Dad’s day off

Tuesdays are my wife’s day off, so about half the time they wind up being my day off from Evan. I feel like a bit of a heel for looking forward to Tuesdays. My wife has the baby most of any given Sunday, but that’s because I’m off at the farm working my butt off – not much of a day off for daddy. I love my kid, but it’s kinda nice having a day to myself once a week. His mom has hauled him into town for a pediatrician’s visit (normal) and his first round of shots (which I don’t think he’s gonna like). Then she’s got some other stops to make – and quite frankly, I think those have everything to do with showing the little guy off. 😆

In today’s “this day X years ago” posts, this topic cropped up, and I thought I’d go and take a look at what my music directory is like now, two years later. Survey says…about 120 gigabytes! Of nothing but music/audio! That’s almost exactly 1/3 of my main PC’s hard drive. Good Lord. This is part of why, the last time I was at Kent’s place and saw his Western Digital external drive, I’ll admit I popped a bit of a woody. That thing is nice, and it’s a RAID drive to boot (pitiful pun intended). Needless to say, that’s gone right onto the old wish list (right up there with the Wii I’m never gonna get at this rate :-P). Here’s hoping Santa think I’ve been a really good daddy this year. 😯

That’s all I’ve got in my brain right now. (Ain’t much, I know.)

    Good Lord! I can’t understand what someone would do with 1TB of disk space. I have an 160GB* external HD that I keep connected to my laptop, and I still have over 92GB of space available. Of course, I just keep my music, games and saved downloads on there…I just have a hard time thinking about what else could fill it up.

    * = 150GB when formatted. That’s a waste of a good 10GB right there.

    BTW, random access is why I love having all my collection stored in one place (either on the HD or on my iPod). You never know what’ll come up, and sometimes it’s a song you haven’t heard in a while that makes for a nice surprise. Of course, I don’t neglect my physical media, either — these tinny laptop speakers don’t do some music justice, and my stereo and/or turntable are always ready to go.

    Plus, another good advantage: iPod + cassette adapter + car = entire collection on the go = heaven

    Hmm, maybe that’s next on my “to buy” list…external speakers for the laptop…

    That’s only because I haven’t tallied up and posted the total size of my video directory. 😛

    Consider getting a 500 GB drive instead. It’ll cost a LOT less. I bought a 500 Gb external drive for one third the cost of that 1 TB drive. In fact I heard that Target will be selling a 500 MB drive on Black Friday for only $89.95. That’s a price I’m willing to risk the crowds for!

    According to http://www.blackfriday.info, there’s other options available:

    1. Newegg.com has a Fantom Titanium-II 500GB 7200RPM USB 2.0 External Hard Drive for $90;
    2. Office Depot has a LaCie 500GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive for $100, and CompUSA will have it for $80;
    3. Staples will have a Maxtor 500GB OneTouch 4 External Hard Drive for $80, and CompUSA will have it for $128 (why?);
    4. Circuit City will have a Seagate 500GB FreeAgent Desktop External Hard Drive for $80;

    …and so on and so forth. I don’t know if any of these locations are available to you or not, but I just thought that I would throw those out for you. But, hey, visiting me can only be a good thing, right?

    (…don’t answer that.)

    To put your mind at ease, I’ve copied that list down and handed it over to the folks who actually have the money to do some shopping. I know we have an Office Despot here. The Target and Staples stores have been Coming Soon for months (or years, in Target’s case).

    There’s one in Fayetteville, that’s not too far is it? Not too far from the capital of Wal*Mart either. Did they put that one there to stick it to the (Wal*Mart) man?

    I went to a Target today. The disk drive was sold out. 🙁 Not surprising since I didn’t arrive until after 6:00 PM. I was not about to camp outside the store at 4:00 AM for a hard drive. Besides, I bought me a 500 GB drive several months ago and getting a second oe was not a priority.

    Good luck finding a cheap HD. Even if you didn’t find anything on Black Friday, I’m sure there will be some kind of deals out there for the next month. Even $129 for a 500 GB HD is not a bad deal, IMHO. Not as good as $89 but still it’s only 26 cents a GB! OMG!
