War Without End – Part 1

Babylon 5A distress call reaches the station from sector 14, the location of the mysteriously vanished Babylon 4, only this call comes from Babylon 5, with a time-stamp that places it just over a week in the future. Garibaldi leaves on a solo mission to investigate, finding that the rip in time has reopened in sector 14, enlarged by the Great Machine on Epsilon 3. Delenn then suddenly insists that Sheridan, Ivanova and Marcus join her on the White Star to undertake a mission of the utmost importance – and they will be joined by Jeffrey Sinclair, whose arrival on B5 has been prompted by a mysterious letter written almost a milennium ago and delivered to him in accordance to prophecy on Minbar. En route to the temporal rift, Delenn reveals that the White Star crew is responsible for hijacking Babylon 4 from its present to the distant past, where it turned the tide in the last war with the Shadows. Without B4’s arrival in the past, the Shadows will never have lost the first war, and the war of the present will end in destruction for Babylon 5. A curious alien called Zathras arrives from Epsilon 3, sent by Draal to help the crew on their mission. But Sheridan will not arrive in the past with the others, when the device he wears to allow him to travel in time is damaged and deposits him on Centauri Prime in the future.

War Without End – Part 2

Babylon 5In the court of Emperor Londo Mollari, Sheridan is condemned to die. In his cell, he briefly shifts forward in time, but returns to the future where he encounters an aged Delenn, who is also due to be executed. Londo, drunk, reveals that he is under the constant watch of a creature which will alert the surviving minions of the Shadows if he does not act according to their wishes. His watchdog can be subdued by drink, and while free of its influence, Londo allows Delenn and Sheridan to escape. But before they can leave, Sheridan is yanked back through time as Delenn warns him never to go to Z’ha’Dum. He arrives at B4 and helps Sinclair secure the station for its upcoming time journey, but with his time stabilizer still inactive, he disappears again. To make matters worse, Sinclair has aged abruptly, a side effect of his exposure to the tachyon fields surrounding B4 when he visited there before. Attempts to prepare B4 to leap a thousand years into the past run into further problems when Zathras, who is captured and interrogated by both the original Babylon 4 crew, and Sinclair and Garibaldi in 2258. When preparations are finally made, Sheridan is safely retrieved so he can return to his present, but Sinclair must stay aboard Babylon 4 as it vanishes into the past – and both it and its occupant will become the stuff of legends.

Walkabout

Babylon 5Quiet preparations are underway for the arrival of the new Vorlon ambassador, who will assume the late Kosh’s duties and identity with no public acknowledgement of Kosh’s death at the hands of the Shadows. Sheridan can only assume that it’s Vorlon business as usual when Kosh’s replacement insists that he is Kosh. Telepath Lyta Alexander, however, fares less well with the new ambassador when he accusingly questions her regarding her whereabouts during Morden’s fatal attack on Kosh. Sheridan enlists Lyta’s help to test Garibaldi’s information that telepaths can cripple a Shadow vessel, and Delenn and G’Kar pledge to send their own ships in support. G’Kar’s support vanishes, however, when the captain of the Narn vessel fails to see how the Narn race can benefit from Sheridan’s anti-Shadow mission, despite the fact that Sheridan sheltered that ship from the Centauri a year ago. Stephen Franklin, on his personal journey to recover from the stim addiction that convinced him to leave his post as the station’s chief surgeon, befriends a nightclub singer on the station who is suffering from a terminal illness, though she does not reveal this herself. When the White Star finally meets a Shadow vessel for the inevitable frontal assault, Lyta’s telepathic prowess may not be enough to help Sheridan return to the station with what he learns from the encounter.

Grey 17 Is Missing

Babylon 5The disappearance of a maintenance worker on the station goes largely unnoticed as Sheridan initiates an open call for telepaths to assist in the offensive against the Shadows. On Minbar, Delenn becomes the natural successor to lead the Rangers after Sinclair’s one-way trip into the past, but Neroon of the warrior caste opposes Delenn’s ascension. He demands that the warrior caste should lead the Rangers, and vows to stop Delenn from assuming command at any cost. Delenn forbids Lennier to speak of the threat to any of the station’s command staff, so Lennier confides his fears to Marcus. Garibaldi investigates the missing maintenance worker, only to find an entire floor of the grey sector is unaccounted for. He forces his way into grey 17, but is trapped there with a handful of eccentrics led by the constantly pontificating Jeremiah. Also caged in grey 17 is an alien menace which has killed untold numbers of victims – and Jeremiah insists that Garibaldi’s only escape is to die a pure and noble death, an option that the security chief does not plan on examining.

