Lexx 4.0 - Gigashadow

Lexx 4.0 - GigashadowMoving at what seems like a breakneck pace after the plodding Eating Pattern, Gigashadow resolves the story of the crew’s escape from His Divine Shadow (the wraithlike adversary in the first movie) and explains the origins of that enemy as well, and while all these doors are being closed, new ones are being opened as a lot of pipe is laid for the first season of hour-long episodes. And that’s a pretty ballsy move on the part of Paul Donovan and friends, who didn’t even know for certan that the second season would happen.

Lexx 4.0 - GigashadowThe breakneck pace reference is no exaggeration, either: I actually have some major gripes with how the story was structured, particularly with regard to Stanley Tweedle’s plight, his escape from which is miraculously skipped over and then played back in flashback at the end of the movie. When Stan comes out of nowhere to save the day, it’s a cheap shot since we last saw him in a very bad position (pun very much intended). With that one rather major structural quibble and my other big peeve (the underuse of guest star Malcolm McDowell and his rather intriguing character) aside, Gigashadow is a satisfying enough resolution to the first “season” of Lexx.

Lexx 4.0 - GigashadowExtras included on this edition - again, the region 1 release from Canada - are fairly scant; a behind-the-scenes montage covering all four of the movies (with a moderately greater emphasis on this movie in particular) is billed on the menu as an unspecified “promo”…and that’s about it.
