There are few things as certain in the video game industry as the fact that
corporate empires rise and fall. That explains this collection's odd mix of
games manufactured in the 80s by Midway and Williams (who merged later).
Included are Joust 2, Spy Hunter, Burgertime,
Splat! and Moon Patrol.
(Midway, 1997)
The most recent - and possibly final - entry in the Arcade's Greatest
Hits series, this Playstation disc collects an odd hodgepodge of Midway and
Williams games, some of which I don't even remember. Joust 2: Survival Of
The Fittest was a pretty hard game to come by, and the packaging refers to
Splat! as a "lost classic" (huh?). On the other hand, Moon Patrol, Burgertime and Spy Hunter should need no
introduction to you.
Though you're still forced to rely on the tried-true-and-tired D-pad for
control, the games are faithfully reproduced, which is just what we've come to
expect from the crack squadron of game emulators at Digital Eclipse. Moon
Patrol is an absolute blast, and Burgertime isn't bad either.
One of the most interesting features is the classic video game game show,
which packages this disc's buttload of trivia and designer interviews in an
interesting (and interactive) way, as the player "competes for over one
million pixels in prizes!" Interviews with Eugene Jarvis, Larry DeMar and
several other designers make this one of the most interesting features of the
whole package.
Overall, an excellent compilation of some well-known and extremely obscure
titles - and some fun extras to boot.
Rating:
One whole dollar - trade it in for more quarters, you'll want to play this
one again!