And The Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place

Babylon 5All attempts at discerning a tactical pattern in the Shadows’ attacks come up with a blank, and Sheridan’s not happy about it. Delenn tries to comfort him, but his inability to recognize the Shadows’ strategy frustrates Sheridan to the exclusion of all else. Lord Refa arrives from the Centauri homeworld along with a functionary of the Royal Court, investigating Refa’s complaint that Londo is impeding Centauri progress in the war. Londo sends Vir to tell G’Kar that his former aide, Na’Toth, is still alive and well on Narn. Then Londo confronts the Emperor’s messenger with his story that Refa is actually the obstacle to Centauri ascendency. Meanwhile, Vir is captured and forcibly probed by a telepath working for Refa. Powerless to resist, Vir cannot withhold the news that G’Kar is returning to the Narn homeworld. Sheridan holds a meeting with Brother Theo and two religious leaders from Earth, who have risked a great deal to smuggle out word that a resistance has formed against President Clark’s totalitarian regime. Reverend Dexter expresses in private his concern that Sheridan is shouldering too much of the war’s burden himself, and suggests that Delenn is Sheridan’s obvious partner in tactical matters – and more. Refa arrives on Narn and traps G’Kar, only to discover that the trap has been sprung already – by Londo. Londo has paid off Refa’s guards to leave him defenseless at the hands of the Narn, and has promised G’Kar the release of thousands of enslaved Narns in exchange for a small favor…Refa’s death. Sheridan begins to detect a possible pattern to the Shadows’ attacks, but upon his suggestion that he must think like the enemy in order to outwit them, Delenn becomes alarmed and literally drags him to Reverend Dexter’s worship service. Later, she reveals that things may not be as hopeless as they seem, unveiling an entire fleet of White Stars that could turn the tide in the war.

Shadow Dancing

Babylon 5Delenn is having difficulty convincing the League of Non-Aligned Worlds of the merits of committing large numbers of their forces to a full frontal assault on the Shadows – after all, the Shadows’ track record of leaving no survivors is almost spotless – but wins the support of the League. Sheridan dispatches Marcus and Ivanova on a mission in the White Star to act as the early warning for the fleet, but it is made clear to them from the outset that they only have a 50/50 chance of surviving a meeting with the Shadows. Delenn proposes that, after the battle is over, she and Sheridan engage in a three-day Minbari ritual during which the female watches the male in his sleep to find his true face, and, if she approves, to stay with him. Franklin, still on his walkabout, tries to intervene to prevent a man from being thrashed by two dwellers of Downbelow, only to find himself on the receiving end of a large knife, and even the man he saves won’t help him for fear of being exposed as a drug dealer.

A lone Shadow scout vessel appears, and the White Star sounds the alarm – but their quarry turns on them and, before they can destroy it, causes critical damage to the White Star, which now sits helpless before an approaching Shadow attack fleet. Franklin lies alone and dying on the station when he finally meets himself – with mixed results. Franklin reflects with himself upon his inability to take responsibility for his actions or his life, and still no help is on the way. Sheridan, Delenn and the others launch their fleet to counter the Shadow attack, and the battle is on. Franklin manages to struggle his way into a public place where there is a chance that someone will call for help. After a long a bloody fight, the Shadows are routed by Sheridan’s fleet, but at great cost – for every Shadow ship destroyed, at least two of the ships provided by the League of Non-Aligned Worlds faced a similar fate. Franklin is taken to medlab, where he watches as the wounded from the battle with the Shadows are wheeled in en masse and decides he wants to return to his job.

In hyperspace, a Shadow vessel launches a small craft toward the station. Its occupant arrives almost unnoticed, but Zack Allan alerts Ivanova of the mysterious new arrival. Unfortunately, no one can stop this visitor from going to Sheridan’s quarters. Delenn’s ritual of watching Sheridan sleep is interrupted when a woman enters the room and identifies herself as Anna Sheridan.

Z’Ha’Dum

Babylon 5Sheridan is stunned by his wife’s unexpected arrival, and even Delenn is at a loss to explain her presence. Franklin’s tests confirm that Anna is who she claims to be, even down to the DNA level, though a curious feature is later detected at the base of her skull. Anna insists that Sheridan come to Z’Ha’Dum with her to hear the Shadows’ side of the story, claiming that their intentions are benign. Skeptical, Sheridan agrees to go with her in the White Star. He also makes other arrangements in private with Garibaldi, including the transfer of two thermonuclear devices – smuggled in by G’Kar for use in the war – to the White Star. Londo receives a summons to report to the Royal Court on Centauri Prime – a promotion he’s hoping to avoid – and then receives a warning from an unidentified man to leave the station at once.

