The Quality of Mercy

Babylon 5Ivanova discovers that Dr. Franklin has been operating a free clinic for dwellers of Down Below, the area of B5 where most of the unemployed eke out a poverty-stricken existence, and that he’s been using some of his medlab supplies to do so. Not much later, Franklin himself learns of another free clinic being operated aboard the station, one which promises to heal everything. Franklin finds Dr. Laura Rosen, an aging physician who has discovered an alien device with an unknown purpose that seems to remove illness, disease and debilitation harmlessly. Dr. Rosen herself is slowly dying of a terminal illness, but does not use the machine on herself. In the meantime, convicted murderer Mueller is sentenced to have his brain wiped and reprogrammed so he may serve a useful function in society. Prior to the wipe, Talia must scan him so she can compare his thoughts before and after the wipe to verify the success of the operation. What she finds in Mueller’s mind horrifies her…and when he escapes his guards, more terrors are sure to follow.

The Search – Part I

Star Trek: Deep Space NineStardate 48212.4: Preparations are being made aboard DS9 for an inevitable visit from the Dominion, but no one can escape the fact that the station would wither under an attack from the Jem’Hadar. Commander Sisko, having gone to Earth for Starfleet briefings on the threat from the Gamma Quadrant, arrives in the experimental Federation vessel Defiant, a small ship originally created to do battle with the Borg. Carrying more firepower than any other Starfleet ship and a cloaking device loaned by the Romulans, the Defiant is to go to the Dominion before the Dominion arrives in the Alpha Quadrant; if need be, the ship is also to take the fight to the other side of the galaxy. Another innovation brought about by Starfleet Command is the transfer of a Starfleet security officer to the station, relieving Odo of all but station-bound security matters. The shapeshifter withdraws in anger while Sisko assembles a crew for the Defiant’s mission to seek out the Dominion for negotiations, but joins the Defiant crew at the last minute. A trade contact of Quark’s offers some information but little help in the search for the Founders of the Dominion, but does point the crew out to a planet through which most Dominion communications pass. When the Defiant arrives there, Dax and O’Brien beam down and find the possible coordinates of the Dominion command center – and are captured by the Jem’Hadar, who have also arrived in force in orbit. The Defiant manages to take out only one Jem’Hadar ship and barely survives the withering assault of the remaining attackers. The Defiant is boarded and Kira is blasted unconscious in the ensuing melee. Odo takes her and evacuates in an escape shuttle, heading not back to the station, but to a planet in the Omarian Nebula with which he has been preoccupied since arriving in the Gamma Quadrant. The planet turns out to be the home of a race of life forms very like Odo himself, one of which welcomes him home.

The Search – Part II

Star Trek: Deep Space NineStardate not given: Odo has arrived on his home world, greeted by his fellow shapeshifters. He at last learns of his origins – he, along with hundreds of other newly-formed shapeshifters, were dispelled into the far reaches of space and genetically programmed to return home with their knowledge later; Odo is the first to make it back. But his homecoming is not without its complications – his fellow shapeshifters consider him tainted by the many years he has spent in the comapny of “solids,” and he has much to learn about his heritage. In the meantime, Sisko and Bashir, having escaped the Defiant in a shuttle, are picked up by Dax and O’Brien, who return them to DS9. Negotiations are now apparently underway between the Dominion and the Federation, but some of the proposed treaty’s stipulations have sinister undercurrents; the Romulans are being excluded from the talks, though the Cardassians, Ferengi and Klingons are being welcomed, and it is revealed to Sisko that the station – and Bajor – are being handed over to the Dominion. As the Jem’Hadar being walking over the station’s inhabitants, Sisko and his crew – and unlikely ally Garak – take up arms to try to take DS9 back from its new owners. Meanwhile, on the planet of the shapeshifters and unknown to all, the Founders lie in wait, conducting a terrifying experiment.

Protect And Survive

Space PrecinctIn the year 2040, interplanetary travel has become a reality. 20-year NYPD veteran Patrick Brogan is now working a new beat, patrolling space near the planet Altor, home to the nearest orbital precinct base for the interspecies Space Police.

