Actor Adam West, forever known to millions as the star of TV’s Batman in the 1960s, dies at the age of 88 after a short bout with leukemia. After years of paying his dues with guest starring roles, bit parts and commercial appearances, West beat out actors such as Lyle Waggoner for the role of Batman, but after three seasons on TV and a movie produced by the makers of the TV series, Batman had run its course, and West found himself battling typecasting, accepting work in subpar projects and returning to the role of Batman both as voice work (for the Super Friends animated series) and live action (the lamentable 1979 Legends Of The Superheroes specials). Voice work became a mainstay of West’s career, and he landed a long-running recurring role on Seth MacFarlane’s Family Guy animated series.
La-La Land Records releases Bear McCreary’s soundtrack from the Battlestar Galactica spinoff pilot Caprica. 
The 736th episode of Doctor Who (the 38th since the series’ revival) airs on BBC1. Though it is this season’s “Doctor lite” story – featuring minimal appearances from David Tennant and Freema Agyeman – Blink proves to be hugely popular, thanks in no small part to the most popular enemy that the new series has produced to date, the Weeping Angels, making their first appearance here. Blink goes on to win a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation (Short-Form).
The independently produced Doctor Who spoof Do You Have A Licence To Save This Planet? is released on VHS, starring Sylvester McCoy.
TNT airs the first episode of J. Michael Straczynski’s short-lived Babylon 5 spinoff Crusade. Starring Gary Cole (Office Space) and Daniel Dae Kim (Lost), the series concerns an Earth ship scouring the galaxy for the cure to a biological weapon that has left Earth quarantined and the human race’s days numbered. Tim Thomerson guest stars.

Co-written and directed by William Shatner (whose contract allows him to direct a Star Trek movie since his co-star Leonard Nimoy has done so), Star Trek V: The Final Frontier premieres in theaters to decidedly mixed reviews. This is the first movie featuring the original cast to debut during the run of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and its shaky box office performance ends Harve Bennett’s run as the creative force behind the Star Trek movies.

Mars invades Earth again thanks to producer Jeff Wayne, who gathers an unlikely assemblage of prodigious talent around him to create a new musical version of H.G. Wells’ The War Of The Worlds. Featuring Richard Burton, Justin Hayward (of Moody Blues fame), Chris Thompson (Manfred Mann) and others, the double-album becomes an instant classic – a science fiction rock opera.
The 26th and final episode of the horror anthology series The Evil Touch airs on Australia’s Nine Network, hosted by Anthony Quayle (Strange Report). (The series will later appear in the U.S. and elsewhere in first-run syndication.) Kim Hunter (Planet Of The Apes) guest stars.