Anna reveals that the mission of the Icarus to Z’Ha’Dum – the doomed flight on which her husband assumed she had died – was no coincidence; the dormant Shadow vessel excavated on Mars was Earth’s first clue to the existence of the ancient race, and the shady Interplanetary Expeditions corporation tracked the ship and the Shadow that rescued it back to Z’Ha’Dum. On the planet, Sheridan is confronted by an old man named Justin, and a face he has seen before – Morden. Together, they try to convince Sheridan that the Shadows try to keep younger races in conflict for their own good, to force stronger results via evolution in adverse conditions, whereas the Vorlons attempt to keep the peace and allow evolution to take its course, resulting in weaker races. As a fleet of Shadow vessels appears and surrounds Babylon 5, Morden offers a choice – Sheridan can take the enemy’s side or all that he values will be wiped out. Sheridan, however, refuses to play with the deck dealt to him, and fights his way to the heart of the Shadows’ domain on Z’Ha’Dum. Cornered by the Shadow-influenced Anna and the Shadows themselves, Sheridan summons the White Star to take a death dive right into his location. Urged by the voice of Kosh, Sheridan leaps off a high balcony into a huge pit, as the White Star slams into Z’Ha’Dum with its nuclear payload, destroying the Shadows’ base of operations.

The Shadow ships threatening the station leave when they realize they are urgently needed elsewhere, but they snag a hostage before they go – a Starfury piloted by Garibaldi.

Hour of the Wolf

Babylon 5A week after Sheridan’s fateful voyage to Z’ha’Dum, the League of Non-Aligned Worlds is fragmenting as its member races plan to strengthen their homeworlds’ defenses in fear of Shadow retaliation. Delenn and Ivanova are taking the loss of Sheridan hard in their own ways, but no one seems to remember Garibaldi’s disappearance aside from G’Kar and Zack Allan; G’Kar vows to find Garibaldi. Delenn demands to know why Kosh has not backed her pleas to the League of Non-Aligned Worlds, but Kosh brushes her off, as well as her request for a Vorlon expedition to retreive Sheridan from Z’ha’Dum. Londo, recalled to Centauri Prime to serve as an advisor on planetary security, discovers that the insane young Emperor Cartagia has made a deal with the Shadows, offering their forces shelter on an uninhabited island on the Centauri homeworld. Londo is present as Shadow vessels streak overhead in the Centauri sky, fulfilling a terrifying dream-prophecy that has plagued him for years. The atrophied Morden is also on Centauri Prime, manipulating events. Lyta, Ivanova and Delenn undertake a last-ditch recovery mission to Z’ha’Dum, only to be thwarted and almost destroyed by a remnant of the Shadows, and only Lennier’s quick thinking saves them. Londo calls Vir to Centauri Prime to conspire to remove Cartagia from the throne by any means necessary. Sheridan – whom everyone assumes, from rumors and reports, is dead – finds that he may, in fact, be dead.

Whatever Happened To Mr. Garibaldi?

Babylon 5Sheridan experiences strange visions of being questioned by something unknown. He is still in an unspecified underground location on Z’ha’Dum, with the mysterious alien called Lorien, who proves beyond most reasonable doubts that Sheridan is dead…maybe. G’Kar has left the station to investigate a possible lead into Garibaldi’s whereabouts, and Marcus follows him quietly, since G’Kar’s amnesty ends at the hull of Babylon 5. G’Kar, enquiring about a recovered fragment of Garibaldi’s Starfury, makes too much of a stir at an offworld bar and attracts the attention of Centauri bounty hunters. G’Kar sends Marcus back to the station to follow up on some new information, but is captured by the Centauri and taken to their homeworld, where the Emperor presents G’Kar to Londo as a gift. Londo accepts his new slave graciously, but also sees the potential to use G’Kar as the means to remove Cartagia from the throne. Sheridan eventually digs through Lorien’s riddles to learn that Lorien is not only one of the First Ones, he is the First One himself. With no guarantees that Sheridan can survive, Lorien offers the captain an opportunity to return to the world of the living. And somewhere, Garibaldi finds himself imprisoned, unable to remember what happened to him after being captured by the Shadows…

The Summoning

Babylon 5Ivanova and Marcus set out aboard a ship from the White Star fleet to make contact with more of the First Ones, seeking more allies to participate in a final attack on Z’ha’Dum. The information G’Kar acquired about the possible whereabouts of Garibaldi arrives, and Zack Allen leads a fighter group to recover him. G’Kar himself, in the meantime, is being tortured at the hands of the mad Centauri Emperor, while Londo and Vir are helpless to do anything but watch and plan a coup to sieze power from Cartagia. Delenn asks Lyta to find out what the Vorlons’ plans are, but Lyta fears the new Vorlon ambassador. Zack recovers Garibaldi, unaware that the security chief has been subjected to some kind of unknown process. Londo tries to convince G’Kar to put on a convincing show of pain in order to save his own life, but G’Kar resists the idea, attempting to maintain the last vestiges of Narn pride. Ivanova and Marcus stumble across a Vorlon fleet in hyperspace, consisting of thousands of heavy cruisers and even a few ships, several miles across, capable of destroying entire worlds. On the station, some of the former League of Non-Aligned Worlds members assemble to denounce Delenn’s proposed attack on Z’ha’Dum, and a ship arrives carrying Sheridan and the mysterious Lorien. Sheridan breaks up the gathering and prepares to lead the fight against the Shadows again, but Ivanova’s discovery, and a near-fatal encounter between Lyta and the Vorlon ambassador, reveals a new problem…the Vorlons have taken it upon themselves to end the war by eliminating all of the younger races who have ever been influenced by the Shadows.