But the transition isn’t as easy as Brogan and his hotshot young partner, Jack Haldane, sometimes make it look. They pursue a courier with insider knowledge of an interstellar crime syndicate, but the pursuit itself causes considerable damage and Brogan is forced to shoot to kill when the courier draws a gun on him. Later, the informant who tipped Brogan off to the presence of the courier is brutally murdered by crime boss Gershom… who has unwittingly left a witness to the incident. Brogan and Haldane are assigned to keep that witness alive long enough to testify against Gershom in court, a task that won’t be as easy as it sounds.

Notes: Gerry Anderson’s first live-action series since Space: 1999, nearly 20 years earlier. In that time, Anderson had split with his wife and former producing partner, Sylvia Anderson, and sold off the rights to his earlier Supermarionation series as well as such projects as UFO and Space: 1999; his only other work since Space: 1999 had been the puppet series Terrahawks and Dick Spanner, P.I. in the 1980s. Unless one counts the Thunderbirds live action remake movie directed by Jonathan Frakes, Space Precinct remains Anderson’s last live-action project to date. The show shares some common ground with Space: 1999, including the “this episode!” montage in the opening credits, and sticking steadfastly to miniature models even at a time when CGI was rapidly coming into vogue with series such as Babylon 5 and seaQuest DSV on the air at the same time. Even before that, however, Anderson initiated Space Precinct in the late 1980s as a pilot film called Space Police, which starred Shane Rimmer as Chuck Brogan. Space Precinct launched in the lucrative syndicated market for science fiction in the U.S. that was created by the popularity of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but didn’t catch on in the U.S.; by the time Space Precinct premiered and gained an audience in Europe in 1995, its fate was already decided: there would be no second season without success in the American market.

Space PrecinctThe death of an armed street thug draws the attention of Brogan and Haldane, especially since there are no signs of a struggle – indicating that telekinesis may be the murder weapon. After he’s questioned in the death, a rival thug and several of his cohorts are killed in the same way: their hearts – human or alien – are accelerated until they burst inside their chests. It soon becomes obvious that there’s a new face in charge of crime on the streets, and it’s not a human one. One alien offers to come forward with information, but he dies in a suspicious accident before he can talk. Brogan closes in on a likely suspect, but even under questioning, he won’t talk either – and he certainly isn’t talking about the mysterious (and conveniently mute) alien girl taking shelter in his apartment. Brogan is alarmed when his wife Sally offers to let the alien girl stay at their home, since nothing is known about her. Only too late, Brogan discovers that the missing murder weapon is in his own home with his wife and children.

Star Trek: Deep Space NineStardate not given: A drunk Klingon named Kozak tries to kill Quark in a dispute over his bar tab, and winds up falling on his own knife by accident. Quark, attempting to boost business, tells Odo that he bravely killed Kozak in self-defense. Odo warns that Kozak’s family will come after Quark to claim the right of vengeance, which springs to mind very quickly when a new Klingon arrival who claims to be Kozak’s brother D’Ghor accosts Quark on the station. But D’Ghor doesn’t want revenge, he wants Quark to keep quiet about the true nature of Kozak’s death to avoid dishonoring his family.

Body And Soul

Space PrecinctBrogan takes his son on a joy ride through an asteroid belt, but the father-and-son outing is cut short with the discovery of a crashed, but largely intact, derelict spacecraft. Its hull still holds a pressurized atmosphere, so Brogan lands to investigate, though he’s worried about his son’s safety. They find a badly decomposed body, but no other signs of life; the ship is intact enough for Brogan to launch it again. It’s identified as a 20 year old prototype vehicle built by the giant Humes Interspace corporation, whose representatives are a little less than helpful because of the potential bad publicity. But before the derelict can be brought back to the precinct, a self-destruct system activates, and Brogan and his son barely have time to escape in their own ship. The ship – with evidence of a murder aboard – is vaporized, and Haldane can’t help but notice that this only happened after Humes Interspace was notified that the prototype ship was still in one piece. Brogan has to plow through layers of bureaucracy – and Humes’ unhelpful assistant – to finally get an audience with the reclusive Humes himself, but after that first brief meeting yields little information, new evidence surfaces. DNA from the body abaord the prototype ship was left under the fingernails of Brogan’s son, and the DNA reveals the identity of the murder victim: spacecraft magnate Alden Humes. So who did Brogan and Haldane meet at Humes’ corporate headquarters… and who’s really in charge of Humes Interspace?

