Hi Diddle Riddle

BatmanAn exploding cake delivered to the Republic of Moldavia’s pavilion at the Gotham City World’s Fair signals the return of the Riddler, and the Gotham authorities call Batman into action. The Riddler leaves enough clues for the Dynamic Duo to find him at a prestigious art gallery, and when Batman and Robin arrive, they think they see the Riddler holding the gallery’s proprietor up at gunpoint. But it’s all a setup, and the Riddler sues Batman for assault and slander – but he’s not after the million dollars named in the lawsuit. The Riddler wants to force Batman to reveal his true identity to all. And just in case that part of his plan doesn’t work, the Riddler manages to drug Batman and kidnap Robin…

BatmanCast: Adam West (Batman), Burt Ward (Robin), Alan Napier (Alfred), Neil Hamilton (Commissioner Gordon), Stafford Repp (Chief O’Hara), Madge Blake (Mrs. Cooper), Jill St. John (Molly), Frank Gorshin (The Riddler), Allen Jaffe (Harry), Michael Fox (Inspector Basch), Damian O’Flynn (Gideon Peale), Ben Astar (The Moldavian Prime Minister), Jack Barry (Newscaster)

Notes: Though ’60s TV Batman tended not to dwell on the details of what happened to Bruce Wayne’s parents (as established in the comics), this episode makes a rare reference to Bruce’s parents being murdered, and states that this is his motivation to fight crime. Robert Butler had, over a year prior to Batman’s premiere on ABC, directed the rejected pilot episode of a series which would return to challenge Batman’s popularity in the fall of 1966.

Smack In The Middle

BatmanThe Riddler, obsessed with revealing Batman’s secret identity, alters the appearance of Molly, a member of his criminal gang, to resemble Robin, and sets a trap for Batman to “rescue” Robin. But back in the Batcave, Batman has already figured out that this isn’t the real Robin; Molly tries to escape and falls into the Batcave’s reactor to her death. The background noise in a call from the Riddler leads Batman to Robin’s true whereabouts, but the Riddler escapes yet again. Robin thinks he has some clues about the Riddler’s next target, but Batman has other ideas…

Fine Feathered Finks

BatmanA strange, but seemingly harmless, giveaway of umbrellas heralds the release from prison of another of Batman’s most fiendish foes, the Penguin. But rather than robbing the store where this event takes place, the Penguin is a no-show, confounding the Caped Crusaders. Batman discovers that three new umbrella factories have opened in Gotham City since the Penguin’s release, one of those factories owned by a Mr. K.G. Bird. Batman decides to plant a bug in the factory, but he does so in plain clothes as Bruce Wayne…and is promptly captured.

Shop Owner)

Notes: BatmanIf the Penguin’s furnace is burning at 10,000 degrees or hotter, it’s actually burning hotter than the average temperature of the surface of the sun – but the temperature does match up with what the most recent scientific studies estimate for the temperature of the Earth’s core, meaning that the Penguin’s furnace may go a very long way down (!). This is the first of many appearances by Burgess Meredith as the Penguin.

The Penguin’s A Jinx

The Joker Is Wild

BatmanOne of Batman’s deadliest foes, the Joker, literally springs himself out of prison and embarks on a new crime spree in Gotham City, leaving clues to confound the Dynamic Duo. They foil the Joker’s museum heist of precious jewels – just – but when they follow the next clue to unmask the Joker at the Gotham City opera, the master criminal springs his trap: it’s all been to lure Batman and Robin so the Joker can unmask them.

Notes: BatmanGrappling with Batman himself instead of simply ordering his henchmen to do it, the Joker – in his first TV appearance – is clearly one of Batman’s more dangerous enemies. This marks Cesar Romero’s debut in the role of the Joker, and as is generally well known, he refused to shave his carefully-cultivated moustache for the part, instead opting to have it grease-painted over. (It’s still quite visible in many shots.)

In their next fight, the Joker swaps Batman’s belt with his own, leaving the Dynamic Duo helpless to catch him. With a well-publicized appearance to attend, and Gotham City’s media questioning their competence, Batman and Robin are certain that they’re walking into another trap set by the Joker.

Classic Season 03 Doctor Who

The Massacre

Doctor WhoThe Doctor and Steven arrive in Paris, 1572. The Doctor is eager to visit apothecary and scientist Charles Preslin, whose early research into germs fascinates him, but doesn’t want to bring Steven along. Steven is loathe to stay in the TARDIS, and promises not to mingle with the locals, but is alarmed when he thinks he sees a man following the Doctor. Steven tries to follow, but runs afoul of the tavern keep (whom he has forgotten to pay). A man helps Steven out of his predicament and then brings him up to speed on the events into which the time travelers have emerged: the bloody fighting between Catholics and Protestants. Steven becomes very worried indeed when the Doctor vanishes, and is even more alarmed when a servant girl named Anne Chaplet bursts into the home of Admiral de Coligny, where he is staying. Anne claims to have overheard what could be a large-scale plot to rid Paris of all Protestants by any means necessary. Steven sees a man he believes to be the Doctor, but his new friends suddenly regard him coldly – they know this man as the Abbot of Amboise, one of the most fanatical Catholic crusaders in France. Not only does Steven not know whether the Doctor is safe, but he now has no backup. He’s a foreigner in a decidedly hostile situation, trapped between fanatical elements among both the Catholics and the Hugenots, and if he can’t find the Doctor, he’ll be stuck there.