Falling Toward Apotheosis

Babylon 5Worlds continue to fall to the might of the Vorlon fleet, but on the station, Garibaldi grows increasingly frustrated. Sheridan’s return has generated an almost messianic fervor, yet Garibaldi’s return has been met with concern and barely-veiled suspicion. On Centauri Prime, Morden comes to Londo and asks for a Centauri fleet to protect the Shadow presence on the Centauri homeworld. Londo disapproves, and Cartagia backs him up – on the incredible premise that Centauri Prime will serve as his inaugural pyre when the Shadows ascend him from the throne to godhood. Sheridan decides that measures must be taken to secure Babylon 5 from Vorlon attack – so their ambassador must leave the station, by force if necessary. The Vorlon repels a relatively courteous call from Garibaldi and his troops, attempting to remove it from its quarters. Londo contacts Sheridan, hoping that the captain has formulated some plan to repel the Vorlon fleet from Centauri Prime, but Sheridan can offer no guarantees. Lyta lures the Vorlon into open ground, where a combination of electrocution and massive firepower destroys its encounter suit and sets it loose inside the station. Sheridan, who has been carrying the original Kosh inside him since its death, frees Kosh to expel the Vorlon ambassador, and after shooting through the station into space, both Vorlons perish in the struggle. Londo convinces Cartagia to visit Narn and conduct G’Kar’s trial and execution there. And after the battle with the Vorlon ambssador has ended, Sheridan reveals to Delenn the terrible cost of his trip to Z’ha’Dum.

The Long Night

Babylon 5As Shadow and Vorlon forces rampage through the galaxy, destroying virtually all that they encounter, Sheridan assembles the largest fleet in the history of the younger races to take them on. Many of the members of the League of Non-Aligned Worlds are skeptical of their chances of success, but Sheridan insists that the offensive must proceed despite the fact that it is barely understood how the Shadows’ and Vorlons’ planet-killers work. In the meantime, Centauri Emperor Cartagia has traveled to the Narn homeworld with Londo in tow to attend G’Kar’s execution. Londo, however, has other plans, namely the assassination of the insane Cartagia. Londo’s pawns include Vir, other Centauri conspirators, and G’Kar himself, and Londo’s strategy depends on everything falling into place at precisely the right moment. Sheridan’s war strategy also depends on a number of favorable conditions, and an extraordinary sacrifice. His plan is to lure the Vorlons and Shadows to the same place with the hope that the two superpowers will annihilate one another.

Londo at last disposes of Morden and the Shadow ships berthed on Centauri Prime, but his own presence may doom his people. Epiphanies

Babylon 5In the wake of the war, President Clark panics because his Shadow allies are no longer there to help him, and sets wheels into motion to bring down those responsible for the Shadows’ departure – Sheridan and the others aboard B5. Bester learns of a plan to tarnish B5’s public image by having a squadron of Psi Corps’ Black Omega fighters attack the blockade at the nearest Earth outpost to the station, claiming to be from Babylon 5, and travels to the station to warn Sheridan. But the price for this information is an ill-advised trip to Z’Ha’Dum so Bester can try to recover Shadow technology that could free his former lover from their influence, a trip which is cut short when an intruder detection system destroys Z’Ha’Dum completely. Other surprises include Garibaldi’s sudden resignation after receiving a mysterious call, Londo and G’Kar returning to the station, the arrival of a new alien race on Centauri Prime, and at least one Elvis sighting.

The Illusion of Truth

Babylon 5Sheridan is more than just a little bit dismayed when an ISN camera crew and reporter Dan Randall come aboard to do a special report on Babylon 5. Since ISN’s last hatchet job on the station took place two years ago before Clark’s lust for power became public knowledge, Sheridan can only assume that any new report – especially since Clark’s military takeover of the media – will be much worse. His strategy is to give short, simple answers which are harder to reinterpret in a different context, but when the report is aired on ISN, even that approach proves inadequate to prevent ISN from grotesquely twisting the story around the suit the goals of President Clark, and perhaps the most disturbing soundbite comes in the form of Garibaldi speaking out against Sheridan’s recent actions.
