Why don’t you just Kickstart it?

FEED ME!Two things have been occupying my brain of late: VWORP!1 didn’t do bad for itself in an ebook bundle a while back, and I had a job interview a couple of months ago that went considerably better than any such interview I’ve had over the past several years, and yet I didn’t get the job. In the course of discussing these two things with friends, the inevitable question came up: Why are you even looking for a job? Why don’t you just do a Kickstarter/Indiegogo/[insert crowdfunding platform here] so you can stay home and write books?

Here’s my answer to that question, specifically, why I don’t plan on doing it. … Read more

Glitchcon 2013

Glitchcon has come and gone again, and for the second year running, I gotta say, man, is this ever a neat little show. Except that there’s nothing little about it. This year’s show moved to the Springdale Holiday Inn, which is a really nifty space – the artists’ area (where I had a table for theLogBook.com) was in the atrium, and there were several panel rooms, gaming rooms and a video room. It was a really classy space to be occupying. I’m totally cool if they want to stay with this venue for a while.

The first order of business, of course, was to haul in my somewhat modest setup and… well… set it up. … Read more

The flyer that never flew

After pricing color printing locally, I prepared this one-sheet wonder handout for this year’s convention season to advertise current and upcoming products and projects at theLogBook.com. I was very pleased with it. The place I got my prices from hemmed and hawed and stared at me sternly and said “It’d use too much ink, we’d have to charge you extra.” Since this was a completely new unannounced wrinkle to their pricing structure, they didn’t get my business… but I also didn’t get my toner-murdering one-sheets. So here you go – one apparently unprintable sheet describing what the site and its stuff are about.

Admit it, you’ve always wanted to see a light cycle blasting out of the TARDIS, the Enterprise coming out of a Babylon 5 jumpgate, and Serenity flying in formation with a Space: 1999 Eagle too.

I’ve already worked up a different, entirely B&W design, to be printed up in time for this year’s conventions… and to be printed by a business that doesn’t make unannounced “alterations” to its rate card. But it’s just not as in-your-face colorful as this one was – it’s a bit tame by comparison.… Read more

Konsplosion konfirmed!

KonsplosionI’m confirmed as a panelist at Konsplosion, this September in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The scheduling here is a bit tricky: I’ve been committed to this year’s OVGE since… well… last year’s OVGE. This year’s OVGE is the tenth anniversary show, the tables are already reserved, and I can’t really not go.

So the trick here is this: Konsplosion runs September 20th through 22nd. I will do three panels – probably back to back! – on the 22nd: Doctor Who 50th Anniversary, Brit Sci-Fi that isn’t Doctor Who, and the Early History of Video Games. I will have my books and DVDs there to sell/sign between panels. (The books and DVDs will also be available at OVGE the day before.)

I will not have a table at Konsplosion, but my good friends at the Facebook group River Valley Time Lords will have one. Basically, if you’re anywhere in the western half of Arkansas and you like time traveling police boxes, you probably need to be joining that group rightaboutnowish. Big Things are being planned in this area. This area needs cool geeky stuff, and I’m proud to have even a small hand in helping to make some of that stuff happen.

Anyway, that’s the update. Stay tuned!… Read more

Thanks to all the VWORPers and Storybundlers out there!

McCoy's bookin' itThanks to all who have bought the unofficial Doctor Who Storybundle thus far – the feedback’s been great so far.

If you like my occasional Whovian musings, also check out my fellow authors’ sites (and their other books):

See what I said about good company? And quite a few mentions on the web:

Thanks to everyone who has partaken so far – spread the word, there are only 12 days and change left! Do it in the name of peace and sanity and affordable ebooks!

Also: please remember to write reviews on sites such as Amazon and Goodreads, not only of my books but the others you read in the Who Storybundle. As I said in an earlier post, for those of us trying to hit escape velocity, break out of the orbit of our old lives and become full-time writers, you’re writing our new resumes when you review our books. If nobody reviews a book, it kinda looks like no one’s read it either.

Holding out for a physical copy? Hit me up at Glitchcon in two weeks, I’m always happy to sign ’em.… Read more

Convention(al) wisdom

Dear diaryI did five shows in 2012, and had fun at each one to some degree. I’ve also learned a lot of stuff. Did you know that, prior to 2012, I’d never been to a sci-fi or comics convention… ever? Seems kind of odd when one’s as big a fan of nearly everything as I am, until you factor in my aversion to crowds, nervousness at awkward social situations (to me, just introducing myself to people I don’t know is awkward)… basically, typical introvert. And instead of being able to zip around and See All The Stuff, never staying in one place for long, I’m rooted to one spot, because this is work. … Read more