Space PrecinctNotes: With his reclusive nature, his obsessive avoidance of human contact, his aerospace company and, of course, his name, the character of Humes is obviously based on Howard Hughes (1905-1976). This episode of Space Precinct was the one distributed via VHS videotape to U.S. television stations as a “taster”; the tape was intended to impress program directors of independent stations enough to pick the show up from North American distributor Grove Television. Guest star Will Barton appeared in Survival, the final adventure of the original Doctor Who series’ last season, as a troubled youth exploited by the evil Master.

Equilibrium

Star Trek: Deep Space NineStardate not given: During an informal home-cooked dinner held by Sisko for the senior staff, Dax picks up a musical instrument of Jake’s and begins to pick out, seemingly at random, a tune which she becomes preoccupied with, and it follows her into some disturbing hallucinations of masked figures. A medical checkup reveals some deficiencies in the chemical links between Jadzia and the Dax symbiont, necessitating a trip to the specialized medical facilities on the Trill planet. Though she shows favorable response to her initial treatments, Dax goes into shock when the computer aboard the Defiant displays a picture of the Trill composer of the song that has been on her mind. Sisko and Bashir try to seek out the mysterious link with the long-dead musician and Dax only to have all the official channels closed in their faces to protect a devastating secret, the cost of which will be Jadzia’s life.

Second Skin

Star Trek: Deep Space NineStardate not given: Kira sets off for Bajor when it is revealed that her memories of a specific event in the Cardassian occupation differ with the official records of the Bajoran central archives. She never makes it to the archives, however, because she is captured and transported to Cardassia Prime, where she wakes up with the features of a Cardassian. She is told time and again that she is, in fact, a Cardassian by birth whose deep cover spying assignment necessitated her cosmetic alteration to look like a Bajoran rebel named Kira Nerys who was captured and killed. But she begins to worry when the Cardassians’ efforts to make her believe this story seem to go above and beyond their normal brainwashing techniques, including the arrival of a high-ranking Legate who claims that Kira is his daughter. Kira doesn’t have any information that the Cardassians would go to these lengths to retrieve and begins to wonder if perhaps the history of which she has just learned is true.

Double Duty

Space PrecinctBrogan and Haldane tail a crime lord back to his hideout, but when he and his henchmen are brutally murdered as the cops wait outside, they can find no suspect, and there’s only one survivor who seems to be little more than the dead criminal’s paramour. Traces of a life-extending drug are found, and that leads to an alien dealer who can only be identified by the woman who survived the massacre. When that criminal is also killed violently, uncomfortable questions surface: why is it that this is only happening to the suspects being tailed by Brogan and Haldane? The next move in their investigation might bring the killer right into the heart of the police headquarters.

Chrysalis

Babylon 5Negotiations between the Narn and Centauri over territorial claims to quadrant 37 are getting nowhere, and it looks like G’Kar has the upper hand on Londo. In the meantime, a strange discussion between Kosh and Delenn leads to a momentous decision, one which numbers Delenn’s days as she knows them. An informant for Garibaldi is found murdered, and Garibaldi sets out to discover who did it. Morden, an elusive being in human form who once asked Londo and G’Kar what they wanted, appears out of nowhere and offers Londo the opportunity to take credit for a solution to the quadrant 37 problem that will tip the scales in the Centauris’ favor, a solution which Morden and his unspecified associates will provide at no cost. Garibaldi follows a tenuous trail of clues to a man named Devereaux, who warns that the security chief is getting into something too big for him. As it turns out, this is true – Garibaldi discovers evidence that Devereaux may be an Earthforce special agent, and finally stumbles across a plot to assassinate the president of the Earth Alliance. He pays for this discovery dearly when one of the conspirators shoots him, almost fatally. The Shadows are cast upon quadrant 37, utterly annihilating every trace of the Narn presence there in mere seconds. Delenn goes to Sinclair to discuss at last the Battle of the Line and his capture, but his priority must be to find Garibaldi. Delenn is risking her life and Sinclair’s to reveal the mystery to him, and warns that she has little time left. Garibaldi, dying, warns of the plot to kill the president, but his warning is too late, and Earthforce One is destroyed and Vice President Clark is sworn in as president hours later. Londo is horrified at Morden’s solution to the quadrant 37 dispute. Delenn sets into motion a process which begins transforming her, and Sinclair misses his chance to learn the greatest mystery of his life. Garibaldi is given 50/50 odds on surviving his injuries. And all at once, nothing will ever be the same…

