In one of the ballsiest moves this side of rechristening their network with the insipid “SyFy” moniker, Sci-Fi Channel and parent studio Universal decided to release the feature-length pilot of Battlestar Galactica spinoff Caprica almost a full year before its broadcast premiere.  The show had already gotten a series order by the time, so it’s not as if the response to the DVD release could make or break Caprica’s future.  But you can argue that it gives an opportunity for feedback: on the one hand, it could help the studio and producers fine-tune things for the actual first-series episodes, but on the other hand, it’s also out there for nearly a year to be picked apart.
