Though the cable episodes of JCC mainly used (often very recognizable) pieces of various sci-fi soundtracks, sometimes making their familiarity part of the joke, late in the “ad-lib years” there was an attempt to go completely original with the music as well. If you can really call it music – it was really Earl messing around with a bunch of Casio and Yamaha keyboards and “ping-ponging” stuff between two tape decks and a mixer to keep adding more sounds to it. The problem with doing that is that the sound you add tend to just be more static and tape noise.

Here, then, is a listening room for some original JCC music from a cassette titled “Jump Cut City Soundtrack.” The episodes in question involve a visit from the T’aag, a Borg-like being who assimilates Burchuss and – oh, family angst plot twist! – turns out to have once been Buh’s brother, Bubba Buh. A whimsical theme for Burchuss emerges early on, only to be overtaken by the T’aag theme, or, as most listeners will recognize it today, the sound of a cat (or an inept keyboardist) dancing on the bass keys of a synthesizer.

Track titles here are exactly as they appeared on the cassette. So are the craptastic popping, clicking, warbling and other artifacts of a crappy cassette recording.

This piece uses generous samples of a very early JCC episode from the pre-cable, strictly-home-movie, all-ad-lib days. If ever you wanted a taste of “classic” JCC… this is a pretty good sampling.

Yes, we “borrowed” Orac from Blake’s 7. Yes, we know Orac doesn’t dance. Deal. This was actually the backing track for a never-completed Satan Brothers song.

This is the first piece of music from the next trilogy of pre-cable episodes, dealing with Burchuss hijacking the ship because his next litter of baby fiddygibbers is about to be born.
