistance. But what Kalendorf and Alby don’t realize until it’s too late is that the Daleks have planted their servants deep within the ranks of the resistance, relaying vital tactical information back to their masters. One captured Dalek servant provides the freedom fighters with a way to listen in on the Dalek communications network, and the terrifying truth of Project Infinity comes to light. A desperate race ensues between the resistance forces and the mighty fleets of the Daleks, and the prize is universal peace…or universal domination.

Review: I wasn’t sure about the whole Dalek Empire series at first. We’re going to have 4+ solid hours of Daleks? On audio only? Are you kidding?

Well, Nick Briggs wasn’t, and no pun intended, he didn’t forget the human factor. The Daleks aren’t necessarily in the foreground full-time, as a story of human defiance, and trying to pursue love and freedom against literally impossible odds is woven throughout the large-scale war story. Kudos to the cast who got to play human beings in this one – they were all excellent, even if Gareth Thomas’ Kalendorf really did start to smack mightily of Thomas’ starring role in the BBC’s late 70s space saga Blake’s 7. Death To The Daleks!

Dalek Empire: Death To The Daleks! When Alby Brook returns to his superiors at the Space Security Service, he’s stunned into silence when they execute Gordon Pellan on sight – and is even more stunned when he’s told that Pellan was a Dalek agent, reporting on Alby’s whereabouts. Alby has a new assignment, but not one he’s eager to take on: he is to contact Suz and find out if she knows anything the Daleks have found out about Project Infinity…and if she does, Alby is to kill her. Suz is losing support elsewhere too, as Kalendorf chafes against her willingness to help the Daleks motivate their slaves throughout the galaxy. Kalendorf wants to fan the flames of rebellion immediately, before the Daleks take over any more civilizations – and his fears are well-founded, for Earth has now surrendered to the Dalek advance. As the latest remnants of the Space Security Force rally for one last strike against the Daleks, their last frontal attack before resorting to guerilla warfare, Alby discovers that the decision of whether or not Suz is to live has been taken out of his hands.