The Abandoned

Star Trek: Deep Space NineStardate not given: Quark obtains the salvaged wreckage of a ship from the Gamma Quadrant and discovers an alien infant in some kind of container. The child is handed over to Bashir, who finds that its metabolic rate is incredibly accelerated. Within hours, the child seems to be at least eight years old and can already talk to and understand others. Later, as the boy evolves even more rapidly, it is discovered that he is an infant Jem’Hadar – and a chance encounter with Odo reveals that the boy is genetically programmed to respect changelings. Odo hopes that he can demonstrate to the boy that, just as Odo is not the same as the Founders of the Dominion, the child does not have to follow in the violent footsteps of his fellow warriors.

The Snake

Space PrecinctA bomb strapped to one of Altor’s most prominent businessmen explodes – a signature of the Snake, an alien assassin who the Space Police have never been able to capture. One of them who has tried, Officer Jane Castle, saw the attempt to corner the Snake turn into tragedy. Another survivor of that incident, detective Gray, is called in to help deal with the problem. After the Snake’s next ransom demand is called in, Brogan and Haldane are dispatched to the target – an unmanned refinery vessel – only to find that it’s already been turned into an orbiting bomb that they can’t escape without detonating. Their only choice is to defuse the bomb from inside… but unknown to them, someone at the Space Precinct is working against them.

Babylon 5Within three days of the president’s assassination, Sinclair has been recalled to Earth. Captain John Sheridan of the starship Agamemnon is assigned to take command of B5, which is visited by Kalain, commander of the Minbari warship Trigati which has been missing since its crew defied the Grey Council’s sudden cease-fire order that ended the Earth-Minbari War over a decade before. The Minbari protest the choice of Sheridan to command the station due to his service in the war, and Grey Council envoy Hedronn warns Sheridan of Kalain’s presence and hostile intent. As it turns out, Kalain has made his way to Delenn’s quarters to kill the cocooned ambassador, but is apprehended before he can do any harm. Lennier reveals the reason for Sinclair’s recall and the end of the war: the Grey Council believes that the noblest souls of dead Minbari are now being reincarnated as the newest generations of humans, Sinclair included. The Trigati emerges through the jump gate, ready to attack if Kalain is not released from custody. Sheridan, who has been described by nearly every Minbari so far as a dark omen for the hope of peace, faces the prospect of renewed bloodshed on his hands.

Time To Kill

Space PrecinctA raid on a counterfeiting operation that Brogan and his team have been watching for a long time goes disastrously wrong. The counterfeiters are better armed than expected, and even after they’re disarmed, they have a doomsday weapon – an unstoppable cyborg whose armor isn’t even dented by concentrated firepower. Took is wounded in action, and a wet-behind-the-ears new counterfeiter is critically injured when he’s knocked into an acid vat. Both of them are hospitalized, but the cyborg makes another appearance, killing both survivors. Brogan makes the pursuit of the cyborg his personal crusade, but the pursuit becomes deadly to everyone around him: the cyborg blasts Brogan’s police cruiser, and Haldane’s ejection seat doesn’t work, forcing him to press Brogan’s ejection button; the senior cop is helpless to watch as Haldane dies trying to land the ship without causing any civilian casualties. The cyborg infiltrates the precinct itself, killing most of Brogan’s fellow space police, including Officer Castle. Brogan hustles his family into hiding and waits for the cyborg to come after him, only to find that incide the armored suit is a familiar face with a time-twisting tale.
