Farscape Season 1

Premiere

FarscapeCommander John Crichton is the first test pilot of Farscape One, a craft he designed in order to test a theory on gravitational acceleration. However, when the ship encounters a disturbance midflight, Crichton winds up sucked through a wormhole right into the middle of a prison ship’s escape from its military escort. Moya, the prison ship, brings Crichton on board, but not before one of the attacking Peacekeeper fighters collides with Farscape One and subsequently crashes. His first encounter with the escapees – the exiled priest Zhaan, the deposed ruler Rygel, and the warrior D’Argo – does not go well, and before long he and a captured Peacekeeper stage a prison break of their own . . . with the brother of the dead pilot on their trail and seeking revenge.

Back and Back and Back to the Future

FarscapeThe crew rescues two Illanics, longtime allies of the Luxans. After returning from the scientists’ shuttle, Crichton finds himself even more disoriented than usual. At first his visions merely find him in compromising positions with Matala, the female Illanic. In and of itself this is enough to set off D’Argo’s jealousy. But soon Crichton sees his own death, and must figure out whether he’s lost his grip on reality or gained a chance to avert disaster.

Exodus from Genesis

FarscapeA giant swarm of space insects shields Moya from detection by a scanning Peacekeeper Marauder ship – but it also infests the ship. The bugs gather genetic material from the crew and construct physical doppelgangers of them as they transform Moya into a hive. The process raises the ship’s temperature past the tolerance level for Sebaceans, which poses a threat to Aeryn but may be the crew’s best defense when the Peacekeepers arrive.

Throne for a Loss

FarscapeRygel attempts to impress a group of aliens with his royal status in order to earn the crew some work hauling cargo. Unfortunately the Tavleks are much more interested in earning a ransom from his “kingdom,” so they quickly kidnap the deposed Dominar. The crew does take one of the attackers hostage, and capture his weapon: a gauntlet that pumps its wearer full of stimulants to boost strength and aggression. Zhaan tries to reach out to the prisoner, now suffering from withdrawal. Crichton and Aeryn manage to get the gauntlet from an on-the-warpath D’Argo only to find that Rygel had taken an important control crystal from Moya in order to pull off his ruse – and without the crystal, Moya cannot survive for long.

PK Tech Girl

FarscapeMoya encounters the Zelbinion, a derelict Peacekeeper ship which served as Rygel’s first prison a hundred cycles ago. When Crichton and Aeryn board the ship looking for salvageable wares, they find it gutted, with a lone Peacekeeper tech on board. Gilina’s crew, sent by Crais, fell victim to an attack from local scavengers called the Sheyangs. While Gilina and Crichton attempt to get the Zelbinion‘s defense screen functioning before the Sheyang send another crew to finish the job (and wipe out Moya in the bargain), D’Argo trades on his race’s reputation to stall for time, and Rygel determines to enter the graveyard of his demons.

Notes: Oddly enough, this was the first episode of Farscape ever broadcast, as a “sneak preview” episode on USA Network five days before the series premiere aired on the Sci-Fi Channel; the episode was actually the seventh produced and the fifth aired on the Sci-Fi Channel.

Thank God It’s Friday . . . Again

FarscapeD’Argo storms off Moya in the midst of a Luxan hyper-rage. But when Crichton, Aeryn, Zhaan and Rygel follow him down to the planet Sykar, they find their much-mellowed shipmate celebrating the end of the work week and tomorrow’s rest day. Crichton and Zhaan stay with D’Argo in an effort to persuade him to give up his new life as a field laborer. Aeryn and Rygel return to Moya before the Sykaran sun brings the temperature above Aeryn’s tolerance levels; once there, Rygel encounters a threat of a decidedly internal nature. Morning comes, and a confused Crichton and Zhaan watch D’Argo set off for work, declaring that tomorrow is rest day.

I, E.T.

FarscapeThe crew discovers a homing beacon installed inside Moya, broadcasting their location to the Peacekeepers. To muffle the signal, Moya buries itself in a bog, and Crichton, Aeryn and D’Argo disembark to gather an element needed to anesthetize Moya during the beacon’s removal. Crichton is quickly separated and finds himself in the hands of the natives, who have yet to journey into space or encounter visitors from other worlds. Because of the delay, Rygel begins the surgery to remove the crystal with only Zhaan’s empathic ability to draw away Moya’s pain.

That Old Black Magic

FarscapeWhen a stranger appears to Crichton and claims to be a magician, Crichton is skeptical. When the stranger demonstrates his knowledge of Crichton’s predicament and offers to help him settle things with Crais, however, skepticism turns to interest. The deal is not quite what it seems, however – while the stranger does bring Crais and Crichton together, he does so by separating their spirits from their bodies, trapping the former in his stronghold. Crichton seeks to enlist Crais’ help in overcoming their captor, but Crais’s thoughts are only on revenge – and his corporeal form is a price he’s more than willing to pay. Crichton’s only hope may be in Zhaan reconnecting with a part of herself she hoped she had left behind for good, one that could cost her her very way of life.

