Winter & Lightning

Once again, woken up prematurely – while I’m already down with the flu, no less – by a storm. This time, though, it’s in the middle of February, and at around 1:30 in the morning.

After letting Xena into the house, I stood out on my back deck and took some photos of what was a very active electrical storm moving past just to the north. While I was outside, the thunderstorm warning was issued for Crawford County.

The lights near the bottom of each photo are halogen security lights in the distance, usually near neighbors’ barns or homes (though they’re still fairly small since there’s at least half a mile between us and our nearest neighbor). Depending on the angle, three, four or five lights might be visible. And on a night like this, apparently vividly purple lightning is visible too.

You can make out the silhouette of a tree in my back yard against the lightning in this photo. (Probably not a good idea for me to be standing so close to that tree, which is just a few feet away from the southeast corner of the deck.)

The strangest thing about the moment at which I took these pictures was that the moon and stars were still visible to the north of the house, and there was a damned great electrical storm raging just to the south.
We like the moon
Not long after I took these last photos, the clouds covered the whole sky, the wind picked up, and I realized that I should probably follow my dog’s lead and get inside.