DNA Mad Scientist

FarscapeZhaan, D’Argo, Crichton and Rygel enlist the aid of Namtar, a famed genetic researcher whose database of 11,000 species might include star charts back to their home worlds. While Earth proves beyond even Namtar’s reach, he offers maps to the other three for a small price – one of Pilot’s arms. To Crichton’s shock and Pilot’s consternation, they agree, taking the limb by force. When the data crystal with the maps arrive, however, the three discover that Moya’s computers can not handle the avalanche of data, and that the only way to salvage even one of the maps is to destroy the other two. While Zhan, Rygel and D’Argo scheme with and against each other, the prospect of anyone returning home reminds Aeryn of her isolation from the Peacekeepers, and asks Namtar to find her a Sebacean colony somewhere where she might fit in. Instead, the scientist uses Aeryn as a test subject for a new genetic graft, by which he intends to assimilate Pilot’s multitasking abilities into himself. Crichton must find a way to rescue Aeryn before someone wins the battle of wills, and Moya departs the Uncharted Territories forever.

They’ve Got a Secret

FarscapeIn the midst of another search for hidden Peacekeeper devices, D’Argo triggers an explosion that hurls him outside Moya. Aeryn retrieves him in her Prowler and Zhaan revives him, but the injured Luxan suffers from hallucinations, believing his shipmates to be his family. Moya also seems to recover poorly from the accident, as life support and other systems begin to fail, the DRDs begin to attack the crew and Pilot himself loses consciousness. While the crew tries to unravel the mystery of Moya’s behavior, D’Argo’s delusions gradually reveal his own secrets, including the true nature of his crimes.

Till The Blood Runs Clear

FarscapeCrichton and Aeryn take the Farscape One module out for a spin around a planet with massive solar flare activity. Crichton is delighted when his slingshot maneuver creates a proto-wormhole; less so when the resultant damage to the module forces Aeryn and him to land on the planet below and seek out the services of the local mechanic. Unfortunately, Crais has recently been in the area as well, sending a message beacon to advertise the bounties on Zhaan, D’Argo and Rygel, and a hidden offer for Aeryn. A pair of eager-to-collect bounty hunters suspect Crichton and Aeryn of having some link to the fugitives until Crichton bluffs his way into command of the entire hunting party. All goes well until Crais’ offer and an ill-timed solar flare combine to give Aeryn a very difficult time in seeing her own future, while an impatient D’Argo heads for the surface and is quickly captured, raising the stakes on Crichton’s bluff.

Rhapsody in Blue

FarscapeMoya initiates a sudden StarBurst when she hears a distress call from another pregnant Leviathan. Upon arrival, however, the crew learns that the signal was actually sent by a Delvian sect seeking Zhaan’s help. In their efforts to develop the power needed to free their world from the Peacekeepers, they have unleashed their own darker impulses; their leader is already insane, and his daughter and successor Tahleen is soon to follow. Only Zhaan has the knowledge and power to restrain those impulses, and Tahleen implores Zhaan to join her in mental unity in order to share that knowledge. Shaken by the memory of the last time she entered such a unity, and against Crichton’s better judgment, she agrees. But Tahleen has no plans for a peaceful exchange, and her betrayal may trap Zhaan in a state of madness and the rest of Moya’s crew in a prison of illusions and false memories.

Jeremiah Crichton

FarscapeA frustrated Crichton takes the Farscape One module out for a drive to blow off steam – just as Moya’s pregnancy triggers an unexpected StarBurst that leaves him stranded. He makes his way to the planet Acquara, whose natives remain in a primitive state since something on the planet quickly drains all artificial power sources. He strikes up a friendship with the natives, although a few Acquarans fear that he is a threat to their ambitions. At D’Argo and Aeryn’s insistence, the crew of Moya spends months searching for Crichton. But when they find him, the Acquarans mistake Rygel for a long-awaited deity. Rygel realizes that the Acquarans were once Hynerian subjects – but can he make them understand the truth before they are all executed as religious imposters?

Durka Returns

FarscapeWhen Moya damages a Nebari ship in another unintended StarBurst, she and Pilot insist on bringing its crew aboard to help them make repairs. Moya’s crew is less than thrilled to discover that the Nebari ship is a prison vessel, carrying a thief named Chiana back home for “rehabilitation” – a complete reworking of her personality to ensure her good behavior. Even more alarming to Rygel, the Nebari official Salis is accompanied by Captain Durka, the former commander of the Zelbinion. Salis insists that Durka, too, has been rehabilitated, and the former Peacekeeper expresses remorse for his actions. His apologies fall on deaf ears, however, and Rygel’s efforts to take revenge only compound the situation. Chiana escapes, Salis dies, and the crew must decide which criminal to trust.
